Font Editor 0.1.3
A magnified preview window, whole-font editing, a Recent Files list, and codepoints that are no longer stuck at 255.
What's new
- Magnified Preview window (View ▸ Magnified Preview…) — pop the font out into its own resizable window at 1×/2×/4× zoom, with square or half-width pixels and an optional wrap toggle. It keeps its own editable preview text, seeded from the main window's the moment it opens, and closes automatically with the main window.
- Whole-font editing — Edit ▸ Whole Font applies clear/invert/flip/shift to every glyph at once as a single undo step. Shift-drag the advance-width marker to set one width across every glyph; Ctrl+Shift-drag applies a relative adjustment instead, previewed live in the character map before you let go.
- Character map improvements — codepoints now show hex and decimal together, in full-brightness text; double-clicking a codepoint opens the remapping dialog directly.
- Swap With Reference Glyph (
Ctrl+Shift+X) — exchange the selected glyph's bitmap and advance width with its pinned reference in one move. - Codepoint tools — Add Codepoint Before/After (
Ctrl+[/Ctrl+]) for a quick, dialog-free neighbor of the current selection; Renumber Codepoints to close gaps into a contiguous run, moving artwork and mappings together; Trim to Codepoint Range to discard everything outside a range. Codepoints are also no longer capped at 255 — any valid Unicode codepoint up to 0x10FFFF is allowed, for fonts that need to reach past the extended-ASCII range. - Recently opened files — a File ▸ Recent Files submenu, with stale entries (files that have since moved or been deleted) cleaned up lazily rather than left to error out.
- Mapping dialog now accepts either the character itself or its Unicode codepoint (decimal or hex, e.g.
0x20AC), switching between them with linked radio buttons. - New ASCII-only Helpers — populate just codepoints 32-127, in stock ASCII or the SAM Coupe variant, alongside the existing full 256-codepoint CP437 helpers.
- Clicking the preview strip now toggles its black/white background too, in addition to the existing View menu item.
- The default preview text now runs through the rest of the printable ASCII set after the numbers, so a fresh font exercises the whole set at a glance.

Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), and Linux builds are all attached below. The Windows and macOS builds are unsigned, so you'll see a SmartScreen/Gatekeeper warning on first run — that's expected.

Font Editor 0.1.2
Raw font import, font metadata, an in-app docs viewer, and a much bigger sample library — plus two Windows layout bugs fixed along the way.
What's new
- Import Raw Font Bitmap — load glyphs straight from a raw binary dump (a ROM extract, another tool's output). Start codepoint, geometry, and byte layout (row-major or column-major) are all configurable, and a short final character is padded with zeroes rather than rejected.
- Font metadata — File ▸ New Font and Font ▸ Font Properties now capture a name, author, email, and description, all optional. Created/modified dates are stamped by the save path itself; fixed- vs. variable-width is computed from the glyphs on demand, so it can never drift from what the font actually is.
- Character map overflow rendering — thumbnails for variable-width glyphs now show the whole cell, tinting the region past the advance marker dark red instead of hiding it.
- Column guide visibility moved from a global preference to per-font state, saved with the font and defaulting to hidden.
- In-app documentation — Help ▸ User Guide and Help ▸ File Formats Reference open the docs in their own window, pre-rendered to static HTML at build time.
- A much bigger sample library — retro system font ROM dumps (Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, BBC, MSX, Master System, Sinclair QL, ZX Spectrum, Apple II, C64) for exercising raw import, plus a new ZX Spectrum sample font. Bundled into every packaged build; Help ▸ Open Sample Fonts Folder points straight at it.
- Two Windows layout bugs fixed: the character map and the glyph-info readout could get pushed off-screen at certain window/sidebar widths.
Fill From System Font is implemented but stays disabled for now — Canvas 2D has no access to real TrueType hinting, so results at small sizes aren't good enough yet.

Font Editor 0.1.0
First packaged build of the bitmap font editor — a desktop editor for monochrome
bitmap fonts, variable or fixed width, aimed at retro and embedded targets.
Download
Font Editor Setup 0.1.0.exe — Windows x64 installer, 78 MB.

The installer is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen will warn on first
run — More info ▸ Run anyway to proceed, or verify the hash above first. It
installs per-user, so it does not need administrator rights.
Windows only for now. electron-builder only builds for the platform it runs on,
and the macOS and Linux targets (DMG and AppImage) are configured but have not
been built or tested.
What it does
- Draw glyphs on a cell up to 32×32 pixels, with a draggable per-glyph advance
width marker and Font ▸ Fit Width to Ink to snap it to the artwork. - Five font-wide guidelines — cap height, x-height, baseline, and left/right
column guides for drawing something like a 6x8 font on an 8x8 grid. - Character map over codepoints 0–255, defaulting to CP437 with the SAM Coupé
substitutions, with shift-click to pin a reference glyph behind the one you
are editing. - Undo/redo, glyph copy/paste, clear, invert, flip and shift, and a live preview
of editable sample text.
Projects save as .fnt.json and round-trip losslessly. File ▸ Export Font…
writes a 1bpp .bin alongside .widths.json and .map.json sidecars; the exact
layout is in docs/file-formats.md,
and docs/user-guide.md
walks through the editor end to end.
