  • Sessions name themselves. Starting a session from your phone gave you
nowhere to type a title, so it landed in the journal as "Untitled" and usually
stayed that way. Now an untitled session takes the name of the first substance
you log into it — so a session you started one-handed in the dark shows up as
"ketamine" rather than "Untitled". Only the first dose names it, a title you
typed yourself is never overwritten, and you can still rename anything at any
time by tapping its title on the phone or editing it on the desktop.
  • A title field when you start a session on the phone. Optional — leave it
blank and the naming above takes over.

Already have Field Notes installed? You don't need any of these — the app offers
the update itself on next launch.

First launch

The installers aren't code-signed, so each OS will warn you once:

  • macOS — "Field Notes can't be opened because it is from an unidentified
developer." Right-click (or Control-click) the app in Applications and choose
Open, then confirm. Only needed the first time.
  • Windows — SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC." Click
    More info → Run anyway.

The other files

latest.json, Field.Notes_universal.app.tar.gz, and every .sig file belong to
the in-app updater. You don't need to download them.
