Morphotype 0.9.1

A motion editor with a timeline, text that moves letter by letter, a kerning editor, smoother morphed fonts, and a faster start.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.9.1_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. Either go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to Morphotype, or run this once in Terminal (it also fixes a "damaged" message):
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Morphotype.app && open /Applications/Morphotype.app

Install on Windows

  1. Download Morphotype_0.9.1_x64-setup.exe below and run it.
  2. The installer isn't signed yet, so SmartScreen may warn. Click More info → Run anyway.

Fonts you install are registered under your user account and broadcast straight away, so they show up in other apps without a restart.

Morphotype-web.zip is the same app as a static website: unzip it and serve the folder from any web host.

What's new in 0.9.1

Motion editor

  • A timeline dock: a row for every moving layer. Entrances and Then are clips, loops and keyframed settings show their real cycles, and colours show the colours they pass through. Drag to retime, click to edit, + to add.
  • Comes in › Move from… and Then › Move to…, set by dragging dashed copies on the canvas. Then can also rise, drop, slide or shrink away.
  • A path of stops: Move to… can go on through any number of stops, each with its own wait and Feel, shown on the canvas as numbered copies joined by a dashed path.
  • Letter by letter: text can move one letter or one word at a time, without breaking it apart.
  • Slide loops go left, right, up or down, one way (a conveyor) or back and forth.
  • Groups move their children together or one by one, with a gap and an order (in order, reverse, from the centre, random).
  • The Motion panel is Simple by default (Feel: Smooth, Snappy, Bouncy, Slow); Advanced adds curves, springs, offsets, fades and order.
  • Copy and paste motion (⌥⇧⌘C / ⌥⇧⌘V).

Learn

  • Ten lessons and six starters built from library shapes.
  • Ten animated showcases, one per material: neon sign, sticker pack, liquid chrome, keycaps, melting type, arcade, plush weather, holo card, extruded 3D type and a riso print. Each is made with the Motion panel, so you can take every part apart.

Type

  • A Kerning tab in Type mode: drag the right letter or nudge with the arrow keys, pick pairs by typing or clicking, and search every kerned pair. Advanced adds kerning classes (with suggestions) and pair exceptions, exported as compact GPOS class tables.
  • Morphed fonts are drawn curve to curve, so a blend has about a third as many points as before and its letters stay exactly on the baseline, x-height and cap height.

Speed and polish

  • The app opens faster: Home loads about half the code it used to, and the editor, Type mode and templates load as you need them.
  • Moving shapes no longer stall the GPU: 50 moving lines go from about 5 to about 19 frames a second.
  • Every template now exports exactly the same pixels each time (some materials could differ by a pixel at shape edges from run to run).
  • Fixed: the playhead didn't follow a scrub while paused.

What's new in 0.9.0

Motion

  • One scene clock: play, pause, seek and replay. The project saves a timeline (length and loop), and when a loop is on, loops and pattern speeds snap to a whole number of cycles per loop so they repeat cleanly.
  • Motion on layers and groups: loops (swing, bob, spin, pulse, slide), entrances (rise, fade, pop) and DialKit-style transitions — cubic-Bézier easing, time-based springs (duration and bounce) and physics springs (stiffness, damping, mass).
  • Group stagger: each child gets the group's motion about its own centre, offset in time.
  • It runs on the GPU. Motion is applied as a transform when shapes are composited, so the engine never rebuilds — a static design does no per-frame work at all.
  • Any colour or slider in Style can be keyframed (To, Cycle, Offset) with Swing, Ramp or Flicker.
  • Modifier and shape sliders can be keyframed too. Press the keyframe button next to a setting — open More on a modifier first — and the value ramps over the clock, in the editor and in exported video. Only the renders whose outline actually moves get rebuilt.
  • New patterns: Bars, Mosaic, Barcode and Flow, and every pattern now has a Speed setting.
  • A timeline bar: play/pause (K), replay (⇧K), scrubbing, length, loop and video export (MP4 where supported, else WebM). It only appears when something in the scene moves.
  • Layout: Row, Column, Grid or Fan, with Gap, Columns, Spread and Curve.
  • Ripple / Shuffle staggers the motion and animations of a selection.

