Cineol-X 224 v0.9.8 — Sound accuracy and compact editor
Cineol-X 224 v0.9.8 for macOS Universal and Windows x64.
Sound refinements
- Refined the original 224 v4.4 input/output conversion, control-write
timing at DSP fetch boundaries, and modulation startup/counter retention. - Refined 224XL v8.21 input/output circuit processing, channel capture/write
timing and modulation initialization. These corrections target frequency
balance, decay behavior and response to controls without compensating EQ. - Retained the abrupt, sometimes stepped short-tail ending in Dynamic Decay
observed in the ROM-based reference. No additional tail smoothing is applied. - Faster offline ROM preparation; the realtime audio path remains native C++.
Editor
- Bottom controller captions and values and right-hand Left/Right, Model,
Dynamic Decay, Mod Enhancement and Decay Optimization fields now share one
fixed LED font size. Long captions are abbreviated instead of being shrunk
individually, for example HF BANDWIDTH becomes HF BW. - Full fader names/tooltips and automation metadata remain available. Channel
suffixes, route identifiers, control values and their units are preserved. - The editor opens at 984 x 744, its existing minimum size. Resizing remains
available; a host may restore a previously saved window size.
Compatibility and upgrade
Plugin identifiers, existing parameter IDs/indices and sound-preset/session
formats remain stable. Both engines are included: six original-224 programs
and the 22-program desktop XL preview, with the shared preset bank, eight quick
preset keys, Spillover, continuous Dirt and Low latency.
XL now requires the corrected version-5 prepared cache. Re-import your complete
original 224XL v8.21 ROM set once when upgrading from an older cache, including
v0.9.6's version-4 cache. Click the Model / 224 XL indicator to open ROM setup.
Previous XL caches, the original-224 cache and existing presets are retained.
If the corrected v5 cache has already been prepared locally, no further import
is required. ROM import fixes from the 0.9.6 Fixed rebuild remain included.
Downloads and installation
- macOS Universal: AUv2, VST3 and Standalone, Apple Silicon and Intel,
macOS 11 or later. Copy AU to~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/, VST3 to
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/, and the standalone app to Applications.
Bundles are ad-hoc signed, not notarized; seeINSTALL.txtfor installation. - Windows x64: VST3 and Standalone. Copy the entire
.vst3folder to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\. The standalone executable is optional.
Restart or rescan your DAW after installing. SHA256SUMS.txt covers both ZIPs;
each contains installation instructions, release notes, README and build/source
provenance in BUILD-INFO.json.
ROMs, prepared banks and private recordings are not included. Supply your own
original 224 v4.4 ROM1-ROM5 (five 2,048-byte files) for the six 224 programs,
and the complete 224XL v8.21 eleven-chip set (SBC1-SBC3, three 2,048-byte
files; NVS1-NVS8, eight 4,096-byte files) for XL. Both sets are needed for all
28 programs. Incomplete, modified and unsupported firmware sets are rejected.
Before preparation, unavailable engines remain disabled and audio passes dry.
Validation and current limits
Local private-ROM checks and the full dual-bank plugin regression pass all
28 programs, 618 active fader endpoints, presets/session restoration, page
navigation, mono/stereo, Spillover and block-size independence at 44.1/48/96 kHz.
Audio callback allocation/release counts remain zero. The installed local AU
passes strict system auval validation. Expanded isolated macOS focus checks
pass cross-window focus, dialog/menu ownership and rapid hide/reopen cycles.
Both release platforms build and check empty-cache first use and invalid-ROM
import without private firmware. Packaging checks macOS universal architectures
and signatures, Windows x64 PE binaries, ZIP integrity and SHA-256 checksums.
XL remains a preview. Measurements cover the catalog; eight distinct musical
algorithms have positive user listening feedback, while the remaining fourteen
musical examples await listening review. Checks use the ROM-based software
reference and do not establish complete equivalence to a physical unit.
An intermittent Logic issue where controls stop responding after returning
from another window is not reproduced by the isolated tests and is not claimed
fixed. Full native OS first-click behavior in that Logic scenario still needs
host verification. Daisy hardware behavior and realtime margin are outside this
desktop release validation.
Cineol-X 224 v0.9.6 Fixed — XL ROM import
Cineol-X 224 v0.9.6 for macOS Universal and Windows x64.
Fixed rebuild: XL ROM import
The release archives have been replaced with a corrected 0.9.6 Fixed build.
