Parchly 1.2.0

Choose a tag to compare

@tapariapurv tapariapurv released this 19 Oct 15:20

Parchly 1.2.0 adds a Home window and a sidebar that's always there, makes tasks easier to type, and makes typing faster in long notes.

Update

Parchly updates itself. Choose Parchly › Check for Updates… to get it now. New here?

curl -fsSL https://tapariapurv.github.io/parchly/install.sh | bash

New

  • 🏠 Home: start a new document, open one, make a note from the clipboard, open the guide, or pick a recent document. It shows at launch and when you close the last document, or press ⇧⌘H. Drop Markdown files on it to open them.
  • 🗂️ Sidebar on by default, with a toolbar button to hide it. For an unsaved note it lists your recent documents.
  • ☑️ Type [] and a space to start a task. [ ], [x] and - [] work too, in both Document and Source mode. ⌘L and Task List also fix up lines written as [ ] item.

Fixes

  • ☑️ Tasks look right everywhere
    • In the preview, a task's text no longer drops below its checkbox in lists that have blank lines between items.
    • Wrapped task text lines up under the text, not under the box.
    • Strikethrough starts at the text, and sub-tasks under a done task aren't crossed out.
  • ↩️ Wrapped lines hang correctly in the editor for tasks, bullets, numbered items and quotes in Source mode.
  • 📊 Table column alignment (:--, :-:, --:) now shows in the editor, not just the preview.
  • 🧭 Jumping to a heading from the outline, ⇧⌘O or a #link puts the caret after the hidden ##, so typing doesn't edit the heading markers.
  • 🎛️ The formatting bar works even while the sidebar or Find field has focus.
  • ⇧ Return is no longer confused by Shift being held in another app.

Faster

  • Opening a saved file, switching Document/Source, or changing text size on a big note is about 11× faster (1 MB: 21 s → 1.9 s).
  • First load of a 1 MB note went from 3.6 s to about 2 s.
  • Typing in a 1 MB note went from 12 ms to 7 ms per keystroke, because only the visible text is laid out.
  • A hidden preview is no longer re-rendered on every keystroke.

Tested

  • A new app-level self-test opens real documents and checks save, revert, the sidebar (listing, filters, new file), the outline, anchor and wiki links, pasted images, Find, modes, the preview, themes, every setting, Home, and new-from-clipboard.
  • It also clicks every formatting-bar button and fires every menu command against a live document, and checks that each one undoes exactly.
  • New editor checks cover clicking checkboxes and links, and measure the exact wrap indent of every list type.

Parchly 1.1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@tapariapurv tapariapurv released this 19 Oct 12:43

Parchly 1.1.2 fixes code blocks and links, and makes paste and drag-and-drop smarter. It's the result of a full stress-test pass.

Update

Parchly updates itself. Choose Parchly › Check for Updates… to get it now. New here?

curl -fsSL https://tapariapurv.github.io/parchly/install.sh | bash

Fixes

  • 🧱 Code blocks
    • Typing at the end of an open code block no longer auto-pairs brackets or leaks indentation past the closing fence.
    • Press Return after ```lang and the closing fence is added for you.
    • Smart indentation after { [ ( :, and {|} expands onto its own line.
    • Tab inserts spaces in code.
    • Padding around the first and last lines of each code panel.
  • 🔗 Links look like links
    • Links are always underlined (wiki links dotted), with a pointing-hand cursor.
    • In Document mode a plain click opens a link. ⌘-click works anywhere, including the line you're editing.
  • 📋 Paste & drop
    • Files copied or dropped from Finder become Markdown links, and images become images, with paths relative to your note.
    • Pasting a screenshot or copied image saves it next to the note and inserts it. Parchly asks for folder access if needed.
  • 📄 Export: exported HTML now typesets math and Mermaid diagrams.

Tested

New automated checks cover:

  • code blocks and link styling
  • file, image, multi-line and 220 KB pastes
  • exact undo for every format command
  • Unicode, emoji and IME input
  • a 500-step random fuzz in each mode that must never crash and must undo back to the original

A hands-on pass on a real Mac covered clicking links (with the folder-access prompt), the formatting-bar buttons, the preview (KaTeX, Mermaid), PDF/HTML export, and copying the whole document.

