MiSTerVision v1.7.0
MiSTerVision v1.7.0
Playback and library controls
- Next episode: When an episode ends, choose Play next episode or Back to episodes. The preview includes episode artwork and follows episode order across seasons. It works with Plex and Jellyfin, including playback started from Continue Watching. Nothing starts automatically.
- Skip intros and other segments: Press X on the default controller mapping or O on the keyboard when a skip prompt appears. Supported segments include intros, credits, recaps, previews, and commercials when supplied by the server. The prompt disappears after eight seconds. Up/Down brings it back while the segment is still active.
- Watched status: Mark movies and episodes watched or unwatched directly from their preview with X/O. Lists show a green Watched label alongside the duration.
- Music options: Select/Tab opens repeat and shuffle for the current album or playlist. X/O changes the music background.
- Held controls: Hold Left/Right to keep seeking. Hold Start for two seconds to open exit confirmation from any screen.
- List titles and subtitles keep consistent spacing even when titles contain descending letters such as “g” or “p”.
- Loading, buffering, and seeking overlays now have subtly rounded corners.
Segment availability depends on server metadata. Plex needs analyzed markers. Jellyfin needs a segment provider and a completed media-segment scan. Existing input profiles continue to control bindings and labels.
Validation and maintenance
The project now builds with Go 1.27.2 and updated analysis tools. Automated checks cover both providers, playback transitions, input, rendering, and update packaging. The controls and next-episode flow were also tested on MiSTer, including Plex episode playback.
Updating
Update through About or your existing Downloader registration. Manual installations use mistervision-v1.7.0-progressive.zip. The single package supports CRT and HDMI, including interlaced output, and preserves settings and sign-in.
If you are upgrading from v1.4.0 or earlier, use Downloader or install the ZIP manually once.
MiSTerVision v1.6.3
MiSTerVision v1.6.3
Playback controls
- Left/Right seeks backward or forward: 30 seconds for movies and shows, 10 seconds for music.
- LB/RB changes music tracks or moves between queued videos.
- Up/Down shows or hides playback controls.
Automatic trigger-axis bindings have been removed. This fixes unintended seeking on controllers whose right-stick axes were mistaken for triggers. Triggers are no longer part of the default playback layout. Explicit input profiles can still assign triggers to seeking or other actions. Live TV remains non-seekable.
On-screen instructions and controller documentation reflect the new layout. Automated input, playback, and rendering checks passed, and the controls were tested on MiSTer.
Updating
Update through About or your existing Downloader registration. Manual installations use mistervision-v1.6.3-progressive.zip, which supports progressive and interlaced output. Existing settings and sign-in are preserved.
If you added the axes 2/5 workaround from issue #30, remove those seek bindings to use the new defaults. Explicit configuration overrides are preserved by the update.
MiSTerVision v1.6.2
MiSTerVision v1.6.2
Release summary
Plex and Jellyfin now convert video to dimensions suited to the playback framebuffer, reducing unnecessary decoding work on MiSTer and SuperStation One. The change applies to movies, shows, and Live TV. Existing transcode limits remain caps, and source aspect ratio and local zoom behavior are preserved.
Validated with automated playback and display tests, MiSTer CRT and HDMI checks, and reporter testing on SuperStation One over HDMI. The reporter found Sonic and other shows smooth with the new sizing. This release also includes v1.6.1’s progressive video tearing fix and complete Plex artist album lists.
Installation
Update through About or your existing Downloader registration. Manual installations use mistervision-v1.6.2-progressive.zip, which supports progressive and interlaced output. Install the matching client and player together. Existing settings and sign-in are preserved. No configuration change is required.
MiSTerVision v1.6.1
MiSTerVision v1.6.1
Release summary
- Fixed video tearing in progressive output, including HDMI and 240p CRT playback. Frames are prepared separately from the displayed frame and presented through page flipping.
- Fixed missing or incomplete Plex artist album lists. Compilations, EPs, and other releases now appear alongside studio albums. Jellyfin browsing is unchanged.
Validated with automated playback, rendering, and browsing checks, plus on-device testing. A SuperStation One reporter confirmed the tearing improvement. Remaining stutter on that setup is still under investigation.
