Changelog

New Features

  • DSi support: a new DSi system and Roms/NDSI folder, and games launched from it boot through the DSi firmware. The SPRUCE theme has DSi icons. - Ry, SundownerSport
  • DSperate updated to v2.1.0. - Noxwell, Ry
  • New DSperate-Tate emulator option for playing sideways (tate), on every device. - Ry
  • The NDS folder now shows .cia files. - Ry
  • J2ME now runs on the 32-bit devices (A30 and Miyoo Mini). - SundownerSport
  • Stick calibration in spruce's settings for the Smart Pro, Smart Pro S and Brick Pro. - SundownerSport
  • Anbernic XX: the Firmware Update app can now update BaseOS for you. It appears when your BaseOS is older than spruce recommends, downloads the right file for your model, checks it and reboots into the update. - SundownerSport, Ry
  • Anbernic XX: the brightness hotkeys (Start + L/R and Menu + Vol) now work, and the lowest brightness no longer turns the screen off. - SundownerSport
  • Anbernic XX: the game switcher shows the latest screenshot of each game. - SundownerSport
  • Anbernic XX: RetroArch ships a controller profile for the built-in pad, so the "not configured" message on every launch is gone. - SundownerSport
  • About This Device: the FW Version line shows your BaseOS version on the Anbernic XX, and SD card usage shows used / total. - Chris, Ry, SundownerSport
  • About This Device now shows the DSperate version, and emulator version lines only appear on devices that have that emulator. - SundownerSport
  • The home button now closes the main menu popup the same way it opens it. - zenkalia
  • Themes that are missing the selected-key background now get one generated automatically. - Ry

Improvements

  • WiFi has been reworked: the radio is now controlled in one place, so the menu and the background scripts no longer undo each other's changes. WiFi now defaults to off on a fresh install. - SundownerSport, Arkun
  • Anbernic XX: a USB WiFi dongle plugged in after boot is now picked up without toggling WiFi. - SundownerSport
  • RGB30: rejoining a network you've used before now saves correctly. - SundownerSport
  • Faster, cleaner shutdown. The SD card is now unmounted cleanly on the Flip and A30, and shutdown is much quicker on the TrimUI devices (around 16s down to 7s on the Smart Pro S). - SundownerSport
  • Smart Pro, Smart Pro S and Brick Pro: fast stick flicks are no longer dropped. - SundownerSport
  • RetroArch configs now live in Saves/ra-configs/, one per device, and are rebuilt from the defaults when missing. Bug reports now include them. - Ry
  • DSperate: Timing OC is now on by default on all devices, with a CPU underclock on the A30 and an overclock elsewhere. - Ry
  • Incremental OTA updates now work for every device, not just developer mode. - SundownerSport
  • Repair SD Card now works on every device. - SundownerSport
  • RetroArch's XMB menu icons are now unpacked during first boot, so they're ready from the start. - SundownerSport

Bug Fixes

  • Idle shutdown: on the Smart Pro S it could shut the device down while you were playing, and in games with rumble (Smart Pro S, Anbernic XX) it never fired at all. Both fixed. If your analog stick drifts, calibrate it so idle shutdown can tell it's idle. - SundownerSport
  • N64: the home button menu, Exit game and the Game Switcher didn't work with the mupen64plus RetroArch cores. The emulator list now also follows the RetroArch build you pick. - SundownerSport
  • Anbernic XX: idle shutdown is now active from boot, and sleep while plugged in now powers off at the time the "Shutdown after sleep" setting says. - SundownerSport
  • Sleep no longer leaks a background process each time the device sleeps. - SundownerSport
  • The low battery warning in the menu no longer stops the device from shutting down safely at 1%. - SundownerSport
  • Games with RetroAchievements turned on now wait for WiFi before launching. - SundownerSport
  • Syncthing: the sync check no longer gives up after 120 seconds, and no longer breaks the local network connection afterwards. - SundownerSport
  • A30 and Miyoo Mini: turning off WiFi file transfer now actually stops the SFTP server. - SundownerSport
  • The network services landing page now shows only the services you have turned on, with the correct file transfer port, and starts as soon as you turn a service on. - SundownerSport
  • SSH now reliably takes over port 22 from the stock SSH server. - SundownerSport
  • Resetting RetroArch hotkeys no longer leaves a config that only contains hotkeys. - SundownerSport
  • Shutting down from an app no longer shows "Saving and shutting down", tries to close emulators that aren't running, or makes the next boot try to resume a game and ignore your "Boot to" setting. - SundownerSport
  • A full OTA update now removes the old ATOMISWAVE, COCO, JAGUAR and MKXP-Z emulator folders before installing. - SundownerSport
  • DSperate on the Flip works again. - SundownerSport
  • DSperate: RetroAchievements login is kept in "Manual" mode. - Ry
  • RGB30: RetroArch hotkeys now match the other devices, and File Management uses the right X/Y buttons. - Ry, SundownerSport
  • COCO: fixed which devices show it and added alternate folder names. - Ry
  • The main menu popup and the game system sort setting behave correctly again. - SundownerSport
  • Flip: the extended brightness setting is read correctly. - Pablo Sobrado
  • Time sync works on devices with older BusyBox. - Brendan Noble
  • Miniloong: fixed an error in the startup step used when resuming your last game. - SundownerSport
  • Miniloong: the boot hook installer is now on the card. - Arkun
  • Corrected the DSi release year. - Arkhaeon

Linux x64 spruceos-installer-linux-x64.tar.gz
Linux ARM64 spruceos-installer-linux-arm64.tar.gz
Linux ARMv7 spruceos-installer-linux-armv7.tar.gz
Linux i686 (32-bit) spruceos-installer-linux-i686.tar.gz

Manual Installation

  • Download spruceV4.4.2.7z
  • Extract onto your PC using 7zip
  • Copy the entire contents to a blank FAT32 formatted SD card.
  • Seriously, use 7zip to extract onto your PC THEN copy the files. IDK why but Windows breaks stuff if you use its built in extraction tool.

OTA Update

  • Devices on v4.4.1 update with the full package this time, not an incremental one. The 4.4.1 updater can't apply incremental updates outside developer mode (our mistake!), so no v4.4.1-to-v4.4.2 incremental package is published.
  • From v4.4.2 on, incremental updates work for everyone! Thanks for your patience with this feature, OTA changes often take a couple release cycles to iron out the wrinkles.

Anbernic H700 series such as the XX and RG-SP: These devices require a BaseOS TF1 image, which you can grab here. TF2 takes a standard spruceOS installation, so your spruceOS card stays freely swappable between supported devices.

Powkiddy RGB30: this device needs dArkMoss on TF1, which you can grab here. TF2 takes a standard spruceOS installation, so your spruceOS card stays freely swappable between supported devices.

BaseOS and DarkMoss images can be downloaded and installed automatically using their corresponding tabs on the Spruce Installer application for Windows, Mac and Linux!
