@t1mdurden t1mdurden released this 08 Oct 20:32

The first public release of Cue: a private screen-and-audio copilot for macOS. A small overlay answers from what is on your screen and what is being said in your call, with the model running on your own Mac by default.

Install

  1. Download Cue-0.1.0-macos-arm64.zip, unzip it, and move Cue.app to /Applications.
  2. Cue is not notarized, so macOS blocks the first launch. Open it once, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Or, in Terminal:
    xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Cue.app
  3. To run answers on this Mac, install the model servers: brew install llama.cpp whisper-cpp. A cloud choice (Claude subscription, Anthropic API, OpenAI API, another endpoint) does not need them, apart from whisper.cpp for on-device transcription.

On first launch Setup asks for Microphone, Screen Recording and System Audio Recording, then where answers should come from. Nothing is downloaded or started until you pick. Cue has no Dock icon: Cmd+Enter asks about the screen, Cmd+Shift+\ starts listening, Cmd+, opens Settings.

Requirements

  • Apple silicon, macOS 14.2 or later.
  • For local answers: 8 GB of memory for the small model, 12 GB+ for the recommended one. Models download in Setup (1.6-5.8 GB, plus 1.6 GB for speech).

In this release

  • Setup before anything else: the three macOS permissions with live status, then the backend and its model, checked with one test answer.
  • Five backends: on this Mac (llama.cpp), Claude subscription (Claude Code CLI), Anthropic API, OpenAI API, any OpenAI-compatible endpoint (OpenRouter, Gemini, Ollama, LM Studio).
  • Local models: Qwen3-VL 4B / 2B / 8B, recommended by memory, or any GGUF from Hugging Face, or files on disk; resumable downloads with progress.
  • On-device transcription with whisper.cpp; on-device screen text with macOS Vision.
  • Modes with your own prompt and files, history with model-written summaries, hidden from screen sharing.
  • API keys and conversation content are encrypted at rest; the server listens on 127.0.0.1 only.
