- How Jekyll works: app life-cycle
- GitHub Pages run Jekyll in safe mode (no plugins except for a few), which means jekyll-compass is out (for now). The workaround is to pre-compile your CSS and commit your static results, as seen on hop.ie (source).
On Windows, your best bet is the unofficial Windows guide posted on Jekyll's main site. PortableJekyll works, but updates are slower.
Below you can see how I attempted to run Jekyll on Cygwin.
You want to use Jekyll with Pages. You want to test things out on Windows/Cygwin. You like a challenge.
Install Ruby:
apt-cyg install ruby
Install bundler:
apt-cyg install ruby-bundler # instead of 'gem install bundler'
Optional: When you use gem install, the gems could end up in an unusual place, ~/bin. You need to move it to /bin before you can use it anywhere.
install ~/bin/<gem-name> /bin
Now to install Jekyll. Set up a Gemfile in your project and run:
bundle install
If that fails, and it will, make sure you have all the dependencies:
apt-cyg install make
apt-cyg install gcc-core
apt-cyg install libcrypt-devel
apt-cyg install libffi-devel
apt-cyg install zlib-devel
apt-cyg install libiconv-devel
apt-cyg install patch
OK NONE OF THIS WORKS SUCH A WASTE OF TIME I WILL START MY LINUX BOX
