Screepub 0.11.1

Your Kindle file is ready almost instantly, with nothing else to install.

Kindles over USB, faster

  • Screepub makes the Kindle file itself. Copying to a Kindle over USB
used to need Calibre, and waited on it to start every time. Now Screepub
writes the file in a fraction of a second, with nothing installed. It is
    marked Beta.
  • Calibre is only for the best-layout file. With Calibre, its KFX
plugin and Kindle Previewer installed, modern Kindles still get KFX.
Emailing to Kindle needs no tools at all.

Good to know

  • The new Kindle file reads back whole in two independent e-book readers,
but hasn't been opened on a real Kindle yet. Tell us how it goes.
  • Kindles from before 2012 can't read it. Use Save a file, then MOBI.
  • Kindle files Calibre made for your books are rebuilt once, the next time
    you send each one.

Mac: download Screepub-macOS.dmg (notarized, for Macs with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or later), open it, drag Screepub to Applications, and double-click. Its SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS-app.

Screepub 0.10.0

Screepub now needs a Mac with Apple silicon: on an Intel Mac, 0.9.0 is the last version, and it keeps working. The pictures in your script now come through into the book.

Your script's pictures, in the book

  • Storyboards and photos stay where they sat. Panels, reference
photos and lookbook pages used to be dropped, leaving only the text
around them. Now they appear in place. Turn off Pictures from the
    script
in Settings for a smaller file.
  • A designed title page becomes the cover. A full-page title card at
the front now shows as the book's cover in your library, instead of a
plain one. Turn off Title card as the cover to keep it as the first
    page.
  • Saved Fountain files are clean. A Fountain file you saved for a
screenwriting app used to carry Screepub's own hidden notes. Now it
    leaves them behind.

Good to know

  • Pictures, the cover, FDX files, Eject on Windows and Linux, and the
device report buttons are marked Beta: they work in our tests, but
haven't been tried widely yet. Tell us how it goes.
  • Most e-ink screens are greyscale, so a color picture reads as black and
white. The Kindle file Screepub makes without Calibre leaves pictures out
    for now.
  • On an Intel Mac with the older Mac app, choose Not Now when this update
is offered: it will not open there. Download Screepub 0.9.0 from its
    release page instead.

Telling us about a device now reaches the internet, and only when you press the button. Sending starts right where your book appears, and a script PDF can become a script you edit again.

Convert, then send, on one page

  • Your book and your reader, side by side. The Send tab is gone.
When a script converts, its first page appears beside your reader,
asked once and remembered. A plugged-in Kindle gets one button that
    copies the right file.
  • Eject your reader after a copy. After copying over USB, the
button becomes Eject Kindle, so you can unplug safely without a
    trip to the Finder.
  • Get the script back to edit. Under Other ways, Save a file
now offers FDX for Final Draft and most screenwriting apps, beside
Fountain. It is rebuilt from the PDF's pages, so revision colors and
    exact page breaks stay behind.
  • The first page types itself out while you wait. It is on by
default. Turn off Animate the page in Settings if you'd rather not
watch. Typewriter sounds adds key clicks, and starts off.

Good to know

  • My device isn't here and the It worked and It did not work
answers send what you typed or chose, the app version and your system
to a service that keeps only counts and the day.
  • Eject on Windows and Linux, and FDX files in screenwriting apps,
haven't been tried on a real reader or app yet.

Screepub 0.8.0

There is one Screepub for Mac now, and it updates itself.

One app on your Mac

  • The older Mac app becomes the new one. If you use it with its
update check on, it installs the new app in its own place and opens
    it. Your books are untouched.
  • One download for every Mac. Screepub-macOS.dmg works on Apple
Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 13 or later.

If you used Screepub Desktop

  • It updates into the same app. A few things happen once: it asks
again whether to check for updates, macOS asks again to reach your
reader the first time you copy to it, and Finder and the Dock still say
Screepub Desktop until you rename it. If you had both apps, delete
    Screepub Desktop.

Good to know

  • Settings you tuned for a script in the older Mac app start from the
defaults once. Your books are untouched.
  • The new app has no Cancel during a conversion. Most scripts finish in
    seconds.
  • Homebrew no longer installs the Mac app; download it instead. The
command-line converter stays: brew install --formula ssandweiss/tap/screepub.

Mac: download Screepub-macOS.dmg (notarized, universal, macOS 13 or later), open it, drag Screepub to Applications, and double-click. Its SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS-app.

Screepub 0.7.5

Report a bug no longer puts your folder or file names in the public page it opens. This release makes copying, updating and Kindle files harder to break.

Your books are safer

  • A book survives being unplugged right after a copy. Unplugging
the moment a copy finished could leave a cut-off book under the
book's own name. Now the new copy is fully written before it replaces
    the old one.
  • Kindle files can't hang forever. Building one with Calibre or
Kindle Previewer could sit there indefinitely. Now it gives up after
    ten minutes and says so.
  • Updates finish cleanly. After installing, the window kept working
against the new version until it restarted, which could fail in odd
ways. Now it waits for running work, then restarts, offering Restart
    now
after two minutes. A harmless cleanup hiccup no longer calls a
    good update failed.