The plugin version remains 0.9.6; plugin identifiers, parameters, presets and
prepared-bank formats remain compatible.
- ROM setup stays visible when importing XL alongside an already loaded 224,
including progress and failure messages. Close returns to a loaded engine. - Choose ROMs... selects ROM files or ZIPs; Choose folder... selects a
directory. Windows native dialogs no longer receive conflicting selection flags. - Errors report the number of unique supported chips found and name known
unsupported firmware versions, such as 224XL v8.1A. - The XL formatter's 64 KiB scratch image is allocated outside the operator's
fixed-size coroutine frames, avoiding a potential fatal frame-size overflow
during firmware preparation. - Invalid files, malformed ZIPs, repeated attempts and failed XL imports with an
existing 224 cache are checked on both build platforms without private ROMs. - Local full v8.21 preparation, import alongside 224 and cached restart passed.
The prepared 22-program XL bank is byte-identical to the previous bank; this
rebuild does not change the sound. The reported Windows Studio One crash has
not been reproduced directly in that host.
Install the corrected archive over the earlier 0.9.6 build and restart your DAW.
If XL import previously failed, reopen ROM setup and import the complete v8.21
set. The original 224 cache is retained.
This release activates native 224XL dynamics and refines the editor. It includes
all features of v0.9.5: 28 algorithms, the shared preset bank, eight quick preset
keys, Spillover and Low latency.
Changes since v0.9.5
- Dynamic Decay/gating now follows falling input levels and retriggers on
new input in all 19 XL reverb algorithms. Short stop times produce gated tails. - LF STOP DECAY, MID STOP DECAY and REV STOP DLY are active. The delay
holds normal decay before switching to the stop settings. - Decay Optimization adjusts feedback diffusion during XL decay. The existing
Decay Opt button controls the selected original-224 or XL engine. - Both switches and all stop settings belong to sound presets and DAW state.
Plugin identifiers, parameter IDs/indices and preset format 4 are preserved. - Dyn Decay occupies the former Page n/n header cell beside Mod Enh and
Decay Opt. Text sizes, column alignment and spacing remain consistent. Numbered
page buttons provide navigation without changing parameters or clearing tails. - Quick preset keys no longer draw hover, focus or selection underlines. Their
LEDs indicate the recalled preset. - Updated README, first-use/upgrade instructions and actual editor screenshots.
- Public-source and package checks reject private XL banks as well as original
banks and ROMs. Daisy retains the original-224 engine and processing behavior.
Chorus & Echo, Resonant Chords and Multiband Delay have no reverb dynamics in the
original XL firmware, so these switches remain unavailable for those effects.
Spillover retains the previous algorithm's tail on switching; Dynamic Decay
changes decay within the active algorithm. They are separate controls.
Important: upgrading from v0.9.5
The new version-4 XL cache stores dynamics metadata and initial state. Import
your complete original 224XL v8.21 ROM set once again after upgrading. Click
the Model / 224 XL indicator to open ROM import. The previous version-3 XL cache
is preserved. Original 224 v4.4 caches and existing presets remain compatible.
First launch: supply your own ROMs
ROMs and prepared banks are not included in either archive. Import locally using
Choose ROMs... for files/ZIPs or Choose folder... for a directory, then
wait for preparation before selecting an algorithm.
| Programs | Supported firmware | Complete set |
|---|---|---|
| Six original 224 programs | Lexicon 224 v4.4 | ROM1-ROM5, five 2,048-byte files |
| 22 desktop XL programs | Lexicon 224XL v8.21 | Eleven chips: SBC1-SBC3, three 2,048-byte files; NVS1-NVS8, eight 4,096-byte files |
Both sets are needed for all 28 programs. Files are recognized by SHA-256 rather
than filename. Incomplete, modified and other firmware sets are rejected. Files
stay local; subsequent launches use the prepared cache. Before preparation,
audio passes dry and the unavailable engine's algorithms are disabled.
Downloads and installation
- macOS Universal: AUv2, VST3 and Standalone for Apple Silicon and Intel,
macOS 11 or later. Copy AU to~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/, VST3 to
~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/, and the standalone app to Applications.
Bundles are ad-hoc signed; seeINSTALL.txtfor quarantine handling. - Windows x64: VST3 and Standalone. Copy the entire
.vst3folder to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\. The standalone executable is optional.
Restart or rescan the DAW after installing. SHA256SUMS.txt covers both ZIPs;
each contains INSTALL.txt, README and source provenance in BUILD-INFO.json.
