Ice 2 v2.16.1

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 28 Sep 04:19

A maintenance update for macOS 27. Hidden sections no longer leave a gap in the menu bar, the Layout editor is now translated, and the sliders in Settings use the standard macOS style.

Fixed

  • On macOS 27, the Hidden and Always-Hidden sections no longer leave an empty gap in the menu bar while their items are hidden, so the spacing stays the same each time you show and hide them.
  • The Layout editor on macOS 27 is now translated. It appeared in English in every other language Ice 2 supports.

Changed

  • The sliders in Settings are now standard macOS sliders, with a tick mark for each step and the value shown next to them.

Ice 2 can hide menu bar items again on macOS 27. macOS 27 rebuilt the menu bar in a way the old approach could no longer follow, so this release adds a backend built for it, along with a new drag-and-drop Layout editor. On macOS 26 and earlier, nothing changes.

Added

  • Hiding works again on macOS 27. macOS 27 changed how the menu bar is put together, and Ice 2's old method could no longer see the individual icons — so nothing hid, and Layout stayed empty. Ice 2 now finds menu bar apps through Accessibility and asks macOS itself to hide them. The Ice icon, your Hidden and Always-Hidden sections, your hotkeys and automatic rehiding all work as before. Grant Ice 2 Accessibility permission if you have not already.
  • A Layout editor built for macOS 27. Drag an app into Visible, Hidden or Always-Hidden, or pick a section from the card's menu; changes save as you make them. One card covers all of an app's menu bar icons, because macOS 27 shows and hides them together. Your saved layout profiles still work: applying one sorts its items into sections and tells you what could not be matched. Assigning a section does not change icon order — for that, Command-drag icons in the menu bar as before.

Fixed

  • The Ice Bar no longer sits on Loading menu bar items… forever when there is nothing to load. It now says that no items were found and offers a Check Again button.

Changed

  • Three things are unavailable on macOS 27: the separate Ice Bar, searching for a single menu bar icon, and temporarily showing one icon. Hidden items now appear directly in the menu bar instead of in a separate bar. Those controls and hotkeys are switched off there, and the settings you saved for them are kept, so they return on macOS 26. Hiding can also take Focus and a few other system extras with it, and section visibility applies to every display at once.

A safety fix in Uninstall, inherited from the shared framework Ice 2 is built on. Menu bar management is unchanged.

Fixed

  • Uninstall now stops if it finds more than one copy of Ice 2 on your Mac. Moving the copy you are running to the Trash was always safe, but your settings, login item and support files are stored under the app's identity rather than its location — so two copies share all of them, and there is no way to tell whose is whose. Uninstalling a spare copy could remove the settings belonging to the copy you actually use. It now stops before removing anything and lists where the copies are, so you can trash the ones you do not want and try again. If you have one copy, which is nearly everyone, nothing changes.

Changed

  • Updated to DragonKit 4.1.1, the shared framework behind Settings, About, What's New and software updates. The fix above comes from it; none of those panes look or behave differently.

A maintenance release: nothing you can see behaves differently. Ice 2 moves to version 4.1.0 of the shared Dragon app framework, and the rest is internal housekeeping.

Changed

  • Ice 2 now builds against version 4.1.0 of the shared DragonKit framework, up from 4.0.0. That framework owns the Settings window, the About and What’s New panes, and the update checker, so keeping the pin current keeps all four in step with the other Dragon apps. The only trace of it anywhere in the app is the framework version About lists under Built with.
  • Internal housekeeping: the files that describe Ice 2’s app bundle and its bundled menu bar helper now sit together in one place in the project, matching the layout every Dragon app uses. Nothing about how the app is built or how it behaves changed.

Ice 2 now speaks seven languages, chosen in Settings ▸ General and applied without a relaunch.

Added

  • English, Español, Français, 日本語, 한국어, 简体中文 and 繁體中文. Pick one under Settings ▸ General, or leave it on Automatic to follow macOS. Everything switches at once — settings, the menu bar menu, alerts and the permissions window — with no relaunch.

Changed

  • The Settings item in the menu bar's right-click menu now reads “Settings…” with the gear icon every Dragon app shows, instead of “Ice 2 Settings…” with no icon.

One fix, finishing what 2.14.6 started: the copyright notice macOS shows for Ice 2 in Finder's Get Info panel now matches the one in Settings ▸ About. Nothing about Ice 2's licensing or its origins changed.

Fixed

  • Finder's Get Info panel now shows the same copyright line as Settings ▸ About. It named two holders, Jordan Baird's for 2025 alongside Teddy Chan's for 2026, while About named one — so the app made two different claims about itself depending on where you looked. Both now read © 2026 Teddy Chan. 2.14.6's release notes said this notice still carried both authors, and that is what has changed here.
  • Nothing about Ice 2's licensing or its origins changed. It is still GPL-3.0, inherited from Ice. Jordan Baird's copyright notice is still in the LICENSE file that ships with the app and still in its bundled Acknowledgements, which is where the licence requires it. He is still credited twice in Settings ▸ About, by the Original project link and the Based on line, and the full licence texts are still published at dragonapp.com/ice-2/licenses/.

A maintenance release: nothing you can see behaves differently.

  • Ice 2 now builds against version 3.4.0 of the shared Dragon app framework, up from 3.3.0. That release adds a way for an app to narrow the framework's language picker to the languages it has actually translated itself into, which Ice 2 has no use for — it ships no translations, so it shows no language picker. The bump keeps Ice 2 current with the shared code rather than drifting behind it.

A maintenance release: nothing you can see behaves differently.

  • Ice 2 now checks for updates at its own home rather than the website, so a problem with the website can no longer hold one up. This finishes the change 2.14.3 began; updates keep arriving exactly as before.

A maintenance release: nothing you can see behaves differently.

  • Ice 2 now publishes the file it checks for updates to its own home as well as the website, so a problem with the website cannot hold up an update. The copy you have installed keeps reading the website until a later version moves it across, so nothing changes for you yet.
