Decomission 1.8.7

At some point we should remove support for 1.8.7. @andrew suggests we do that when Rails 4 comes out, and I concur. Would it be a good idea to switch the test suite over to minitest at that point, seeing as it's faster and we can use the spec syntax to replicate what we are doing now?

I am having problems with Split on 1.8.7 currently (and it works fine for me on 1.9.2 and 1.9.3).

Split.redis
NoMethodError: undefined method `redis' for Split:Module
    from (irb):1

Has 1.8.7 already been deprecated? Or any ideas? Thanks.

It is caused by Rails::Engine, which is not supported in Rails 2.3.

I've fixed mine on my fork.

Checking the rails version here:

require 'split/engine' if defined?(Rails) 

And then anyone on rails 2.3 can include this in an initializer:

      ActionController::Base.send :include, Split::Helper
      ActionController::Base.helper Split::Helper

@andrew is this something that we should put in the documentation? or is rails 2.3 not officially supported?

If we can easily make 2.3 supported that would be great, or we should add a note about it as @phoet mentioned

1.8.7 has been retired now: http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/news/2013/06/30/we-retire-1-8-7/

We should look at removing the 1.8.7 hacks soon, maybe with a deprecation warning in the next release.