Installation
Update through About or your existing Downloader registration. Manual installations use mistervision-v1.6.1-progressive.zip, which supports both progressive and interlaced output. Install the matching client and player together. Existing settings and sign-in are preserved.
MiSTerVision v1.6.0
Widescreen presentation and music playback
- Backgrounds now fill widescreen displays throughout browsing, previews, music playback, and setup screens. The carousel shows more neighboring libraries across the full display width.
- Music playback has a cleaner layout: bold artist, song, and album information at the lower left, with timing aligned above the progress bar. The music meters and persistent header have been removed.
- Music remembers your background choice when you stop and start another song. Background options skip unavailable artwork, and loading artwork no longer briefly shows an unrelated effect.
- Text rendering is clearer in lists and the exit confirmation. Fixed a crash while scrolling long headings.
Validated with automated playback and rendering tests and on-device testing across HDMI, 240p CRT, and 480i CRT output. The final music layout was checked on 240p CRT and 720p HDMI.
Install or update using the existing instructions. The download keeps the progressive.zip filename and includes support for interlaced output through configuration.
MiSTerVision v1.5.3
MiSTerVision v1.5.3
Fixes startup with interlaced CRT output over YPbPr component. Affected setups could remain on the InterlacedMenu screen and then return to the MiSTer menu without opening MiSTerVision.
MiSTerVision now configures the full-height framebuffer required by its interlaced core. The correction applies automatically at startup and preserves existing color, sync, and other core settings.
Validation includes the automated regression suite and on-device interlaced and progressive startup checks on a MiSTer Multisystem 2 connected through component video.
MiSTerVision v1.5.2
MiSTerVision v1.5.2
This maintenance release adds no new features or capabilities. It improves error reporting and diagnostics to help troubleshoot startup, performance, and display issues.
- The standard launcher automatically saves bounded startup logs and preserves the last failed launch.
- Startup errors identify the active MiSTer INI file and explain how to enable a disabled Linux framebuffer.
- Playback diagnostics distinguish source metadata, requested transcode limits, Plex processing decisions, and the video format received by MPlayer.
Startup failures are recorded in /media/fat/mistervision/startup-error.log. For playback or display troubleshooting, follow the diagnostics instructions. This release does not include a confirmed fix for the outstanding SuperStation One reports.
SS1 playback diagnostics — temporary test build
Current full-application test: output-sized transcoding
Download output-size test 1 for issue #22. It retains the page-flipping fix and requests video sized for the playback framebuffer. It adds a separate MiSTerVision-Output-Size-Test Scripts entry. The normal installation is preserved.
Instructions, validation, and application source accompany the ZIP. This build reuses the instrumented player from the previous v1.6.0 page-flipping application test. Its corresponding source is mplayer-pageflip-source.tar.gz below.
A fixed-640×240 comparison using controlled encodes of the reporter's clip reduced CPU time by approximately 55%. This is not a confirmed fix for sustained SS1 stutter. It is a diagnostic build, not a stable update.
Earlier test packages and historical notes
Experimental tearing comparison for issue #22
Use version 3. It recognizes the Physical Disc Main executable (/media/fat/MiSTer_Physical-CD) shown in the reporter’s logs. Earlier versions could exit before playback because they did not recognize that executable. Extract over the previous diagnostic package if installed. The player and sample are unchanged. This launcher correction is not a confirmed tearing fix.
Download mistervision-pageflip-comparison-v3.zip to compare the current progressive presentation with an experimental page-flipping path. Extract to the SD card root, then run MiSTerVision-Tearing-Baseline and MiSTerVision-Tearing-Pageflip from the standard Scripts menu. Each plays the same 35-second muted sample and saves logs.
Read PAGEFLIP-V3-INSTRUCTIONS.md for instructions and PAGEFLIP-V3-VALIDATION.md for test results. Source is in mplayer-pageflip-source.tar.gz, with checksums in PAGEFLIP-V3-SHA256SUMS. The package does not replace MiSTerVision or edit MiSTer.ini. It temporarily owns the framebuffer hardware and pauses Main during each test.
