Release Notes

A font release. System fonts are now found on Linux, where named fonts and the automatic Unicode body font silently fell back to the ASCII-only built-in Helvetica, and external fonts gain real weights beyond bold. One advisory is closed.

Thanks to Sanne Ladage (@sladage), first-time contributor, for the font lookup and font weight work in #122.

  • System fonts are found on Linux: lookup only matched file names spelled exactly like the requested name and never descended into the per-package folders distributions use, so on Debian, Fedora, and Arch --default-font "DejaVu Sans", "Noto Sans", or "Liberation Serif" all rendered in built-in Helvetica, and so did documents with no font configured, which should have picked a Unicode system font automatically. Names now match ignoring case, spaces, hyphens, and underscores (Noto Sans finds NotoSans-Regular.ttf), and font directories are searched recursively. Thanks to Sanne Ladage.
  • Per-user font directories are searched: $XDG_DATA_HOME/fonts (default ~/.local/share/fonts) and ~/.fonts on Linux, ~/Library/Fonts on macOS, and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts on Windows. The new fonts::font_search_dirs() returns the full list of roots.
  • Font weights beyond bold: font_weight accepts thin, extra-light, light, regular, medium, semibold, extra-bold, and black (with common aliases) alongside normal, bold, and 100..900. With an external font, each weight selects the matching static file next to the configured one, such as Foo-Light.ttf or Foo-SemiBoldItalic.ttf, falling back to the closest available weight. Weights apply to every configurable block, page furniture, and inline code. Built-in PDF fonts still offer only regular and bold. See docs/configuration.md. Thanks to Sanne Ladage.
  • Weights stay relative to the configured face: the configured file is always the normal weight, so **bold** in Arial Black stays black instead of switching to the lighter Arial Bold, and a Lato-Light body now gets Lato-Bold for bold and Lato-LightItalic for italics. Sibling files are also discovered for names that were previously missed, such as Foo-Regular.ttf finding Foo-Bold.ttf.
  • Inline code follows its surroundings: code in a heading is consistently bold, where it was previously bold only when another part of the document happened to load the bold code face, and code inside an italic blockquote is italic. [code_inline] font_weight and font_style are now applied.
  • Advisory closed: RUSTSEC-2026-0285 (rustls, TLS 1.3 handshake messages accepted across encryption levels), reachable only with the fetch feature. cargo audit reports zero vulnerabilities.
