A 404 whose path, user agent or referer was longer than 255 characters came back to the visitor as a 500: the three columns of the error url report are written to verbatim, and each was a VARCHAR(255). The overflow raised SQLSTATE 22001 inside the kernel exception listener.

• the columns are widened — url_source and referer to 1024, user_agent to 512 — by ALTER (Config/update/3.0.5.sql), so the recorded history is kept;
• the listener cuts each value to the width of its column before writing (mb_strcut, never splitting a multibyte character);
• a PropelException raised while recording is logged instead of escaping: this report is a side effect of the 404 and must not change the response.

Upgrading plays the update SQL through module:refresh.
