Spring 1942 Mod 0.2.2 — Alpha Preview 3

Choose a tag to compare

@maaxton maaxton released this 21 Oct 17:59

Alpha Preview 3. This is the third public preview of Spring 1942 Mod. It plays, but expect rough edges: we're
releasing it to find the problems we haven't. Please report anything that goes wrong.

Spring 1942 Mod lets you play your own copy of Axis & Allies (1998) on today's Mac, Windows and Linux. The installer
reads your original disc, applies Hasbro's free 1999 update (2.2.3), and translates the game into a native app on
your own computer. No game files are included in this release or in this repository.

If you have 0.2.0 or 0.2.1, download this installer once and run it: those versions can't see updates (GitHub moved its downloads). The installer updates your Mod and keeps your saved games. From 0.2.2 on, updates arrive in the Mod.

Why "Spring 1942"?

Every game of Axis & Allies (1998) opens in the spring of 1942, the turning point of the war.

The name is also a homage. Spring1942.com
was a fan site and league for the game in its online heyday, around the turn of the millennium. The Internet Archive
still has it, including its rank ladder. Players met on the MSN Gaming Zone there, played ranked games on its ladders, and earned ranks
from Private to General. The domain recently became available again, so we bought it. That's where we'll host this
project's multiplayer later on.

Downloads

Which file do I download? The Installer for your computer. The in-app update files are used by the Mod's built-in updater; you don't need them.

Your computer Download
Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) Spring-1942-Mod-Installer-0.2.2-macos-arm64.zip
Mac with an Intel processor Spring-1942-Mod-Installer-0.2.2-macos-x86_64.zip
Windows 10 (1903 or later) or 11, 64-bit Spring-1942-Mod-Installer-0.2.2-windows-x86_64.exe
Linux, 64-bit, glibc 2.35 or newer (Ubuntu 22.04, Debian 12, Fedora 36 or newer) Spring-1942-Mod-Installer-0.2.2-linux-x86_64.AppImage

SHA256SUMS lists the checksum of every download.

You need two things:

  1. The original 1998 Axis & Allies CD-ROM, or an ISO or ZIP of it.
  2. Hasbro's free 1999 update, the file Axis-Allies_Patch_Win_EN_Patch-133.exe (version 2.2.3). It's freely
available online; search for "Axis Allies Patch-133". The installer asks for it next to your disc, and picks
it up from your Downloads folder if it's there. The installer checks that it's the genuine file. The update itself is
never run: the installer applies it.

Neither file is included here.

We don't condone piracy. Spring 1942 Mod needs your own original Axis & Allies disc. Copies of the game,
along with the 1999 update, can be found on the internet. The update was always free, but downloading a copy of the
game that you don't own is piracy, and we don't support it. If your disc is scratched,
make an ISO image of it while it still reads. Most CD tools can do this, and the installer accepts an ISO or ZIP. A
disc that won't read can often be saved with a disc-repair kit.

First launch on a Mac: the app isn't notarized by Apple, so macOS says it can't verify it. Click Done, open
System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, and click Open Anyway. You only do this once.

Linux: make the AppImage executable (chmod +x), then run it.

What works

  • The installer, from disc or ISO/ZIP, with the 1999 update applied automatically.
  • The full single-computer game: against the computer, or with friends at the same keyboard.
  • Saved games, sound, music, and the game's own screens and rules.
  • A fixed-size window on Mac, and full screen on Windows and Linux.

Known limits in this alpha

  • Computer turns: the computer's toughest combat turns can take about a second to plan. The window stays
    responsive while it does.
  • Online play isn't in this release. It will show up in the Mod when it's ready.
  • Updates: the Mod checks this page for new previews and tells you when one is ready. Update from the
banner on its home screen, or from Settings → Updates. If an update changes how the game is rebuilt, the Mod
rebuilds it from the copy of your disc and update it kept.
  • Territory names on the map: like the original, they're off at first. Turn on Preferences → Text on Map.
  • Windows: the least tested of the three. Reports are especially welcome.

Reporting problems

Open an issue at https://github.com/spring1942/spring1942/issues using the Bug report form. Include your
computer, its operating system version, and what happened. The Mod's log file helps a lot; the form says where to
find it.

Spring 1942 Mod is an unofficial, fan-made mod for Axis & Allies (1998), published by Hasbro Interactive. Not
affiliated with or endorsed by Hasbro or Atari. Requires your own original disc.

What's new in this version

  • Fixed: the Mod never offered updates, because GitHub moved its downloads to a new address. If you have 0.2.0 or 0.2.1, download this installer once; later updates arrive in the Mod.
  • Fixed: running a newer installer opened the Mod you already had. It now updates it, and keeps your saved games.
  • Fixed: on a Mac, quitting the Mod after checking for updates showed a crash report.
  • Check for updates now shows that it's checking, then a clear result: up to date, a new version, or what went wrong.
  • The Mod's version shows correctly in Finder and in Windows' installed apps.

What's new in this version

  • First public alpha preview of Spring 1942 Mod.
  • Installs Axis & Allies (1998) from your own disc: the CD, a copy of its files, or an ISO or ZIP image.
  • Applies Hasbro's free 1999 update (version 2.2.3) itself; the update is never run.
  • Translates the game into a native app on your computer. No game files are downloaded.
  • The full single-computer game: play against the computer, or with friends at the same keyboard.
  • Faster computer turns; the window stays responsive while the computer plans.
  • Runs on Mac (Apple silicon and Intel, macOS 12 or newer) and Windows 10 and 11. Linux downloads are coming in the next preview.
  • In-app updates from GitHub, with a notification when a new version is out. Updates are signed and checked.
  • Keeps your disc image and the 1999 update on your computer, so a later update can rebuild the game without asking for the disc again.
  • Known limits: no online play yet; Windows is the least tested platform; Linux comes in the next preview; the first launch on a Mac needs Open Anyway in System Settings.
