NewTOS 0.6 (Alpha)
NewTOS 0.6 — first alpha for testers · Deutsch weiter unten
NewTOS is Atari TOS (GEMDOS, BIOS, XBIOS, VDI, AES) as an operating system of its own for the Raspberry Pi 4. It is not an emulator: Atari programs are recompiled from their sources and run natively. The model is EmuTOS in the Falcon/TOS 4 profile.
This is an alpha for trying out and finding bugs. Please use a spare SD card.
Installation
- Raspberry Pi 4, HDMI monitor, USB keyboard and mouse.
- SD card with an MBR partition table and a first partition FAT16, at most 2 GB. FAT32 and exFAT do not work yet, so neither does the Raspberry Pi Imager.
- Copy the contents of the ZIP's
KARTEfolder onto the partition and boot. - Commands for macOS, Windows and Linux are in
README.TXTinside the ZIP.
What is included
Desktop (EmuDESK rebuild), TeraDesk, QED, zView (10 image formats), Doom (shareware), CoreMark, Ball, the "System Information" accessory. German keyboard layout preset (delete KEYBOARD.KBD for US).
New since 0.5
- The desktop runs as an ordinary program; if it fails, the console starts.
- Accessories have their own ids; timers and messages wake programs correctly.
- Restart with Ctrl+Alt+Del (and +right Shift), TeraDesk "Reboot".
- Own drive and directory per program, 75 open files, output redirection, Ctrl-S/Ctrl-Q in the console.
Known limitations
No 68000 programs (.PRG/.TOS/.TTP/.ACC), one program at a time (plus accessories), no sound, no network, no battery clock, FAT16 only.
Report a bug
Please use Issues → New issue → Bug report (English or German). Attach a photo of any crash report. Anything that behaves differently from a real Atari is interesting.