The shape kit

  • Mirror modifier: keeps one half and reflects it — left/right, top/bottom or both — across a line through the layer's position. Exact, and it works on any content.
  • Scallops modifier: round bumps or bites evenly spaced along any outline, including squares, pills and text.
  • Flower petals: Wavy (still the default, so old files don't change), Round, Pill, Oval and Pointed, each with a centre hole. All exact distance fields, so overlapping petals merge cleanly.
  • Assisted drawing: points, handles and edges snap to points, the lines through them, the edges of other shapes and the grid, with equal-spacing and size targets. The pen can draw one half and mirror it for you; ⌘D after moving a copy repeats the step, for rows of circles and stacks of pills.
  • One-click assists: Variations (eight engine-drawn takes on the selected shape), Centre dot, Face, and Arrange as tiles — shapes laid out on a sheet of coloured tiles, with faces and dots staying with their shape.

Font export

  • Kerning is carried over from the base font and written as GPOS pair kerning, so exported fonts space like the originals. Redrawn glyphs get no kerning.
  • Weight pulls glyphs back onto the baseline and the x-height (or cap height); Slant leans each glyph around half the x-height, so the sidebearings stay balanced.
  • The source font's copyright notice and licence are kept.
  • Each export gets the next version number (1.001, 1.002…), so macOS and Windows replace the installed copy instead of using a cached one.
  • Every exported font is now checked in CI with OTS and fontbakery, and the audit table is written to the job summary.

Fixes

  • The Smile shape no longer has a bitten-in end, and the Spiral no longer has inverted caps.
  • Smile and Spiral now take the line tool's cap choice — Round / Flat / Square.
  • Italic exports are no longer labelled as leaning the wrong way.

Interface

  • Sliders are rebuilt as DialKit-style bars: a fill, ticks and a hover handle that moves out of the way of the text, stretching past the ends, with a click that snaps to tenths. Hover or press Enter to type a value.
  • Segmented controls get a sliding pill, and buttons, selects, fields, switches and colour fields are restyled to match.

Templates

  • Moving cards and Course cards, built only from everyday tools. The README has a step-by-step recipe for making them from basic shapes.
  • EB Garamond joins the font library.

Also in 0.8

Along the line (pen lines, in the Line panel)

  • Zigzag / wave, Meander, Coil and Scallop, generated along the line's centre: amplitude, spacing, smoothness, coil roll.
  • Whole ridges per segment: ridges fit evenly between pen points, so an arch drawn as two legs and two quarter arcs gets tips exactly on its joins.
  • Round turns, flat ends and dashes: a 0 dash with round ends draws dots, and a thick dashed line makes barcode bars.

New materials

  • Pattern: twenty crisp, anti-aliased patterns drawn on the GPU inside any shape. Scale, weight, angle, rays, wave/bulge, centre and shift are all adjustable, and the paper can be transparent.
  • Ribbon: colour that flows along a pen line from one end to the other, with tube shading, gloss, twists and a fade-out.
  • Flat: radial gradients, and gradients that run over just part of a shape (start/end), for highlight caps and bottom fades.

Sharper output

  • PNG/JPG exports build geometry at export quality, and fields at up to two texels per pixel. Long lines and thin bars no longer show stair-steps.

Fonts

  • Anton, a heavy condensed display face (OFL).

Templates, fitted to their references

  • Squiggle arch, Pattern tiles, UFO poster, Flex icons, App icons and Pattern swatches — each compared against its reference pixel by pixel.

Projects from earlier versions open as before.

