Cortex 0.2.0 (build 23) — M8 portable memory + onboarding fixes

Signed portable memory protocol v2 with cross-agent OpenClaw recall, verifier boundary hardening, and onboarding completion fixes (backup decision + ChatGPT/Claude export drag-import).

Release gate: MemoryTruth against the shipped bundle — all 10 categories 1.0 across seeds 7/21/42/99/1234 (BUNDLE_ALL_FLOORS_HELD).

Cortex 0.2.0 (build 17) — Learning HUD fixes

Fixes the bottom "Building your memory" HUD reported twice:

• Progress no longer spills past the bar. The indeterminate sweep segment slides in from the left and out to the right; it's now clipped to the bar so it can't run past the pill's rounded end (build 15 only clipped the determinate fill, not the indeterminate sweep).
• Only shows when actually building memory. The HUD now keys off real memory work (an active sync/import/background job), not the generic 'app is busy' flag — so it won't pop up for searches, saves, or stat refreshes.
• Auto-dismisses. An indeterminate bar shows at most ~5s, and a determinate bar that stops advancing dismisses after a short stall — it can no longer become a permanent bar. A live, advancing sync still shows for its full duration.

Carries builds 15 (App Store compliance) + 16 (menu-bar/notch/ripple/onboarding UI pass).

Cortex 0.2.0 (build 16) — UI/animation formatting pass

Fixes the reported bottom learning-HUD progress bar (it spilled past the pill's rounded corners) plus a full audit of every animated/formatted surface:

• HUD: progress track + subtitle inset past the capsule radius; fill clamped to the track.
• Menu-bar icon: the learned/captured sparkle no longer strobes (played its pop once now, then holds) and no longer jumps ~10% larger when it plays.
• Notch pill: same corner-spill fix as the HUD.
• Ripple: fully-expanded ring no longer clipped, and no longer sits partly behind the Dock.
• Edge-glow: breathe animation stopped deterministically (no lingering repeat).
• Spotlight panel: placeholder no longer jumps 1pt when typing starts.
• Onboarding: status pill/border use the wax-red brand accent.

Carries the build-15 App Store compliance work (Guidelines 2.5.1 / 2.5.2 / 2.1a / 4).

Cortex 0.2.0 (build 15) — App Store compliance

Build 15 addresses all four App Store Review rejection items for the Mac App Store ("Doppl") build:

• 2.5.1 — verified the App Store bundle is free of _ssl/_tkinter and their flagged Tcl/Tk + OpenSSL symbols (nm scan across every Mach-O; enforced by a build assertion).
• 2.5.2 — the App Store build no longer bundles the MCP stdio bridge or any runnable helper script; it presents the loopback HTTP tool API instead. (This Developer-ID DMG keeps the bridge + one-click AI-tool setup.)
• 2.1(a) — local-first, no external server; App Review notes + "Explore with sample notes" exercise every feature offline.
• Guideline 4 — the app menu shows a proper Quit (⌘Q)/About using the app name.
• Privacy manifest declares SystemBootTime (35F9.1) to prevent ITMS-91053.

This DMG is the full-featured Developer-ID build (HTTPS connectors + one-click AI-tool setup), unchanged in features from build 14.

Local-first Cortex beta. External connections (MCP + universal HTTP tool API + SDK + browser extension + delivery), task-aware retrieval on by default, feedback logging, and menu-bar connect actions. Private, local-first memory for your Mac.

What's fixed (from your latest report)

• No more "obsidian" anywhere you can see it. The Home "Cortex noticed" card, the profile "where this comes from" rows, the Review source chips, and the Constellation node labels now say "your notes" / "Notes". (It remains an internal source id only.)
• "Cortex noticed" is grounded in reviewed memory only. The insight and its "seen N times" count now come exclusively from memory you've actually reviewed/approved (or from a trusted notes vault) — never from unreviewed pending items.
• The "Syncing…" bar is live again. It was frozen because the app only read progress every few seconds but only did the work every 30 minutes. It now processes work each tick, so the bar advances and completes. It also no longer shows engine jargon like "Embed memory".
• Menu bar: dropdown is clickable and the icon is calm. The popover flickered because it was resizing itself as state updated — it's now a fixed size and clickable, and the app no longer force-activates to show it. The icon now animates only while Cortex is working; a static count badge shows when items are waiting.

An interactive map of your profile

Your Constellation (people, topics, projects and the cited links between them) is on Home — click any node to explore. This build makes sure it never shows raw source ids.

Install

2. Drag Cortex.app to Applications.

What's fixed

• "Open Connections" on the last onboarding step now works. It was bouncing back to the first onboarding step instead of opening Connections & Privacy. Cause: a build-7 window-focus retry re-opened onboarding during the sheet handoff (onboarding closes so the Connections sheet can open — two sheets can't share one window). That retry has been removed; onboarding still appears instantly on first launch via the startup trigger.

Carried over from build 7

• First-run walkthrough appears immediately on launch (no longer gated behind the memory-engine cold start).
• One-time "Welcome to Cortex" notch on first launch + a "Show me the notch" preview in the Quick Capture step.

What's fixed (this is the "onboarding doesn't show" build)

• First-run walkthrough now appears instantly. It used to be the last step of startup — sequenced behind the whole memory-engine cold-start and 13 data loads — so on a fresh machine you'd see a blank window with no instructions. It now presents the instant the app launches, before the engine finishes booting.
• The onboarding sheet no longer silently fails to present. In the AppKit-hosted window the sheet could fail to open if the window wasn't key yet, with no retry. It's now re-driven when the window becomes active.
• You'll actually see the notch now. The notch pill only ever fired on "learned/captured" events, so a brand-new user saw nothing. Build 7 adds a one-time "Welcome to Cortex" notch on first launch, plus a "Show me the notch" preview button in the Quick Capture onboarding step.

Note on testing this on a machine that ran earlier builds: a re-download does not reset your local state (macOS keeps preferences + your vault). If you want to see the true first-run experience, see "Force a fresh first-run" below. The welcome notch uses a brand-new flag, so it will still fire once even on your existing machine.

Private, local-first memory for your Mac. Everything runs on-device; your memory is readable files plus a rebuildable index that you own.

Fixes in this build

• Menu-bar dropdown no longer flickers or swallows clicks. The activity animator was mutating the status-item button every frame while the popover was anchored to it, destabilizing the popover. The animator now freezes while the dropdown is open.
• The notch / menu-bar "learned something new" pill now actually appears. The notification view was being laid out at zero size, so the panel showed but rendered nothing. It now fills its panel and springs in below the notch when Cortex learns something new or saves a quick capture.