Both modes looked smooth in the local HDMI comparison. SS1 tearing has not been reproduced locally, and this is not a confirmed fix. Earlier test packages remain available below. This prerelease does not replace stable v1.5.2.
Revised standalone test for issue #22
Use mistervision-plex-playback-test-v2.zip for the latest standalone comparison. It includes generated H.264/stereo MP3 media in Matroska and automatic native timing logs. It replaces the earlier mono-AAC sample for this comparison and removes continuous CPU sampling. Synchronization settings remain unchanged. Read PLEX-PLAYBACK.md for instructions and PLEX-PLAYBACK-VALIDATION.md for local validation. Checksums are in PLEX-PLAYBACK-SHA256SUMS.
The new Scripts entry is MiSTerVision-Plex-Playback-Test. Earlier downloads remain available for reference. This is a diagnostic package, not a stable update or a confirmed SS1 fix.
Temporary playback timing diagnostics for issue #22, based on v1.5.2. This is not a normal MiSTerVision update or a confirmed playback fix.
The diagnostic ZIP adds a separate Scripts entry and player. It leaves the installed application, installed player, display settings, and synchronization behavior unchanged. Use the included instructions to capture one affected playback session, then return to the normal MiSTerVision entry.
The accompanying source archive contains the corresponding patched MPlayer source. SHA-256 checksums and standalone instructions are included. The stable release remains v1.5.2.
MiSTerVision v1.5.1
MiSTerVision v1.5.1
- Fix startup and return to the menu when launching from ConsoleMode. CRT and HDMI use the same display settings as standard MiSTer launches.
- Support the active MiSTer INI profile, including alternate profiles, with separate configuration backups.
- Improve startup diagnostics for display settings and ConsoleMode failures.
Tested on a MiSTer Multisystem 2 with ConsoleMode 1.1.4.2 and the standard MiSTer menu, covering progressive CRT, interlaced CRT, and HDMI output. SuperStation One confirmation is still welcome.
Update through About or your existing Downloader/update_all installation when its database offers this version. Existing settings and sign-in are preserved. ConsoleMode CRT output requires a working framebuffer configuration. See Display setup.
MiSTerVision v1.5.0
MiSTerVision v1.5.0
HDMI support and clearer CRT text
MiSTerVision now supports HDMI displays alongside its CRT output. Automatic aspect handling fits video to the screen, and widescreen carousel backgrounds fill the display while text and controls keep their familiar layout.
- Bound framebuffer resolution independently of HDMI output timing. The default uses a 640×360 framebuffer for 720p and 1080p output, with hardware scaling to the display.
- Draw browsing text and artwork at the available viewport resolution. Larger framebuffer limits are configurable.
- Improve CRT readability with brighter secondary text, bold loading and seeking labels, and larger bold preview titles and text.
- Improve the picture, subtitle, and audio selection menus at smaller playback resolutions.
- Simplify installation to one package for progressive and interlaced output, with the interlaced core included.
- Reorganize display setup, updating, and troubleshooting instructions in the README.
Installation and updating
The application ZIP retains the -progressive.zip filename for existing updaters and Downloader. It supports CRT, HDMI, and configurable interlaced output. Existing settings and sign-in are preserved. No separate interlaced package is needed.
Users on v1.4.1 or later can update through About. If the MiSTerVision database is registered, exit the app and run update_all or Downloader once its database lists v1.5.0. Users on v1.4.0 or earlier must install through Downloader or copy the release files manually once.
For HDMI, keep application interlacing off and start with automatic aspect and default framebuffer limits. For CRT output, keep the timing appropriate to your television and adapter. See the README’s Display setup section for configuration examples.
How this release was tested
Testing used a MiSTer Multisystem 2, a consumer 4:3 CRT, and an HDMI monitor. Checks covered 240p and 480i CRT output, including composite video playback, and 720p and 1080p HDMI output. Browsing, preview text, video playback, Live TV, seeking, and playback controls were checked while choosing the defaults.
Automated checks cover rendering, display geometry, decoder behavior, startup recovery, and concurrency. Release verification checks the actual archives, executable metadata, checksums, and updater installation and recovery. The packaged client and player also run an isolated smoke test on MiSTer.
