The first chibipop release that runs on Linux.

A pre-v1 test build. Windows is unchanged from v0.9.3 except for the version
number; everything new here is the Wayland port, contributed by @unusualcrow
in #29.

Assets

Platform Asset
Windows 10/11 chibipop-v0.9.9-windows-x64.zip — unzip, run chibipop.exe
Linux, Wayland chibipop-v0.9.9-linux-x64.tar.gz — tar xzf, run chibipop settings

Neither carries a dictionary. Add your own Yomitan archives in the settings
window. See the README.

Linux, in one screen

It targets Wayland compositors that speak the wlroots protocol family.
Hyprland is the reference compositor, with sway and friends first-class
alongside it. KDE Plasma works through the desktop portals. GNOME is
best-effort. X11 is not a target.

  • OCR is the bundled meikiocr engine, not Windows OCR. Three ONNX models
ship inside the tarball, hash-pinned and verified at startup. Nothing is
    downloaded, ever.
  • Wayland has no global key observation, so the compositor's own keybind is
the trigger. Two lines on Hyprland:
bind = ALT, F, exec, chibipop ctl trigger-down
bindr = ALT, F, exec, chibipop ctl trigger-up

  • chibipop never replaces its own binary on Linux. Check for updates
    reports and stops.

The tarball needs GLIBC_2.39 and GLIBCXX_3.4.31 or newer, plus a
CJK font. Those are measured, not estimated. A distro older than either wants
the source AUR package instead.

Everything else is in docs/LINUX.md.

Known limits

  • Vertical text is beta on Linux. Measured over the 152-crop benchmark
    corpus: horizontal 1.8 % CER / 95.1 % hit-scan, vertical 12.5 % CER / 81.3 %
hit-scan. Expect a dropped first glyph or a trailing 。 on a column. Both
floors are enforced as a CI gate, so this is degraded, not broken.
  • OCR-to-clipboard cannot work on stock GNOME. Mutter advertises neither
clipboard protocol a focus-less client needs. chibipop says so once at
    startup; nothing else is affected.
