Codex Thinking Knob by ToolboxMD gives Astra a bounded tool to request low, medium, high, or max reasoning effort during an active Codex App Server turn. It is independently installable and has no npm runtime dependencies.

Compatibility and activation

  • Requires Node.js 22+ and a configurable stdio App Server client. Codex 0.153.4 is tested on macOS and Linux.
  • Launch the client through the wrapper with --adaptive; custom Codex commands must include --enable step_model_switching.
  • Start a fresh, explicitly selected gpt-6-astra task and leave turn-level effort unset for adaptive control.
  • Experimental App Server interfaces may change. Installation alone does not activate the wrapper in an unmodified Codex desktop app, and it cannot attach to an existing task.

Installation

Download the archive and SHA256SUMS below, verify the checksum, and follow the versioned installation guide. The archive contains only Thinking Knob. Native Marketplace installation is independently selected as codex-thinking-knob@toolboxmd in ToolboxMD Marketplace 1.3.0.

Evidence

The full 18-test native/package gate and independent Luna max review passed. The native deterministic fixture observed low → high → low → low, including an unchanged next-turn default. A separate authenticated Astra capability check reviewed actual release claims and observed low → high → low in completed provider requests. The release evidence asset records the exact commit, artifact digest, runtime, and guided task result.

The real check demonstrates upward and downward control while completing useful work. It does not measure optimal autonomous effort selection or token, cost, latency, or quality improvements. applied means native acceptance, and the wrapper accurately reports executionVerified: false; request observation supplies separate execution evidence for verification.

Explicit client effort and model choices remain authoritative. Other models, tasks, credentials, global instructions, and other ToolboxMD modules are outside this wrapper's install footprint.

Public Marketplace verification

A fresh isolated Codex profile installed only codex-thinking-knob@toolboxmd through the public GitHub Marketplace. All 12 package files matched the immutable archive. Real Astra completed the guided source review through that installed launcher with low → high → low requests. Native removal left no installed plugin entry or module cache. marketplace-install-evidence.json records this separate public-path proof.