Validation
Local private-ROM checks passed 27,117 exact slow/fast controller transitions
across all 19 reverb algorithms and all four switch combinations. Native audio
renders verified dynamics behavior, finite output and no allocations/releases.
Full plugin regression passed all 28 algorithms, 618 active fader endpoints,
presets/session recall, numbered pages and block independence at 44.1/48/96 kHz.
Installed universal Audio Unit validation passed for the dynamics update.
Both platform builds run empty-cache first-use and invalid-ROM import checks and
verify their packaged binaries. macOS packaging verifies arm64/x86_64 architectures and signatures;
Windows packaging verifies x64 PE binaries. ROMs, banks and private fixtures
are never uploaded to CI. These checks do not establish exact physical hardware
timing or replace listening tests in the host.
Fixed rebuild source: e42f6c9. The original v0.9.6 tag is retained; BUILD-INFO.json records this corrected source commit.
Cineol-X 224 v0.9.5 — Spillover, quick presets and 224 XL
Cineol-X 224 v0.9.5 for macOS Universal and Windows x64.
This release includes the changes developed since the last published version,
v0.6.0: native 224 XL preview, a managed preset bank, a redesigned editor,
Spillover, eight quick preset keys and editor focus fixes.
Algorithms and sound controls
- All 22 224 XL v8.21 programs join the six original 224 v4.4 programs.
The algorithm menu selects the engine automatically. XL exposes its own two
to seven parameter pages, including decay, filters, depth/attack, pre-delay,
Chorus, Diffusion, Definition, levels, delays, pan, feedback and Size where used. - Each program chooses an appropriate output pair: A/C for regular reverbs,
A/B for split programs and C/A for Chorus & Echo. Manual XL selection recalls
its factory controls; original-224 controls, Input, Mix and Dirt are retained. - Native XL processing uses graph-specific clocks, rational resampling and
X/XL circuit profiles. Continuous Dirt blends the filtered and unfiltered
paths. XL frequency and decay values without a finite upper bound showINF. - XL dynamic decay/gating, Decay Optimization and associated stop controls
remain disabled. This desktop preview does not claim complete hardware
equivalence. Daisy continues to use the original-224 engine.
Spillover
- Settings adds a Spillover checkbox and a 1–10 second selector on the
same row, defaulting to off and 5 seconds. It works within 224,
within XL and across 224 ↔ XL transitions, including quick-preset recalls. - A new algorithm starts processing input while the previous engine retains
its controls, memory and output routing and fades its remaining wet tail.
A shared dry path avoids doubled or interrupted dry audio. - Only one outgoing tail is retained. Rapid switching retires the oldest tail
over 20 ms before reusing the engine. Processing is bounded to two engines;
CPU demand temporarily increases while both run. - Turning Spillover off fades an existing tail and restores hard switching
for subsequent changes. Spillover and Low latency are instance settings saved
in DAW sessions, independent of sound presets. Older sessions keep Spillover off.
Presets and editor
- Save preset adds a named entry to one shared user bank. Reusing a name
asks for replacement confirmation. Older.cineol224files in the default
preset folder are adopted without deleting the originals. - The themed browser supports alphabetical listing, search by preset/algorithm/
model and multiple algorithm filters. Presets store firmware identity and
all sound controls, including hidden pages. Failed or unavailable recalls
preserve the current sound. Preset names and modified markers survive sessions. - Eight numbered Quick presets keys sit above the lower mounting screws.
Select a browser preset, choose Assign to..., then key 1–8. Assignment
replaces that slot without loading sound; pressing the key recalls it.
Assignments are per instance, persist in sessions and reference current named
bank entries. Empty keys are disabled, and a red LED marks the recalled preset. - Fader caps animate for 320 ms after preset recall without generating extra
parameter events. Direct numbered page selection, scrolling long preset names,
disabled parked faders and the permanent Dirt/Input/Mix columns improve navigation. - The extended photographic metal faceplate and textured keyboard-style keys
replace stretched lower-panel strips and enclosing key frames. Menus, settings
and preset dialogs share a consistent metal/red-display theme. - Popup menus and preset dialogs now belong to their editor. Hidden or unfocused
editors cancel unfinished dialogs, and one instance's dialog cannot lock another
instance's faders. Modal completion clears editor state synchronously, allowing
Save to reopen even when the host delays cleanup. Closing one editor dismisses
only its own menus. This addresses the blocking scenario reported in Logic Pro.
