EMX Clips 1.9.57
EMX Clips 1.9.57
Fixes
- Clips no longer get stuck recording the lock screen. If Clips started while Windows was locked (for example right after you sign in), it could pick the lock screen as the "game" window to record, and kept recording that frozen picture after you unlocked, for hours. Windows' own screens (lock screen, Start menu, search, taskbar, desktop) are never treated as games now.
- Screen capture follows what is in front. When Clips records a fullscreen game's window directly (its anti-freeze mode) and you switch to another window, minimize the game, or the screen locks, Clips goes back to recording your screen within half a second instead of showing the game frozen.

In-game capture runs in a separate program, GameCapture\emx-capture-engine.exe, licensed under GPL-2.0-or-later and built on OBS Studio 32.2.2. Its source is published at https://github.com/tjcorp420/emx-capture-engine. EMX Clips itself remains proprietary.

Fixes
- Trimming no longer freezes the editor. Saving a trim (or a TikTok/social export) used to pause replay, stop the recorder, render, and then restart recording. That took several seconds, froze the preview, threw away your replay buffer, and detached in-game capture from Fortnite. Replay now keeps recording while you edit, like Medal and ShadowPlay do, and the export runs at lower priority so it never competes with your game.
Also included
- The in-game capture engine keeps the previous session's log (
game-capture-engine.previous.log) so problems can be diagnosed after a restart.

Fixes
- Clipping another window while Fortnite is open now records what is on screen. If you switched to a browser game (or anything else) with Fortnite still open, clips showed Fortnite standing still. In-game capture now follows the window in front: Fortnite is recorded through the game hook while you play it, and the screen plus your desktop audio are recorded the moment another window is in front, all in the same replay, with no gap.
- Clips explains when in-game capture can't attach. Some apps (for example Ollama, or an old OBS install) keep an older copy of the OBS game hook loaded, which stops Fortnite from taking the current one. Clips now keeps the shared hook up to date before your game starts, and if the hook still can't attach it says which app is blocking it and what to do, instead of silently recording the screen. No administrator rights needed.

Smooth Fortnite clips with in-game capture
- Fortnite is now recorded from inside the game, the same way OBS Game Capture and Outplayed do it, using OBS Studio's official signed game-capture hook (accepted by Easy Anti-Cheat). Frames are copied as Fortnite draws them, so the graphics-driver screen-capture stalls that froze clips for 1-2 seconds at a time can no longer reach your clips.
- It switches on automatically when Fortnite is in front and back to normal capture when Fortnite closes. Your hotkey, library, toasts and settings work exactly as before. No administrator rights, nothing to configure. Turn it off in Settings with "In-game capture for Fortnite" if you ever need to.
- Clips keep three audio tracks: game + microphone mix, game only, and microphone only (Keyboard + Voice profile keeps keyboard sound crisp).
- The capture engine always detaches from the game cleanly when Clips closes or updates.
Also included
- Capture engine stall telemetry, Windows Graphics Capture and game-window fallbacks, and the holographic interface from 1.9.50.

