What's new

• Claude Code. Connect it from Agent access, alongside Codex, Cursor and Grok CLI.
• See what you approve. The approval prompt shows the command that will run and where. The agent's name and purpose are declared by the agent itself, and Details marks them as unverified.
• A first run that leads somewhere. After your first credential, Ask Key takes you to connecting an agent and gives you a prompt to try that works in any folder.
• Clearer names. Permissions are now Allow, Ask every time and Hidden.
• A calmer look. New design across the app, with the real app icon on the welcome page and approval prompts.
• Prompts that stay out of your way. Approval prompts no longer bring the Ask Key window forward, and Touch ID prompts are ready for your finger without an extra click.

Upgrading from 0.1.0

1. Quit Ask Key from the menu bar.
2. Drag the new Ask Key from the DMG into Applications and choose Replace. Your credentials stay where they are.
3. Codex users: open Agent access, choose Connect… next to Codex once, and trust the new hook when asked. Other clients need nothing.

Install

1. Download AskKey-0.2.0.dmg below. To verify it, also download the .sha256 file and run shasum -a 256 -c AskKey-0.2.0.dmg.sha256.
2. Open the DMG and drag Ask Key into Applications. Keep its name and location, or agents cannot connect.
3. Open Ask Key and follow the welcome page.

Good to know

• There is still no backup. Keep the originals of your credentials somewhere else.
• No automatic update; new versions are published here. Requires macOS 14 or later.
• Once you approve a program, Ask Key cannot control what that program does with the value.

AskKey is a macOS menu bar app that keeps your API keys, tokens and SSH keys encrypted on your Mac. When an AI agent needs one, it has to ask you first, and it never sees the value: AskKey hands it only to the program that actually uses it.

What you can do

• Store text and file credentials, or import a .env file.
• Give each credential one permission: Allow, Ask (default) or Hidden.
• Approve a request once, or allow a credential for a few minutes.
• Connect Codex, Cursor and Grok CLI from the Agent access page.

Install

1. Download AskKey-0.1.0.dmg below. To verify it, also download the .sha256 file and run shasum -a 256 -c AskKey-0.1.0.dmg.sha256.
