traditionally those are used for next and previous files so you need to define in what context those be changed and thus I am GUESSING you mean when used with word selection via F7 ?

but it IS working there for me in current pre-release It will even span across page breaks

in mouse mode the latest improvement was 2 clicks for a word or 3 for a line of words just like a browser / touch tablet

Mouse mode has also been improved so drag is word selection

Keyboard selection is Via F7 which is more controlled / greater range of abilities thus means Contrl keys etc can be used inside that mode different to in the document controls,
HOWEVER the downside is the start with F7 has to be anchored E.G. first at top of pages characters thus need more keyboard moves to be effective for spanning words.

Currently Shift + Left Arrow and Shift + Right Arrow moves the right edge of selection and Shift + Down Arrow and Shift + Up Arrow moves it up / down.

I'll add commands CmdExtendSelectionCharLeft, CmdExtendSelectionCharRight, CmdExtendSelecitonWordLeft, CmdExtendSelectionRight which you'll be able to bind to any keyboard shortcut. Or use from Ctrl + K command palette.

ctrl+shift+right and ctrl+shift+left are already used so I can't change them.

One possibility would be to have those keybindings act differently with active selection. Need to think about it.

There's also keyboard text selection mode now in pre-release, activated with F7

Added, will be in the next pre-release.

There are 4 new commands that move the end of the current text selection:

• CmdExtendSelectionCharLeft
• CmdExtendSelectionCharRight
• CmdExtendSelectionWordLeft
• CmdExtendSelectionWordRight

They work on a selection made any way you like — dragging with the mouse, double-clicking a word, Ctrl + A, or F7 keyboard selection — and the selection can grow across page boundaries. Moving toward the anchor shrinks the selection, moving away grows it.

They have no default shortcut, since Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right are already taken by file navigation. To get the keys you asked for, add this to the settings file (Settings / Advanced Options...):

That overrides the file-navigation bindings on those keys. If you'd rather keep those, pick different keys, e.g. Alt + Shift + Right / Alt + Shift + Left.
