Patched /usr/sbin/mDNSResponder for Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, built from Apple's mDNSResponder-258.21 (the version 10.6.8 ships) plus the fixes in #1.

What it fixes

Stock 258.21 can leave hostname lookups dead until the daemon is restarted (sudo killall mDNSResponder):

  • unanswered unicast queries back off for up to an hour;
  • new lookups of the same name join the backed-off query as duplicates and inherit its state;
  • a DNS configuration change with the same server, or wake, never kicks those queries.

This build caps unanswered-query retries at 60 s (LLQ polling and answered, cache-driven queries are unchanged) and revives stuck plain unicast queries on DNS configuration change, wake/restart, and duplicate promotion — skipping disabled resolvers. Bonjour multicast, wide-area LLQ, Back to My Mac private queries and interface-scoped queries are untouched.
