Far 0.4.0 — First public release
Far’s first public release: a quiet, native menu bar companion for screen breaks.
Download and install
Download Far-0.4.0-macOS-universal.zip below. It supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 13 or later.
- Unzip the download and move Far.app to Applications.
- Open Far and look for the Soft pause icon in your menu bar. There is no Dock icon.
- Adjust your timings or enable Launch at login in Settings.
This release is ad-hoc signed and not notarized by Apple. macOS may block the first launch. If you trust this download, after attempting to open it go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. See Apple’s instructions. Building from source is also supported.
What’s included
- Configurable look-away and step-away breaks, with a 15-second warning by default.
- Centered rest prompts and dimming across displays, while the desktop stays usable.
- Separate Postpone and Skip actions, and reminders that pause during likely meetings.
- Credit for natural breaks during lock, sleep, screen saver, or display-off time.
- Local daily totals, six completion sounds, launch at login, and light/dark appearances.
- Original Soft pause artwork, native macOS materials, and accessibility preferences.
- No account, analytics, subscription, or network service.
Automatic meeting detection is best effort; use manual Meeting mode when needed. See the behavior guide for precise timing and privacy details.
Verification and known limits
The local test suite passed 45 tests, with four opt-in checks skipped and zero failures. Both physical desktop checks were separately requested and remained skipped because the test session has no native display connection. Live focus, accessibility, multi-display behavior, and glass rendering need broader device testing. Full details are in VALIDATION.md.
The universal archive was built with Xcode 16.4; both architecture slices and the extracted app’s ad-hoc signature were verified. There is no automatic updater yet: quit Far and replace the app to update.
