Select text in a PDF, tap Find meaning, and Google results open in a panel inside the reader. Close it and your scroll position is exactly where you left it.

No AI, no API keys, no backend, no account, no telemetry.

The first published release, and the first to cover three platforms with one version number.

New: Android

  • Touch text selection with drag handles and a magnifier
  • A draggable bottom-sheet search panel on the system WebView — nothing like Chromium is bundled, so the APK is ~25 MB against the desktop bundle's ~326 MB
  • Open PDFs from the Android picker or by sharing to the app (VIEW / SEND intents)
  • Layered system back, edge-to-edge, state restored after the OS kills the app
  • INTERNET is the only permission — no storage permissions at all

Ubuntu and Windows

Unchanged in behaviour. The Android work touched no file under linux/, windows/ or packaging/. Both are rebuilt from this tag, so the binaries are new even though the behaviour is not.

Verified against the real browser engines: Linux 10/10, Windows 11/11, Android 11/11 conformance.

Install

Ubuntu (26.04; Depends are derived from the build machine's libraries)

sudo apt install ./dndreader_0.3.0-1_amd64.deb

Windows 10 1809+ — run DNDReader-0.3.0-setup-x64.exe. Unsigned, so SmartScreen will warn.

Android 8.0+ — take DNDReader-0.3.0-arm64-v8a.apk for any phone from roughly 2017 on. Use armeabi-v7a only for older 32-bit devices, x86_64 only for emulators. You will need to allow installing from unknown sources.

All APKs are signed with the release key, certificate SHA-256:

Known limitations

  • Android holds a private copy of each document. Edits to the original will not appear until you open or share it again.
  • Memory on Android is higher than budgeted — about 517 MB with a 240-page document open and the search panel alive, against a 300 MB target. Fine on the test device; reported rather than quietly re-baselined.
  • You cannot sign in to Google in the panel — Google blocks sign-in in embedded webviews. Results are signed-out.
  • Text-based PDFs only. No OCR.
  • Not verified: TalkBack, Bluetooth keyboard/mouse/stylus, split screen, Android 13+ on physical hardware, a missing or very old system WebView. See docs/android-owner-test.md.
  • Whether Google's terms permit loading Search inside a third-party app panel is not established — see docs/implementation-plan.md §9.8.