Morphotype v0.8.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Oct 11:36

Morphotype 0.8.0

Squiggles and dashes along any line, twenty GPU patterns, colour that flows along a line, and five new templates fitted to real designs pixel by pixel.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.8.0_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. Either go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to Morphotype, or run this once in Terminal (it also fixes a "damaged" message):

What's new in 0.8

Along the line (pen lines, in the Line panel)

  • Zigzag / wave, Meander, Coil and Scallop, generated along the line's centre: amplitude, spacing, smoothness, coil roll.
  • Whole ridges per segment: ridges fit evenly between pen points, so an arch drawn as two legs and two quarter arcs gets tips exactly on its joins.
  • Round turns: each turn is a circle of the radius you set, with the tip kept at the amplitude. Turns stay round even where the legs fan out or run parallel on a curve.
  • Flat ends: finish with a leg straight across the line.
  • Dashes: dash, gap and offset; a 0 dash with round ends draws dots. A thick dashed line makes barcode bars.

New materials

  • Pattern: twenty crisp, anti-aliased patterns drawn on the GPU inside any shape. Stripes, dots (optionally staggered), grid, checker, sunburst, rings, waves, chevron, Truchet arcs, fish scales, houndstooth, op-art bulge, spiral, crosses, triangles, diamonds, honeycomb, Memphis squiggles, crosshatch and gingham. Scale, weight, angle, rays, wave/bulge, centre and shift are all adjustable, and the paper can be transparent.
  • Ribbon: colour that flows along a pen line from one end to the other (five stops), with tube shading, gloss, twists and a fade-out. The engine hands the renderer the line's centre line; the shader finds each pixel's place along it.

  • Flat line ends are exact: straight, square-cornered cuts, even where a curve's first segment is tiny.
  • Tracing: the Bézier fit no longer overshoots at sharp inner corners or bulges along long straight edges.

Fonts

  • Anton, a heavy condensed display face (OFL).

Templates, fitted to their references
Each was compared against its reference pixel by pixel, and shapes were measured or fitted rather than eyeballed.

  • Squiggle arch: the zigzag arch, with spine, amplitude and turn radius fitted to the reference by IoU, plus a traced smiling flower, stars and dots.
  • Pattern tiles: fifteen tiles. Sunbursts and diagonals use the pattern material, bars are a thick dashed line, dots are dashes of zero length, the serpentine is a meander.
  • UFO poster: saucers fitted from circles and Bézier curves (dome, lens body, rim light, bumps) with measured gradient ramps, traced bursts and stars, ruled lines and Anton type.
  • Flex icons: twelve two-tone icons traced colour by colour, with each colour tucked under its black details so no seams show.
  • App icons: six squircle app icons. A ribbon coloured along its length, plus regions vectorised with least-squares gradients, a puffy bubble and a pearl frame (a dotted line).
  • Pattern swatches: every pattern on one sheet.

Also in 0.7.1

Keycaps, analysed region by region against the reference

  • Keys now affect each other: each key mirrors the key above in its top wall and the key below in its front wall, and sits in the diagonal shadow the key above casts.
  • New Keycap controls: Reflection above / below, Mirror above / below, Shadow from above (with tint, or walls only), Wall sheen for lit walls, Sky fill for shaded walls, and Even top for thin coloured plastic that glows evenly.
  • The dish is a smooth bowl with no creases. Translucent plastic now works like a colour filter, so a red part under orange plastic still reads red.
  • Keycap tower and Macro keypad retuned. Measured against the picture, the keycap colours are about twice as close as in 0.7.0.

Also in 0.7

Glass, done properly

  • Lens glass now bends light the way glass does (Snell's law through a smooth dome). Each wavelength bends a little differently, so edges fringe smoothly into colour. A Focus point handles off-centre lenses; Thickness gives you a solid block; Edge bend reflects the inside at a grazing rim; Edge film adds a hairline of thin-film colour; and Flat facets gives chamfered crystal edges.
  • Rainbow light: a studio light seen through the slopes of the glass fans out into warm, ordered spectral bands that sweep around the bevel. Shift, width and light angle are adjustable.
  • New presets: Magnifier drop and Crystal block.