Downloads and installation
macOS Universal contains AUv2, VST3 and Standalone for Apple Silicon and
Intel, targeting macOS 11 or later:
- Copy
AU/Cineol-X 224.componentto~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/. - Copy
VST3/Cineol-X 224.vst3to~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/. - Copy
Standalone/Cineol-X 224.appto Applications if needed.
Bundles are ad-hoc signed without Developer ID notarization. See INSTALL.txt
for installation and quarantine handling.
Windows x64 contains VST3 and Standalone. Copy the entire
VST3/Cineol-X 224.vst3 folder to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\.
The optional standalone application is Standalone/Cineol-X 224.exe.
Restart or rescan your DAW after replacing an installed version. Existing plugin
identifiers and parameter IDs remain stable. Sessions without quick-key metadata
restore eight empty assignments. The original-224 import cache remains compatible;
the XL preview requires its own supported cache/import.
The Program parameter now offers 28 algorithms, so its normalized automation
scale is expanded compared with the earlier six-program version.
First launch: import your ROMs
The build is supplied without ROM files. Import them before using reverb:
| Programs | Model and firmware | Complete ROM set required |
|---|---|---|
| Six original programs | Lexicon 224 v4.4 | ROM1–ROM5, five 2,048-byte files |
| 22 desktop XL programs | Lexicon 224 XL v8.21 | Eleven chip files of 2,048 or 4,096 bytes |
- Open Cineol-X 224 in your DAW or launch the standalone application.
- Click Choose ROMs... in the first-use panel. Select the folder, ZIP or
complete ROM files for the supported version you want to import. - Wait for local preparation to finish, then select an enabled algorithm.
- To add the other model, click the Model / 224 / 224 XL indicator on the
red display and import its separate complete ROM set.
Both sets are needed for all 28 algorithms. A 224 v4.4 set does not enable XL
programs, and an XL v8.21 set does not enable original-224 programs. Filenames
are unimportant: the importer identifies chips by SHA-256. 224X v8.1,
224 XL v8.1A, other versions, incomplete and modified sets are rejected.
Until a required bank is ready, reverb is unavailable and audio passes dry.
After import, later launches use the local cache without selecting ROMs again.
Your files stay on your computer.
ROMs and validation
Supply your own original 224 v4.4 ROM1–ROM5 set for original-224 programs.
The optional desktop XL preview requires its own complete supported 224 XL
v8.21 ROM set. No ROMs, prepared banks, captures or Daisy firmware are shipped.
Private fixtures remain local and are never uploaded to GitHub Actions.
Both platform jobs build and package their binaries and run empty-cache first-use
checks. Packaging verifies macOS universal architectures and strict signatures
before and after ZIP extraction, Windows x64 PE binaries and archive integrity.
Local macOS checks with private banks passed all 28 programs at 44.1/48/96 kHz,
575 active fader endpoints, preset/state compatibility, quick-key assignment,
Spillover reference comparisons for 1/5/10 seconds, rapid switching, dry continuity,
block-size invariance and zero audio-callback allocations/releases. A two-window
GUI regression passed hidden-dialog cancellation, reopening, instance isolation
and fader dragging after preset recall. Installed AU validation passed.
The Logic-specific report was checked with simulated host windows; direct retesting
inside Logic Pro was unavailable because the local Mac was locked. CI does not
perform imported-bank DSP validation on Windows. These checks do not establish
realtime CPU margin or replace listening tests.
SHA256SUMS.txt covers both platform ZIPs. Each archive includes installation
instructions and BUILD-INFO.json with the source commit and dependency pins.
Cineol-X 224 v0.6.0 — Low latency
Cineol-X 224 v0.6.0 for macOS Universal and Windows x64.
What's new
- A gear button in the top-right corner opens Settings. The panel reserves space for future fine tuning.
- Low latency sends the dry signal directly at the project sample rate and reports 0 samples of plugin latency. It works at 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz, including mono input.
- The reverb still passes through its original filters and resamplers; its filter delay and pre-delay remain. The timing between dry and wet changes. At 100% wet, the DSP output is unchanged, but the DAW no longer compensates its delay.
- The setting is saved per plugin instance and defaults to off, including in older sessions. Existing plugin identifiers, parameter IDs and parameter indices are preserved. Low latency is not automatable; some hosts need a transport restart after changing compensation.