Capture engine
- New built-in Windows Graphics Capture source inside the native engine. If Desktop Duplication stops receiving the game's frames twice within 20 seconds (the 1-2 second freezes during GPU-heavy matches), the session switches to Windows Graphics Capture automatically without losing the replay buffer. This follows Sunshine and Magpie guidance for NVIDIA + hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling + high video-memory use.
- The engine records video-memory usage and budget at start and at every freeze, and reads the real (active) HAGS state from the graphics driver.
- No administrator rights are needed. Realtime GPU priority is used automatically only when Windows allows it and HAGS is truly off.
- NVENC multipass is explicitly disabled to leave more GPU time under load.
Holographic interface
- Custom holographic title bar with live replay status, replacing the standard Windows caption (Snap layouts, resize and maximize still work).
- New default "EMX Hologram" theme and "EMX Hologram HUD" preset: cyan light with a magenta counter-light and high-contrast text. Existing themes and your custom look are unchanged; pick the new preset in Background Studio.
- Glowing replay status and subtle scanline glass on every panel, drawn once so they cost no per-frame GPU time.
EMX Clips 1.9.49
EMX Clips 1.9.49
- Capture priority now follows proven open-source game-capture practice (Sunshine, Looking Glass). When Windows "Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling" (HAGS) is off and EMX Clips runs as administrator, the native capture engine uses realtime GPU priority, so a game running the GPU at 100% can no longer starve capture into frozen frames. Otherwise it uses high priority as before.
- When HAGS is on, Clips writes a clear warning to its log at arm time. With HAGS on, Windows screen capture of any kind (Desktop Duplication and Windows Graphics Capture) can freeze for seconds under full GPU load.
For the smoothest Fortnite clips: turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings), restart the PC, then run EMX Clips as administrator.
EMX Clips 1.9.48
EMX Clips 1.9.48
- Fixes the freeze frames during Fortnite matches. Measured on a real match with PresentMon: Fortnite runs in "Hardware: Independent Flip", where Windows sends the game straight to the monitor and skips the desktop that every screen-capture method records, so clips froze for seconds at a time while the game looked smooth. The anti-freeze helper is now a plain Windows layered window, the exact type that moved Fortnite to "Composed: Flip" in that measurement. The 1.9.46 helper used a different window type that did not.
- Includes the 1.9.47 capture priority and updater fixes.
Turn "Prevent fullscreen freeze frames" off in Settings if you prefer the lowest possible display latency over clip smoothness.
EMX Clips 1.9.47
EMX Clips 1.9.47
- Fixes freeze frames that started once a Fortnite match loaded (about 1.5 seconds frozen every few seconds while the game stayed smooth). A GPU-heavy game running at 200+ FPS with NVIDIA Reflex Boost kept Clips' capture work waiting behind it. The native capture engine now runs its capture and encoder threads at high priority and asks Windows for high GPU scheduling priority, the same approach other capture apps use.
- In-app updates no longer silently fail. Previously the old version could be relaunched while the installer was still running, and the installer then quietly rolled back. Clips now waits for the installer to finish, writes an install log, and tells you if the version did not change after restarting.
Automated tests pass. Please save a few clips during a Fortnite match after updating.
EMX Clips 1.9.46
EMX Clips 1.9.46
- Fixes the repeating freeze frames in fullscreen games (about 1.6 seconds frozen every few seconds while the game itself looked smooth). While replay is armed and a fullscreen game is in front, EMX Clips keeps a 1-pixel, invisible, click-through helper window on top so Windows keeps sending every game frame to screen capture instead of bypassing it. It turns off automatically outside fullscreen apps. You can switch it off in Settings with "Prevent fullscreen freeze frames"; it may add about one frame of display latency while replay is armed.
- The backup freeze recovery no longer gives up. In 1.9.45 it waited up to 60 seconds between attempts, so a freeze that repeats every few seconds was only recovered once. It now retries at most every 3 seconds.
Automated unit, Windows and native-policy tests pass. Please save a few Fortnite clips after updating and check them for freezes.

EMX Clips 1.9.45
- Browser and other game audio is recorded again while a supported game is open in the background. Game-only audio now follows only the game you are actually playing, and apps such as VS Code or Codex are no longer mistaken for Call of Duty. When the game used for game-only audio closes, Clips switches back to system audio automatically instead of recording silence.
- Game audio and microphone (voice, keyboard and mouse) stay in sync for long armed sessions. Each source is now kept within about 40 ms of real time in both directions; previously a slightly fast device clock could push audio later the longer replay stayed armed.
- Freeze-frame protection: when a game that was presenting at full speed suddenly stops reaching Windows screen capture for 300 ms or more, the native capture engine rebuilds its Desktop Duplication link in place without losing the replay buffer. Stalls are also written to the log.
- Smoother motion on 240 Hz displays: native capture records an evenly paced 120 FPS (new Creator 120 profile) instead of 100 FPS, which alternated 2- and 3-refresh steps and caused visible judder.
- The EMX Clips window no longer keeps animating or playing its background video while it is hidden, minimized or covered by a game.
- PCs without an NVIDIA GPU can now record: Clips picks a working encoder in the order NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, Windows Media Foundation, then software.
Automated unit, Windows and native-policy tests pass. These changes have not yet been checked in a real game session, and AMD/Intel encoding has not been tested on AMD or Intel hardware. Please report any freeze, sync or recording problems with a saved clip.