New materials (all GPU, from the distance field)

  • Glow gradient: colour by distance from the edge, inside (edge → middle → core) and outside (two-colour fade). For glowing UI tiles, auras and light fades.
  • Grain gradient: a rounded, lit form in three colours, dissolved into film grain with a grainy edge.
  • Mosaic: fills a shape with blocks and bricks in six palette colours, with brick width, gaps and rounding.
  • Keycap: a 3D key with a dished top face, shaded walls, tilt, gloss, a translucent option and a contact shadow.

Every layer

  • Soften (next to Opacity): soft edges of any size, free on the GPU, and exported to SVG as a blur.

Layers

  • Clipping groups: turn on Clip to the bottom layer on a group, and everything above that layer, glows and soft edges included, only shows inside its shape. This works on the canvas, in previews and in SVG.
  • Empty layer (⇧⌘N): a blank layer to draw into. While it's selected, what you draw or add with the pen goes inside it.
  • New designs can start on a white, transparent or dark page. Pick on Home or in the start panel.

Templates measured from real designs

  • Rebuilt: Glass lens, Crystal word (a perspective glass cube from two stacked glass layers), Wavy badge icon, Iso bunny and Flame icon. Their paths are measured from the reference pictures.
  • New: Glow widgets, Health widgets, Grain spheres, Brick icons, Object words, Keycap tower, Macro keypad, Tetris card, Pixel word and Creative mode.

Morphotype v0.6.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 19 Oct 01:20

Morphotype 0.6

A real pen tool, colour tracing and reference images: recreate logos and icons exactly, as editable vectors.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.6.0_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. Either go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to Morphotype, or run this once in Terminal (it also fixes a "damaged" message):
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Morphotype.app && open /Applications/Morphotype.app

Morphotype-web.zip is the same app as a static website: unzip it and serve the folder from any web host.

What's new

Pen tool (P)

  • Click for corner points, drag for smooth curves, and click the first point to close a filled shape. Enter or Esc keeps it as an open line; ⌫ takes back the last point, and ⇧ keeps 45° steps.
  • Open paths are real lines: any width, with round, flat or square ends, and any material, stroke or depth on top.
  • Every pen shape and line stays editable point by point (Edit points is now ⇧P or Enter).

Recreate a picture

  • Colour tracing: in Add image → Trace, set Colours above 1 and a flat logo becomes one smooth vector layer per colour, stacked so no gaps show between them.
  • Reference: place a picture under your work, faded and locked, with the pen ready. It's drawn while you design but never appears in PNG, SVG or project previews. Any layer can be made a reference in its Layer section.

Templates

  • The logo and icon templates are redrawn with real pen paths: the isometric bunny's silhouette and ears, the flame's peaks and wiggly eyes, the weather icon's OK hand and arm, the wavy badge's line icon, and a glass cube with three refracting faces.

Fixes

  • Pressing Enter in a number field inside a dialog could activate the dialog's Close button and throw away your settings. Dialogs now keep focus where you left it, and Enter only commits the number.
  • Appearance lists Add stroke and Add depth side by side with proper spacing.

A home for your work, glass that sees what's behind it, 3D depth on anything, and glyphs you can build from layers.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.5.0_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. Either go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to Morphotype, or run this once in Terminal (it also fixes a "damaged" message):
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Morphotype.app && open /Applications/Morphotype.app

Morphotype-web.zip is the same app as a static website: unzip it and serve the folder from any web host.

What's new

Home and your projects

  • Morphotype opens on Home: start a design in a common size, a new font or a template, and pick up any design or font you've made, with previews and search.
  • Projects save on this device as you work. There's nothing to save, and "Saved" in the top bar confirms it. Rename, duplicate or delete (with Undo) from each card. ⌥⌘H goes Home.
  • A new design starts on a white page with a "Start with" panel: text, shape, draw, image or template.
  • Settings → At launch: show Home, or reopen the last project.

