Tuner mod v2

@tntexplosivesltd tntexplosivesltd released this 13 Aug 08:00

Same tuner mod as v1, with one fix. Use this one.

What changed

v1 changed a version label inside the firmware file, from V180 to V18M, so that a patched unit would show as modified on its About screen.

That label turns out not to be cosmetic. The updater reads it out of the image and sends it to the pedal before it sends any firmware data at all. Units with newer boot software refuse an update when that label has been changed, and they refuse it silently, so the editor shows no error and the pedal is left sitting on the update screen.

v2 leaves the label alone. Nothing else about the mod has changed.

Confirmed

Six people who could not flash v1 have now flashed v2 successfully. Four of them told us their boot version: one on Boot V0.0.5 and three on Boot V0.0.6, which is exactly the range that was failing. One of those is the unit whose USB captures identified the problem in the first place, so for that unit we have the failure captured, the fix applied, and the flash completed.

Thank you to everyone who reported this, answered questions, and retested. The USB captures in particular are what cracked it, and they were not a small thing to ask for.

What is still open is only the detail of why the pedal refuses: we have not read the newer boot software, so we know the changed label causes the failure but not what test it fails. That does not affect you. The fix is the same either way.

If v2 still does not work for you

The Windows 11 driver problem is real and separate, and it stops Valeton's own firmware from loading too. If Valeton's unmodified file will not load either, that is what you are hitting, not this. See the README.

If Valeton's own firmware loads fine and only the patched file fails, please open an issue. That would be something we have not seen yet, and we would want to look at it.

What you will see on the About screen

The version now reads V1.8.0, the same as stock, where v1 made it read V1.8.M. You can still tell a patched unit apart, because the copyright line on that same screen reads "Valeton GP-200 (modified)" rather than Valeton's usual notice.

Using it

Download GP-200-patcher-tuner.html and open it directly in your browser. No install, no server, works offline. Point it at your own stock GP-200 firmware image to verify and patch it.

Your patched file should come out named GP-200_V1.8.0_414aa9a2.bin. If it ends in f5afac84, that is the v1 build.

⚠️ Superseded. Please use Tuner mod v2 instead.

This release builds a file that units with newer boot software refuse to flash, and they refuse it without showing any error at all. The editor looks normal and the pedal is left sitting on the update screen.

To check whether this affects you, hold BACK and SAVE together while powering the unit up to reach the factory QC screen, and read the line marked Boot:. V0.0.5 or newer means you need v2.

v2 is the same mod with that one problem fixed, and it has now been confirmed working by six people who could not flash this build, on units reporting Boot V0.0.5 and V0.0.6.

Tightened tuner deadband (5c -> 1.5c), footswitch-LED tuner status, and a strobe display. Covered in "The Front Panel, and a Tuner That Actually Locks" on the blog.