- Automatic GitHub Actions builds now produce both platforms. A version tag publishes both archives and their SHA-256 checksums after the builds pass. Manual runs create downloadable build artifacts; an optional publish checkbox on
mainalso creates the version tag and release after both builds pass.
Downloads and installation
macOS Universal includes AUv2, VST3 and Standalone for Apple Silicon and Intel, targeting macOS 11 or later. Extract the ZIP and copy the desired bundles:
AU/Cineol-X 224.componentto~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/VST3/Cineol-X 224.vst3to~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3/Standalone/Cineol-X 224.appto Applications.
macOS bundles are ad-hoc signed without Developer ID notarization. The included INSTALL.txt explains installation and quarantine handling.
Windows x64 includes VST3 and Standalone. Extract the ZIP and copy the complete VST3/Cineol-X 224.vst3 folder to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\. The optional standalone application is in Standalone.
Restart or rescan your DAW. To enable the new mode, open the gear and check Low latency. Audio-interface and host-buffer latency remain independent of this setting.
ROMs and compatibility
Supply your own five original Lexicon 224 v4.4 ROM1-ROM5 files on first use. Import is local. ROMs, prepared banks and firmware are not included in either archive. 224X and 224XL ROMs are not supported. Existing ROM caches remain compatible.
Validation
Both build jobs run first-use checks with an empty cache, including Settings, saved Low latency state, reported latency at 44.1/48/96 kHz, mono/stereo dry pass-through and allocation-free audio processing before ROM import. macOS packaging verifies arm64/x86_64 architectures and strict code signatures, including after ZIP extraction; Windows packaging verifies x64 PE binaries.
Local macOS checks with a private supported bank also verified all six algorithms, exact unchanged 100% wet output, zero-delay dry input, host-rate dry/wet mixing, different block sizes, offline/realtime equivalence, state compatibility and zero callback allocations/releases. Those private fixtures are not uploaded to CI. Full DSP execution on Windows and physical Intel Macs is not claimed by these checks.
SHA256SUMS.txt covers both ZIP files. Each archive includes BUILD-INFO.json with its source commit and dependency pins.
Cineol-X 224 v0.5.1 — macOS Universal & Windows x64

These bundles are ad-hoc signed, without an Apple Developer ID signature or notarization. macOS may block downloaded bundles; the included installation guide explains how to remove quarantine from the installed bundles if you choose to trust this release.
First use
Supply your own five original Lexicon 224 v4.4 ROM1–ROM5 files, each 2,048 bytes. Open the plugin editor, choose Choose ROMs..., and select their folder, ZIP, or the five files. Preparation runs locally; audio passes through dry until it finishes. ROMs and prepared banks are not included in this release.
The cache is stored at ~/Library/Application Support/Cineol-X 224/programs-v44-import-v1.bank224. Other 224 versions, 224X and 224XL ROMs are not supported.
See the project README for controls, behavior and limitations. Plugin identifiers and parameter IDs are unchanged.
Validation
Universal AU, VST3 and standalone bundles passed strict code-signature verification, including after ZIP extraction. Desktop checks passed for the six DSP networks, automation/state, 44.1/48/96 kHz host sample rates, allocation-free audio processing, dry audio before import, import cancellation, ROM import and cache restart. Full runtime checks ran on Apple Silicon; the x86_64 dry-audio/empty-cache check also passed through Rosetta. Execution on Intel hardware has not been verified. This release packages the existing 0.5.1 source without changing sound or controls.
SHA256SUMS.txt contains the checksum of the ZIP archive.
Windows x64 VST3
Cineol-X-224-0.5.1-Windows-x64-VST3.zip contains the Release VST3 build of Cineol-X 224 0.5.1 for Windows x64, built with Visual Studio 2022 and JUCE 8.0.14. The Windows build includes MSVC build and test portability adjustments; DSP source, plugin identifiers and parameter IDs are unchanged.
Extract the ZIP and copy the entire Cineol-X 224.vst3 folder to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3\, then restart or rescan your DAW. On first use, choose your own original Lexicon 224 v4.4 ROM1–ROM5 files as described above. No ROMs or prepared banks are included.
The first-use/empty-cache check passed on Windows, including dry audio, processor state, the ROM setup interface and zero audio-processing allocations or releases. Full ROM import, wet DSP and DAW-host validation have not been run for this Windows build. The adjacent .zip.sha256 file contains its SHA-256 checksum; SHA256SUMS.txt applies to the macOS archive.