Glass and light

  • Frosted glass blurs whatever is behind it, with a tint (or a tint gradient), a lit edge, grain and a shadow.
  • Lens glass bends, magnifies and splits what's behind it into colour, with an iridescent rim. Put it over type.
  • Thermal paints heat-camera colours that glow out into the canvas. Prism light throws spectral streaks out from the shapes. Colour dots prints a colour field as an LED dot screen. Plush is soft fuzzy fabric.

Every layer

  • Depth (in Appearance, next to Stroke) gives any layer solid 3D sides in any direction and colour, over any material.

Shapes and modifiers

  • New shapes: wavy and scalloped badges, globe, asterisk, lens and cloud.
  • Foam eats bubbles through a shape. Isometric lays it on a face of a 3D cube. Pixels can now be crosses, pluses and diamonds.
  • New quick looks: Foam, Sponge, Cross stitch, Diamonds, Iso left and Iso top.
  • A Doodles background pattern, like packaging print.
  • App icons: show Apple-style keylines while you design, or add the grid as layers for a presentation shot.

Type mode

  • Glyph layers: build a glyph from shapes, cut ink traps and counters with them, or reuse another glyph as a component that follows its edits (draw the dot once, use it on i, j and !). Drag and resize layers on the glyph canvas.
  • A glyph can skip the font look, and Bake into points turns the finished glyph, look and all, into an outline you can reshape point by point.
  • Previews rebuild only the glyphs you change, and the engine caches finished glyphs, so editing big fonts stays quick.

Templates

  • 15 new templates built from these tools: Glass lens, Crystal word, Frosted 404, Thermal wings, Prism grid, Heat dots, Foam letter, Cross-stitch wall, Badge set, Pixel office, Plush box, Wavy badge icon, Iso bunny, Flame icon and Weather icon. Related layers in templates are grouped.

Fixes

  • In Type mode, picking a look highlighted every look that used the same modifier (Bitmap, Tiles and Dot matrix lit up together). Looks now match their exact settings, and the Design tab shows the active look too.
  • The type tester no longer keeps every compiled font in memory.
  • Segmented controls no longer overflow narrow panels.

Morphotype v0.4.0

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 21:23

Morphotype 0.4

Draw by hand, put photos in anything, and build the looks people are making right now from real, editable tools: sliced stamps, type all the way round a circle, pixel dissolves, dithering, echo lines, construction sheets and neo-brutalist stickers.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.4.0_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. Either go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to Morphotype, or run this once in Terminal (it also fixes a "damaged" message):
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Morphotype.app && open /Applications/Morphotype.app

Morphotype-web.zip is the same app as a static website: unzip it and serve the folder from any web host.

What's new

Draw

  • Press B to draw. Pen, Marker, Pencil and Highlighter brushes, with pen pressure, tapered ends and smoothing. [ and ] change the size.
  • Drawings stay editable: change their width or smoothing later, recolour them, or add any modifier.
  • Two handwriting fonts to go with them: Caveat and Caveat Brush.

Photos

  • Drop in a picture and choose Photo, Trace or Pixel art.
  • Photo puts the picture inside a shape. Swap the shape for a circle, a star or your text and the photo stays inside. Zoom, pan, duotone, contrast, saturation and grain are in the Style tab.
  • Pixel art turns a picture into a few inks (picked from the image or from a ready palette), with optional dithering, as squares or dots. Each colour becomes its own layer.

Every layer

  • A stroke on any material, outside, centred or inside the outline.
  • Opacity and blend modes: Multiply for overprinted inks and highlighters, Screen for light.

New modifiers

  • Slice cuts rays or pie wedges out from a centre you can move, with a ring, a hole and soft piece corners.
  • Repeat places copies around a circle, in a grid, or as a trail that steps, scales and turns.
  • Fuse melts nearby letters into one solid form.
  • Fit in circle squeezes anything into a round badge or an ellipse.
  • Echo lines draws concentric outline rings.
  • Arc now goes all the way round (bend 2).
  • Pixels can dissolve toward one side.

