@tomaszstaniak tomaszstaniak released this 24 Sep 22:26

Test release (prerelease). First public build of the OpenLoco port for AROS One x86_64 (ABIv11). Read the limitations below before using it with saves you care about.

OpenLoco is an open-source re-implementation of Chris Sawyer's Locomotion. This is an independent port, not made or endorsed by the OpenLoco project. The Locomotion game data is not included - you need your own copy of the original game.

Install and run

  1. Extract the archive somewhere writable (lha x openloco.x86_64-aros-v11.lha); it creates the drawer OpenLoco.
  2. Make your Locomotion files reachable at the path in OpenLoco/openloco.yml (default Locodata:Locomotion), or edit it.
  3. From a Shell: cd into the drawer and run execute Run-OpenLoco.

Always start through Run-OpenLoco: it sets a 1 MB stack (the default 40 KB Shell stack crashes the game while it draws its first screen) and says clearly if it is run from the wrong drawer or if the program or data/ is missing. For silence, see "No sound?" in the included README.md (AHI Unit 0 may be set to VOID).

Tested

On AROS One 1.3 x86_64 (ABIv11) under QEMU, using this archive exactly: extracted with C:lha on a fresh boot, started via Run-OpenLoco from a Shell with the default stack, title menu, a scenario map, save under a new name, clean exit from the game menu, orderly shutdown, reboot, and the save loaded again. Details: docs/evidence/release-rc1/RESULTS.md.

Limitations

  • Supported only on AROS One x86_64 (ABIv11). Not 32-bit AROS, not mainline ABI v1.
  • Saving over an existing file on FAT32: on the FAT32 volume used for testing, the AROS FAT handler has lost data when rewriting an existing file and the volume was damaged twice. The port writes saves more safely, but the problem is not solved. Save under new names, keep copies of important saves, and shut AROS down properly (Sys:C/Shutdown).
  • Second start in one boot: early in development, starting the game a second time in the same boot froze the whole machine (four times on 2026-09-17/18). It has not been reproduced since, but the cause was never found - it is not known to be fixed. Reboot between sessions to be safe.
  • Sound: music has been heard playing; sound effects have not been checked.
  • Performance has not been characterised beyond one measurement (40 fps cap held at 640x480 on a small map, emulated machine). Software renderer.
  • Wanderer crashed once on a test machine while the game sat idle; cause unknown. One unfreed signal is reported on exit.
