This page tracks near-term direction and is intentionally living — it changes every release. For what already shipped, see Changelog Highlights or the full CHANGELOG.md.

Themes

Stabilize toward 1.0

The pre-1.0 promise: public surfaces (CLI flags, MCP tool signatures, knowledge-file layout) should stop shifting. 0.6.x is the shakedown cruise.

• Lock the 27-tool MCP surface; future additions land under new names, no silent renames.
• Freeze cairn.json keys + CAIRN_* env var names (semver from 1.0).
• Document the OKF format version contract (currently v0.2) so external tools can rely on the markdown front-matter shape.

Parser coverage

• C/C++: scanner recognizes .c/.cpp/.h and header-sniffs, but no tree-sitter parser ships yet (files are recorded as parse_errors). Interim: configure a pre-built SCIP index. A native parser is the real fix.
• Rust: not in EXTENSION_MAP at all today; route via rust-analyzer scip for now.
• Routes / service calls: route detection is TS/JS-only; service-call detection covers TS/JS/Go/Kotlin/Java. Python (FastAPI), Swift (URLSession), etc. are gaps.

Indexing correctness

The audit that produced 0.6.1 surfaced a class of "incremental reindex under-refreshes derived state" bugs. Continuing themes:

• Tighten cairn update semantics (when it must vs. may rebuild derived indexes) and document the contract explicitly.
• Better signals when SCIP/tree-sitter merge rates are low (today: silent revert to pure-SCIP).

Agent ergonomics

• Tighten the install template (_INSTRUCTIONS_BODY) so fresh AGENTS.md files stay in sync with the committed one (0.6.1 fixed three drifts; the structural fix is a single source of truth the installer reads from).
• More skill evals for the resolution-aware querying rules.

Tooling / hygiene

• architecture.html has no regeneration step — it keeps silently rotting against docs/architecture-overview.md. Either add a make arch-html target or delete the HTML and link to the rendered markdown.
• One canonical git-hook installer (scripts/install-hooks.sh vs. cairn hooks install diverge today).
