Keyboard mapping for DE and de_CH not working properly

We noticed some keys in german and swiss german keyboard layout (selected in PROM) are not mapped properly when typing in IRIX.

here a few examples:

DE: according to user sgitcl in the SGUG forums, the umlauts (ä ö ü) work, but "/" and ";" do not work.

de_CH: umlauts do not work (ä ö ü), "" and "ç" do not work. (and also some other keys)

Here is a detailed report of failures on German keyboards:

[A-z,0-9] work with the exception of z and y, which are exchanged (like on an US keyboard)
German Umlauts äöüß work.

Shift-7 should be / but is _
Shift-0 should be = but is `
Shift-ß should be ? but is _
Shift-, should be ; but is Ö
Shift-. should be : but is Ö
+ is '
- is ß
< does not print any character

I used the lightning iris-gui versions from danifunker as of 2026-07-31 for Windows 11 (x64) and macOS (arm64).
Running an IRIX 6.5.22 installation in the IRIS emulator, which worked in the MAME emulator.

wait, how do we set kbd layout in prom? ;-)
does it happen also in command line version? the input handler is somewhat different beetween gui and command line
iris maps (abstracted by winit) keycodes that have not been translated to raw ps2 scancodes, which i think do not differ (much?) between different national keyboards.
this is going to be a mess if we need to do multiple keyboard translations ;(

I'm working on a fix for this. It mostly affects IRIS-gui but there are some minor changes in the core that need to be addressed. I'll follow up with a PR shortly.

Could you re-test your original list (Shift-7 / Shift-0 / Shift-ß / Shift-, / Shift-. , +, -, <, and y/z) plus a few AltGr chars — @ \ { [ ] } ~ | — they should all be correct now.

Two expected quirks: the #/' key (right of Ä) will likely still print /| in the PROM Command Monitor only — please confirm it's correct inside IRIX; and on macOS use the right Option key for AltGr characters, the left one won't work.

Using your pre-release on Windows everything works now on my German keyboard. I also could see the quirk in the Command Monitor.