Parchly 1.1.0

Choose a tag to compare

@tapariapurv tapariapurv released this 18 Oct 13:17

Parchly icon

Parchly 1.1 is the first release under the new name. Inkdown is now Parchly, because another editor already used that name. It has a new icon, a redesigned interface, themes, a formatting bar, cross-linked notes, math and diagrams, and it now updates itself.

Install

curl -fsSL https://tapariapurv.github.io/parchly/install.sh | bash

Or download Parchly.dmg below and drag it into Applications. On first launch, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway. You only do this once.

Coming from Inkdown 1.0? Run the command above once to switch over, then drag the old Inkdown app to the Trash. From now on Parchly keeps itself up to date.

What's new

✨ A calmer, more polished design

  • Downright-style document page: exact Paper Light / Warm Dark colours, serif type, generous rhythm, an H1–H6 badge beside the caret's heading, rounded checkboxes and inline code pills.
  • Liquid Glass (macOS 26) on the toolbar, Document/Source switch, formatting bar and status pill.
  • The new icon is a dog-eared parchment page.

🧰 Formatting bar: no syntax required

A floating bar with every tool: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, link, bullets, numbers, tasks, quote, code block, table and divider. Show or hide it with ⇧⌘B.

🎨 Nine themes

Paper (follows light/dark), Paper Light, Warm Dark, Nord, Solarized Light, Solarized Dark, High Contrast, Sepia, Forest and Midnight. The preview follows your theme too.

⚙️ Settings (⌘,)

Theme swatches, text size, formatting bar, line numbers in Source mode (now off by default), spelling and update preferences.

🔄 Automatic updates

Parchly checks daily and installs signed updates in the background. Parchly › Check for Updates… checks right away.

🔗 Notes that link together

  • [[Note]], [[Note|Label]], [[Note#Heading]] and [text](#heading) links.
  • ⌘-click to follow a link. Links to notes that don't exist yet create them.

📐 Every Markdown element

  • Math ($…$, $$…$$, KaTeX) and Mermaid diagrams in the preview, bundled for offline use.
  • GitHub alerts (> [!NOTE], [!TIP], [!WARNING]…), ==highlights==, :emoji:, setext headings and heading anchors.
  • Syntax-coloured code in the editor, preview and Quick Look.
  • Images inline in the editor, plus footnotes, reference definitions and HTML tags styled in place.

⌨️ Smarter typing

  • Select text and type *, _, `, ~ or = to wrap it.
  • Brackets auto-close.
  • Backspace inside an empty pair removes both halves.

🚀 Faster on big files

Typing in a 1 MB document dropped from about 50 ms to about 12 ms per keystroke.

📖 Built-in guide

A friendly getting-started note opens on first launch. Find it again under Help › Markdown Guide.

🧪 Tested

A new automated suite (scripts/test.sh) drives the real editor through:

  • lists, tables, wrapping and auto-pairing
  • undo and redo
  • copy, cut and paste (including rich text and URLs)
  • every format command
  • round-trip fidelity and performance

Inkdown 1.0.1

Choose a tag to compare

@tapariapurv tapariapurv released this 18 Oct 10:26

Inkdown 1.0.1 makes Inkdown sandboxed and Mac App Store ready, with no change to how you write.

Install / update

curl -fsSL https://tapariapurv.github.io/inkdown/install.sh | bash

Or download Inkdown.dmg below and drag Inkdown into Applications. The build isn't notarized, so on first launch go to System Settings › Privacy & Security › Open Anyway.

What's new

  • 🔒 App Sandbox. Inkdown can now only touch the files and folders you open or allow, which is the same protection Mac App Store apps get.
  • 📂 One-click folder access. The Files sidebar asks once ("Allow Access…") to list a folder's other Markdown files. Inkdown remembers that choice across launches and uses it to open relative links, create new files and show local images in the preview.
  • 🖼️ More reliable preview images. Local images are served to the preview through a private inkdown-file:// scheme instead of broad disk access.
  • 🛡️ Privacy manifest. Inkdown declares that it collects no data and does no tracking. The privacy policy is at https://tapariapurv.github.io/inkdown/privacy.html.
  • 💻 Universal build for Apple silicon and Intel.

