• TwigParser::assign() silently dropped any variable assigned once the Twig environment had rendered something in the same request (globals are frozen after the first render). The second email sent while handling a request — or a hook rendered mid-page — was rendered with null variables, e.g. format_money(null) on an order confirmation. Assigned variables are now kept by the parser and merged into the context of every render() / renderString(), explicit render parameters winning over them. assign() also accepts an array, as ParserInterface allows.
