Please update

1.4 and earlier accepted requests from any website. A page you visited could quietly tell SNAG to download something to your disk; it could not read the result, but the file still landed. 1.5 rejects anything that does not come from SNAG itself or the extension. If you run the Windows build, update.

Windows: it lives in the tray now

No console window any more. SNAG sits next to the clock while it runs. Right-click the icon to reopen it, open or change the download folder, or quit. Your folder choice is remembered.

The quit prompt also tells you the truth now: stopping mid-download leaves partly downloaded files behind that cannot be played, and you will want to delete them.

The browser extension

Optional, and SNAG works fine without it. It adds a SNAG button to YouTube, TikTok, X, Instagram, Vimeo, Twitch, SoundCloud and Reddit so you can start a download without copying the link, and a right-click menu entry for any video link.

Unzip SNAG-extension-1.1.zip somewhere permanent, open chrome://extensions or edge://extensions, turn on Developer mode, click Load unpacked and pick the folder. It only talks to SNAG on your own machine, and only on those sites. It is not on the Chrome Web Store, for the same reason SNAG is not on Google Play.

Android

No functional changes. Rebuilt at 1.5 so both downloads carry the same version, and signed with the same key as every release so far, so it installs over your current copy.

The exe is unsigned, so SmartScreen warns on first launch: More info, then Run anyway.

Build either one yourself from source with ./gradlew assembleRelease or python tools/build_exe.py.

SNAG now runs on a PC as well as a phone. One release, both platforms, same program inside.

New: the Windows build

A single exe with Python, yt-dlp and FFmpeg inside it. Download it, run it, and the same web UI opens at http://localhost:8765. Nothing to install, no Python, no admin rights, and HD merging and MP3 extraction work out of the box.

Keep the console window open while a download runs. Closing it, or pressing Ctrl+C, stops SNAG.

SmartScreen warns the first time, because the exe is not signed with a paid certificate. Choose More info, then Run anyway, or check the hash below first. Windows 8.1 works too; Windows 7 does not, because Python dropped it.

Unlike the APK, the desktop build can read cookies straight from your browser, so private and age-restricted videos work without exporting a cookies.txt.

Android

Not on Google Play and never will be: YouTube developer policy bars apps that download videos for offline play. Build either one yourself from source with ./gradlew assembleRelease or python tools/build_exe.py.
