Field Notes v0.8.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Jul 00:21

Session timestamps now show how long it's been since your first dose, and the substance reference can be read properly instead of only searched.

What's new

t+ on every session timestamp

  • Doses and timeline notes now show the time since your first dose next to the clock time: 14:02 (t+1:23). On the desktop entry view, the live session, and the phone.
  • The live session header also carries a running now t+2:41, so you can see where you are at a glance without doing arithmetic.
  • The count starts from the first dose, not when you opened the session — you often start an entry well before taking anything, and the things you actually want to time (a peak, a redose window, a comedown) are counted from ingestion. Before anything is logged there's simply no t+ shown, rather than a number counted from nothing.
  • A note you backdated to before your first dose reads t−0:20 rather than t+0:00 — "twenty minutes before dosing" is worth seeing.

Read a substance's full reference entry

  • The reference search used to hand back short excerpts with no way to read the rest. Now every result has "Read the full … entry →", which opens everything the reference holds on that substance — pharmacology, harm potential, tolerance, legality, and so on.
  • If you don't have a question yet, there's a new "Or look up a substance" list underneath: type a name and open any of the 575 substances directly.
  • An opened entry shows its dose ranges, durations, and interaction warnings in their own panel above the prose. That panel is the exact, checked data; the prose below it is background reading. They're kept visually separate on purpose — the written text is never where a dose figure or a combination verdict comes from.

After updating: re-pair your phone

Your phone will say "not paired" after the update. That's the normal pairing reset that happens whenever the desktop app restarts — nothing is wrong. Re-scan the QR code from Settings on the desktop.

Downloads

The asset list below is long because every installer ships with updater signatures — here's what humans need:

Platform Download
Windows 10/11 (x64) Field.Notes_0.8.0_x64-setup.exe — or the .msi
macOS (Apple Silicon + Intel) Field.Notes_0.8.0_universal.dmg
Linux (portable) Field.Notes_0.8.0_amd64.AppImage
Debian / Ubuntu Field.Notes_0.8.0_amd64.deb
Fedora / RHEL Field.Notes-0.8.0-1.x86_64.rpm

Everything else down there (.sig files, .app.tar.gz, latest.json) belongs to the in-app auto-updater — you never need to download those yourself.

First-launch notes

Windows: the installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn — click More info → Run anyway.

macOS: not yet notarized — on first launch, right-click the app and choose Open to get past Gatekeeper. If it's still blocked: try to open it once, then System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the Security section, and click Open Anyway.

Linux: make the AppImage executable and run it, or install the .deb/.rpm for your distro.

Updating from an older version: the app offers this update on launch ("Install & restart"). Your journal is untouched by updates.

As always: this app is a journal and a reference, not medical advice and not encouragement to use anything. Dose and interaction data is a backstop that is incomplete and can be wrong — cross-check trusted sources.
