Release Notes

This is a MINOR release that

  • adds SDH-100 host support with a host-aware System Menu including Memory Map and Boot Log views
  • adds Save Cfg / Restore Cfg for the complete S-132 configuration in NVRAM (Initial Device, D+7AIO, Dazzler, VIO)
  • adds an alternate ORANGE palette to the Dazzler (DZLR:), cycled with PgUp and persisted in NVRAM, alongside a brighter primary-colour palette
  • adds hardware flow control to LPT: pass-through on the D+7AIO so the host pauses while the parallel-port printer is busy
  • shows >-prefixed remote disk images in the Library (LIB:) listing
  • routes keyboard input from the Dazzler screen to the most recently active TTY: or VIO:
  • adds Ctrl-Alt-Space as an alternate SETUP chord for USB keyboards without SYSRQ / PrtScr
  • smooths System-Menu list rendering under arrow-key navigation
  • updates the on-board UHC (USB host controller) firmware with USB hub support

Added SDH-100 host support — dynamic System Menu:

The S-132 System Menu now adapts to the host firmware it is connected to. When the connected host reports itself as an SDH-100:

  • the title bar shows the SDH-100 firmware version and CPU type ([MPU-A] or [ZPU]) instead of the IMSAI/Z-1 power/run/wait indicators
  • two new entries appear under the System sub-menu:
    • Memory Map — dumps the SDH-100 memory map sent by the host
    • Boot Log — dumps the SDH-100 boot log sent by the host
  • non SDH-100 entries (Guest, Host, Tasks, System config, the CP-A sub-menu) are hidden
  • IMSAI and Cromemco Z-1 hosts continue to see the existing full System Menu unchanged

The host firmware version (when reported) is also displayed in the System Menu title for all hosts.

NOTE: SDH-100 host support is only relevant when using the S-132 with the SDH-100 (Software Defined Hardware) for the S-100 bus .

Added S-132 configuration save / restore:

  • added to SYSTEM MENU (ctrl-alt-F6)
    • S-132 >
      • First Dev > — radio group selecting which device (TTY:, VIO:, Dazzler) is selected at power-on
      • Save Cfg — saves the full S-132 configuration to NVRAM
      • Restore Cfg — restores the full S-132 configuration from NVRAM
  • The saved configuration includes:
    • Initial Device (TTY: / VIO: / Dazzler)
    • D+7AIO: Mode, Centre, Sample rate, Samples, Channels, ADC bias, DAC A, DAC B, DAC Mode, DAC bias
    • Dazzler: raster size, colour palette
    • VIO: foreground colour, scan style
  • The save bell-tone and restore behaviour mirror the existing VT132 SETUP Save / Recall keys

Added Dazzler (DZLR:) alternate ORANGE palette:

  • pressing PgUp while the Dazzler is the active device cycles between two colour palettes:
    • the standard colour palette (now with brighter primary Red and Blue — equal in intensity to the existing Green)
    • an alternate palette where Dark Yellow is replaced with ORANGE
  • the active palette is included in the Save Cfg state, so the selection persists across reboots
  • the monochrome (grey) palette is unchanged
  • NOTE: The Red/Blue brightness change is a visible improvement to existing programs — the dim Red and Blue are now full-intensity.

Keyboard from the Dazzler screen routes to the last active device:

  • previously the Dazzler ignored keyboard input from the keyboard
  • the Dazzler now forwards keystrokes (ASCII 0..127) to the device that was last selected as the active TTY: (or to VIO: if VIO: was last)
  • this lets you flip to the Dazzler for graphics output without losing keyboard access to the underlying console

Added LPT: pass-through hardware flow control:

  • when the D+7AIO is configured in LPT: Pass-through mode, incoming bytes from the host are now buffered and only released to the parallel-port printer when the printer asserts _ACK high and BUSY low
  • the S-132 signals back to the host on the D+7AIO channel:
    • 0xAA (WAIT) — buffer is more than half full, host should pause
    • 0x55 (RESUME) — buffer has drained, host may resume sending
    • 0xBB (OVERFLOW) — buffer was already full when a byte arrived
  • this lets the host stream long print jobs through the parallel port without dropping bytes under burst load

S-132 Library (LIB:) — remote disk images visible:

  • disk images whose name begins with > (used by the host emulator to indicate a disk image served from a remote/network source) are now included in the Library listing alongside local .dsk images

Added Ctrl-Alt-Space as alternate SETUP:

  • many modern USB keyboards omit the SYSRQ / PrtScr key that invokes the SETUP menu
  • holding Ctrl + Alt and pressing Space now invokes SETUP as an alternate chord
  • the original bindings continue to work unchanged

Smoother System-Menu navigation:

  • the System Menu and its lists (Library, Memory Map, Boot Log, Environment, Tasks, Files, Disks) no longer flicker on every arrow keypress
  • moving the highlight cursor within a list now repaints only the rows that change — the surrounding frame and unchanged rows are left alone
  • most visible on long lists such as Library and Boot Log

Updated USB host controller (UHC) firmware to V2.1.1:

The USB host controller firmware (UHC) is bumped from V2.0.0 to V2.1.1. Notable user-facing changes:

  • USB hub support — keyboards plugged in behind a USB hub now enumerate and work. Previously only keyboards plugged directly into the S-132's USB port were recognised. This also enables keyboards with an embedded hub. Only the first keyboard found is enabled.
  • Hot-plug through a hub — unplugging and re-plugging a keyboard while it is connected via a hub is also detected.
  • Low-speed keyboards behind a full-speed hub — supports a low-speed keyboard when plugged in through an FS hub (e.g. the Raspberry Pi Wired Keyboard.)
  • Boot-protocol keyboard filter — multi-interface USB devices (e.g. a keyboard with built-in trackpoint, or a combined keyboard/mouse receiver) now only have their boot-protocol keyboard interface attached; other HID interfaces on the same device are cleanly ignored instead of being claimed and producing junk input.

FIRMWARE

There is only 1 (one) file required to update the firmware, either

update.bin ~277KB - used with the IMSAI8080esp and Cromemco Z-1 emulator kits
S-132.bin ~520KB - used with the SDH-100 kit

Instructions for updating the firmware on an existing system are included in the Firmware Update Guide

If you need to flash a new ESP32-WROVER module, use the procedure described at S-132 Firmware Install & Console Logs

Known Issues

  1. There is a limit of 512 disk images that can be displayed in the Library (LIB:) or when selecting a disk image to be mounted. When this limit is reached the last entry in the list of disk images will show <Limit Reached>. (Carried over from V1.7.0 — unchanged in this release.)