New materials and backgrounds

  • Dither: one-bit Bayer or noise dithering of light and gradients.
  • Halftone now follows 3D light, can print on its own paper colour and can be misregistered.
  • Distressed has a rubber-stamp grain.
  • Flat shadows can be hard-edged and any colour, for neo-brutalist graphics.
  • Backgrounds take patterns: grid paper, dot grid, ruled lines, stripes and checks.
  • New presets include Rubber stamp, Lino black, Neo-brutal, Cream label, Pop offset, Printed 3D, Voxel blue, Pixel pop and three dithers.

Construction sheets

  • Right-click a logo or lettering and choose Draw construction. It adds a tinted outline, a marker on every corner and curve extreme, and guide lines at the edges and the font's baseline, x-height, cap height and ascender, ready for a presentation.

Shapes, fonts and templates

  • New shapes: Folder, Pill, Quarter circle, Half circle and Cove, for modular logos.
  • New fonts: Young Serif, Bricolage Grotesque (variable), Caveat and Caveat Brush.
  • 13 new templates, built from the tools above rather than pictures: Printed shapes, Night notes, Echo rings, Sun stamp, Ring seal, Voxel cursor, Dot type, Folder sticker, Pixel wordmark, Pixel poster, Dither signal, Fused band and Pixel garden. Each card shows what it's made with.
  • ⇧⌘' snaps to the grid, and turns the grid on.

Faster

  • Big distance-field operations run in linear time: wide Echo, Weight and Fuse values are up to 30× faster.
  • A 2000-point scribble builds in about 5 ms.
  • Photos stay out of the undo history, so editing a design with photos is as quick as one without.

Fixes

  • On the Mac, the window buttons now sit on the centre line of the top bar.

Morphotype v0.3.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 19:21

Morphotype 0.3

Type right on the canvas, quicker colours, app icons done right, and a Type mode that teaches as you go.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.3.0_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so macOS blocks it the first time. Either go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway next to Morphotype, or run this once in Terminal (it also fixes a "damaged" message):
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Morphotype.app && open /Applications/Morphotype.app

Morphotype-web.zip is the same app as a static website: unzip it and serve the folder from any web host.

What's new

Typing on the canvas

  • Press T and click anywhere to type. Double-click any text to edit it in place. The caret and selection sit exactly on the rendered letters, whatever the font or material.
  • A small bar above the text sets the font, size, colour and alignment. Warp and other distortions pause while you type and come back when you finish.
  • Esc or a click outside finishes. A text left empty disappears.
  • The layer name field now says what it is, so it can't be mistaken for the text itself.

Colour and background, up front

  • The Design tab shows the layer's material and colours first. One click on a swatch recolours the whole material, so chrome, puffy or aura stay believable in any hue.
  • The background is now the bottom row of the Layers panel, and a round chip in the dock opens background presets from anywhere.

Editing like a pro tool

  • ⇧ keeps proportions when resizing, as in Figma (there's a setting to flip it). Text always scales evenly from the corners.
  • Hold ⌥ to measure the distance from the selection to the layer under the pointer, or to the artboard edges.
  • Live readouts while moving, resizing and rotating. ⇧Enter selects the parent group.

App icons

  • Choose macOS, iOS · Android or Custom under App icon tile. macOS icons include the rounded tile and shadow; iOS and Android get a full square, because the system rounds the corners, with a preview of the system mask.
  • Turn the tile into an ordinary layer to give it any material or modifier.

Type mode

  • Starting a font is now a project: name it, then reshape an existing typeface or start blank and draw each glyph over a guide.
  • The panel is split into Font, Glyph and Use & export, so you only see the tools for the job at hand.
  • Type basics: a short guide to the parts of a letter, spacing, consistency, optical tricks and font naming. The metric lines in the glyph editor explain themselves when clicked, and a short tour shows the way around.
  • Use in Design asks for the font's own name, refuses names that reuse the base font's, lists what makes your font different, and can switch text set in the base font to yours.