Notes

  • Your settings start fresh after this update, because sandboxed apps keep preferences in their own container.
  • Everything from 1.0 is unchanged: Document and Source modes, smart lists and tables, the live preview, and the Quick Look extension.

Inkdown 1.0.0

Choose a tag to compare

@tapariapurv tapariapurv released this 18 Oct 05:43

Inkdown icon

Inkdown 1.0 is the first release of a calm, native Markdown editor for macOS. Write in a page-like Document view, flip to Source when you want the raw text, and press Space in Finder to preview any .md file. Your files stay plain Markdown on disk: no library, no database, no sidecar files.

Install

One line (recommended). Paste into Terminal:

curl -fsSL https://tapariapurv.github.io/inkdown/install.sh | bash

This downloads the app below, puts it in Applications, turns on the Quick Look extension and opens Inkdown.

Or download the DMG. Open Inkdown.dmg and drag Inkdown into Applications. This build isn't notarized by Apple, so the first launch is blocked. Go to System Settings › Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway next to Inkdown, and confirm. You only need to do this once.

Requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on Apple silicon or Intel.

What's in 1.0

✍️ Document mode

  • Markdown syntax hides as you read and comes back on the line you're editing, so the file stays exact while the page looks finished.
  • Headings in a serif type scale, with an H1–H6 badge in the margin beside the caret's heading.
  • Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code and links render inline. ⌘-click opens a link.
  • Bullets draw as • / ◦. Task checkboxes toggle with a click or ⌘L, and done items are struck through.
  • Quotes get a tan margin bar. Code blocks get a soft panel. Rules draw as lines.
  • Tables render as a real grid, with columns aligned however the source is spaced.

⌨️ Smart editing

  • Return continues bullets, numbered lists, tasks and quotes. Return on an empty item ends the list, or outdents it if it's nested.
  • Tab / Shift-Tab nest and outdent list items, and numbered lists renumber themselves.
  • In tables, Tab / Shift-Tab move between cells and reformat the source, Return adds a row, and Return on an empty row leaves the table.
  • Backspace right after a list marker or heading prefix removes it.
  • Pasting a URL over selected text makes a link.
  • Shortcuts for every format: ⌘B, ⌘I, ⇧⌘X, ⌃`, ⌘K, ⌘1–⌘6, ⌘0, ⇧⌘7/8/9, ⌥⌘Q, ⌥⌘C, ⌥⌘T, ⌘[ ⌘]. You can also move lines (⌃⌘↑/↓) and duplicate them (⇧⌘D).

🧾 Source mode & preview

  • Source mode (⌃⌘2): plain monospace Markdown with line numbers.
  • Side-by-side preview (⌘\): GitHub-flavored rendering (cmark-gfm) with tables, task lists, footnotes and autolinks, scroll-synced to the editor.

🔎 Find your files

  • Quick Look extension: press Space on any .md file in Finder to see it rendered.
  • Files & Outline sidebar: ⌘P fuzzy-searches every Markdown file in the document's folder, ⇧⌘O jumps to any heading, and + creates a new file next to the current one.

🍎 A proper Mac app

  • Autosave, Versions (browse and revert), and Rename / Move from the title bar. If another app changes the file, Inkdown reloads it.
  • Tabs, Find & Replace (⌘F / ⌥⌘F), spelling, dictation and every standard text shortcut.
  • Export to PDF or HTML, and Print.
  • Light, Dark or System theme, plus text size controls (⌘= / ⌘- / ⌥⌘0).
  • Opens .md, .markdown, .mdown, .mkd, .mkdn and .mdwn.

Good to know

  • If another app (such as Downright) also previews Markdown, choose Inkdown in System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions › Quick Look.
  • To open .md files with Inkdown by default, select one in Finder and choose Get Info › Open with › Inkdown › Change All.
  • Uninstall: quit Inkdown and drag it from Applications to the Trash.
