SQ8L v1.0.0-beta.3
What's new in beta 3
- Fixed: the host's graphics slowing down while the mouse is over the editor (#28, thanks gentleclockdivider): the editor now redraws only when something changed and no longer waits for the display's refresh.
- Fixed: no editor in the LV2 version on Linux (thanks FrettedSynth).
- Fixed: the saved zoom not applied when the editor opens in CLAP and VST3 (#22).
- HD graphics is always on: the editor is always drawn at the window's resolution, so the option is gone. Labels are sharper at 100–175% and redraws are much faster.
- Polyphony per program: the new VOICES parameter on the EMU page (1 to 64) is stored with each program; 8, the default, is the SQ-80's and stays bit-exact. OPTIONS → Polyphony now overrides it for one instance instead of being a global setting.
- Thanks to Mario Kruselj for the zoom fix, the per-program polyphony and the HD improvements.
- When updating, delete the old SQ8L files first, then copy the new ones (on Linux the LV2 bundle changed: remove the old
SQ8L.lv2folder).
Unofficial 64-bit port of SQ8L 0.91b, Siegfried Kullmann's Ensoniq SQ-80 emulation, for
macOS (universal: Apple Silicon and Intel, 10.15 or later), Windows x64 (10/11) and Linux
(x86-64 and ARM64), as VST2, VST3, Audio Unit (macOS), CLAP and LV2 (Linux).
The sound is bit-identical to the original plug-in: this build was checked against the
original's output on Apple Silicon, on Intel, on Windows and on Linux. Projects, libraries and SysEx
files made with the original load unchanged. See the README for details,
credits and the known differences.

- The plug-ins are not notarized by Apple, so macOS blocks them when they come from the
internet. Open Terminal and run (an error for a format you did not install is harmless):xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/SQ8L.component ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/SQ8L.vst3 ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/SQ8L.vst ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/CLAP/SQ8L.clap - Restart your DAW and rescan the plug-ins.
Windows
Unzip SQ8L-Windows-x64.zip and copy SQ8L.dll (VST2) to your VST plug-in folder,
SQ8L.vst3 to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3, SQ8L.clap to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\CLAP. If the old 32-bit SQ8L.dll is in the same folder,
keep a copy of it first: the files have the same name.
Linux
Unpack SQ8L-Linux-x64.tar.gz (or SQ8L-Linux-arm64.tar.gz on ARM) and copy SQ8L.so
(VST2) to ~/.vst, SQ8L.vst3 to ~/.vst3, SQ8L.clap to ~/.clap and SQ8L.lv2 to
~/.lv2. The editor needs X11 (or XWayland). The Linux version is new: reports are welcome.
Your sounds
Banks A and B and the options are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/SQ8L (macOS),
%APPDATA%\SQ8L (Windows) or ~/.config/SQ8L (Linux). To get your old banks back, copy your SQ8L_backup.dat there, or
load it with FILE → Load library.

SQ8L v1.0.0-beta.2
What's new in beta 2
- Linux (x86-64 and ARM64): VST2, VST3, CLAP and LV2, with the menus and dialogs drawn in the plug-in window.
- Resizable editor: OPTIONS → Zoom (100% to 300%) or drag the window's corner where the host allows it.
- HD graphics (OPTIONS → HD graphics, off by default): the whole editor redrawn at the window's resolution, panel, knobs, displays and labels included, sharp at any size and still looking like the original.
- More polyphony: OPTIONS → Polyphony, 8 voices like the SQ-80 (bit-exact) up to 32.
- Editor: a left click on the program number opens the program list; OPTIONS → Down arrow → next program; OPTIONS → Ask before loading banks/libraries.
- Windows: dark program list in dark hosts, native MSVC/clang-cl builds (thanks to Mario Kruselj).
- Fixes: crash when importing SysEx banks on macOS 10.15 (#12, thanks aguila-sound); file dialogs on macOS 10.15.
- The plug-in files are now named
SQ8L.*everywhere. When updating, delete the old SQ8L files first, then copy the new ones.