New materials, shapes and templates

  • Letterpress (blind emboss or deboss), Halftone (dots or lines that fade), Risograph (two misregistered inks) and a print texture for Flat. Nine new presets.
  • New Smile and Starburst shapes.
  • Six new templates: Critter icons, Mascot card, Pixel ID card, Star lockup, Badge row and Riso zine. A new What are you making? row starts a blank logo, app icon, post, thumbnail, business card or font at the right size.
  • New canvas sizes: business card, ID badge and A4 flyer.

@github-actions github-actions released this 18 Oct 15:42
f676a76

Morphotype 0.2

A redesigned editor, per-layer materials and a font editor.

Install on a Mac

  1. Download Morphotype_0.2.0_universal.dmg below (it runs on Apple silicon and Intel).
  2. Open it and drag Morphotype into Applications.
  3. The app isn't notarised yet, so the first time, right-click it and choose Open. If macOS says it is damaged, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Morphotype.app once.

Morphotype-web.zip is the same app as a static website: unzip it and serve the folder from any web host.

What's new

Editing like a design tool

  • Click to select, drag to move, and use the handles to resize or rotate. ⇧ keeps proportions or snaps angles, ⌥ scales from the centre.
  • Smart guides snap to the artboard and other layers, and there's an optional grid.
  • Marquee selection, multi-select, align and distribute, flip, lock and hide.
  • Groups and merged shapes. Drag layers to reorder them or move them into groups. Right-click menus everywhere.
  • Edit points: double-click any outline (or press P) to drag bezier points and handles, add points on a line, or make points smooth or sharp.
  • Warp with Arch, Arc, Bulge, Flag, Rise, Fish, Inflate, Squeeze and Twist presets, plus a 16-point net you drag on the canvas.
  • Break apart splits text or a traced image into one layer per letter.

A material for every layer

  • Styles now belong to layers, so a mascot's eyes can be ink while its body is puffy.
  • New materials: Sticker, Aura gradient, Holographic, Retro 3D and Flat gradients, alongside Liquid chrome, Glow glass, Puffy, Neon, Glossy glyph and Distressed.
  • 34 presets with live previews, and searchable.
  • Canvas backgrounds: solid, linear, radial or aura mesh gradients, film grain, and an app-icon tile with gloss, shadow and a holographic rim.
  • Cut and Mask apply to the layer directly below, like clipping masks.

Type mode: design a font

  • An A–Z, a–z, 0–9 and punctuation grid, previewed with your style.
  • One-click looks for the whole font: Bitmap, Dot matrix, Soft pixel, Tiles, Rounded, Heavy, Inline, Melting and more.
  • Edit any glyph's points or width, or give it its own modifiers. Add any character, including ones the base font lacks, and draw or trace it.
  • A live tester that uses the real compiled font.
  • Export as .ttf, .woff, or a web font kit (TTF, WOFF, @font-face CSS and a specimen page). You can also install the font on this Mac or use it straight away in Design mode.

Made for the keyboard

  • ⌘K searches every command, shape, style preset, canvas size and setting.
  • Every action has a shortcut. ? shows them all, along with a short guide.
  • Settings with instant search (⌘,).

Other improvements

  • Custom popovers that scroll on their own, a curated colour picker with an eyedropper, a custom icon set, and hidden scrollbars.
  • Canvas formats for Instagram posts and stories, YouTube thumbnails, X headers, OG images, app icons and more.
  • Export JPG, or copy the image to the clipboard. SVG export now has one path per object, in its own colour.
  • New shapes: chat bubble, spiral, flower, arrow, bolt and moon.
  • Twelve new templates, including a bitmap poster, Sudo display, a pixel letter, mascot app icons, aura tiles, a holo letter, a retro sign, a YouTube thumbnail and an Instagram quote.
  • The window controls line up with the toolbar.

Projects from 0.1 open automatically and are converted to the new format.