Fixed in the window

  • Convert it again converts again. It used to take you to the
Convert page showing the same result, with no way to convert.
  • Long titles and file paths stay inside their boxes. They used to
    run off the edge.
  • The scene list on Read is one Tab stop. Tab used to visit every
scene before the script. Now the up and down arrows move between
    scenes.

Good to know

  • Screepub needs macOS 13 or later, as it always has. On an older Mac it
used to open and then fail every conversion. Now the Mac says so before
    it opens.

Notarized universal build for macOS 14+ (Apple Silicon and Intel).

Screepub 0.7.4

The window makes use of a wide screen. Thinner margins, the scene list beside the script, and a Settings preview you can actually read.

Room to read and tune

  • The page fills a wide window. It used to stop at a column in
the middle, with wide empty margins and the brads drifting toward the
center. Now it runs nearly edge to edge, and the brads stay near the
left edge, the way the holes sit on a letter page. New windows open at
    1280 by 800.
  • The scene list sits beside the script. On Read, it used to slide
out over the left margin, on top of the brads. Now it has a column of
its own, and showing or hiding it never moves the script.
  • A bigger Settings preview. It is about twice as wide, runs the
height of the window, and stays put while you scroll through the
settings. Each group of settings sits in its own box.

Good to know

  • Under 900 wide the window keeps its narrow layout: the scene list goes
above the script, and the preview below the settings.

Screepub 0.7.3

The window can now open Amazon's and Calibre's web pages and fetch one Calibre plugin, each only when you press its button. It sends a script every way the Mac app does, and finishes its own updates.

The window catches up with the Mac app

  • Send a script anywhere from the Send page. It used to copy
only to a reader plugged in over USB. Now it also adds the book to Apple
Books, hands it to Amazon's Send to Kindle, attaches it to an email, or
saves a copy where you choose.
  • The best Kindle file, set up and ready. On a Mac or Windows PC, the
Send page checks for the three free tools that build it, and
installs the KFX plugin for you. When you send to a Kindle, the file now
builds as the page opens, instead of seeming stuck for half a minute.
  • Your own starting point, and your own folder. Use these for new
    scripts
, on the Settings page, makes one script's settings the start
for every PDF you convert next. Change… on the Convert page picks
    where books are saved.

Fixed in the window

  • Updates restart Screepub for you. They used to install quietly and
wait for you to quit and reopen. Now Update to appears beside the
version stamp. Click it, and Screepub installs, waits for any work in
progress, and reopens. The daily-check switch also stops looking off
    after every restart.
  • You can drag the window. On a Mac it has no title bar, so there
was nowhere to grab it. Drag the empty strip along its top.
  • Side-by-side dialogue switches back on. Once a script showed two
characters talking at once one after the other, switching back did
    nothing.

Good to know

  • Updating from 0.7.2 still ends with a quit and reopen, because 0.7.2
    can't restart itself.
  • Amazon silently drops an emailed book unless it comes from an address on
your approved list. The email row's Open Amazon's page opens the
    page that holds it.

The Linux and Windows downloads keep the same names from now on.

Downloads that stay put

  • The Linux and Windows files have names that won't change. They used
to carry the version number, like Screepub-0.7.1-setup.exe, so a saved
link broke at the next release. They are now Screepub-linux-amd64.deb,
    Screepub-linux-x86_64.rpm and Screepub-windows-x64-setup.exe, at
    every release.

Good to know

  • If your Mac runs 0.7.1's window with updates switched on, this is the
first release it can install for itself. It asks before installing, and
    afterwards you quit and reopen.

Screepub 0.7.1

The window can now look for a newer Screepub, and only if you switch it on. This is 0.7.0, complete: that release went out without the window's downloads, because of a signing mistake on our side.

The window does more of what the Mac app does

  • Screepub can tell you when a newer version exists. Open the version
stamp at the foot of the page and, under Updates, turn on Look for a
    new version once a day
. Off by default, and nothing is sent but the
request itself. Installing swaps the app in place, then you quit and
    reopen. macOS only for now.
  • Page numbers are on by default, in both apps. They were off because
we called them furniture. They are the script's coordinate system: a
note that says "the beat on 42 is late" needs page 42 to exist. Turn off
The PDF's page numbers in Settings for a cleaner page.
  • Show in Finder. The finished book used to be a path printed on
screen. The result screen now reveals it, selected. On Windows the
button says Show in File Explorer.
  • A refused file offers to report itself. When a file is not a
screenplay Screepub can read, the failure screen now opens a pre-filled
bug report on GitHub, carrying what went wrong.

Fixed for the Mac

  • The window's Mac download opens without a warning. 0.6.0's
Screepub-Desktop-macOS-universal.dmg was signed but not notarized, so
macOS refused to open it. This one is notarized, and the release checks
    it before publishing.

Good to know

  • This is the first version that can update itself, so 0.6.0's window
will not hear about it. Download this one by hand, and the next can
    arrive on its own.
  • The update switch is absent on Linux and Windows for now.
  • Screepub-macOS.dmg is still the Mac app we support. The window's
    updater updates only the window.
