MenuTune v0.2.0
MenuTune now updates itself, and it no longer keeps a CPU core busy.
- Automatic updates: MenuTune checks GitHub once a day, downloads a new version in the background and installs it when you quit. Your queue is kept. To update right away, right-click the menu bar icon and choose Install MenuTune … and Restart. The same menu offers Check for Updates and the switch Install Updates Automatically.
- Updates are verified before they install: the disk image must match the SHA-256 digest GitHub publishes, and the app inside must carry MenuTune's bundle identifier, the expected version and a valid signature from the same Developer ID team.
- Much lower CPU use: the menu bar icon could redraw itself in a loop and keep a whole core busy, even while nothing was playing. MenuTune now sits at practically zero CPU when idle.
- Repeat menu: the button shows the current mode (Off, All, Track) next to the icon, and the menu marks the active choice.
Install or update
This is the first version with automatic updates, so getting to it is a manual step one last time:
- Download MenuTune-0.2.0-universal.dmg.
- Quit MenuTune if it is running.
- Open the DMG and drag MenuTune into Applications, replacing the previous version.
- Launch MenuTune. Your saved queue and preferences are retained.
From here on, MenuTune updates itself.
Requires macOS 14 or later. Supports Apple Silicon and Intel. The app and DMG are Developer ID signed, notarised by Apple, and include stapled notarisation tickets.
Verification
- All 30 automated tests passed.
- Universal build, signatures, notarisation and Gatekeeper checks passed.
- The update path was exercised with this exact disk image: digest check, staging, signature and version checks, and the bundle swap.
- Idle CPU measured at 0% (previously around 97% of one core).
- SHA-256 checksum included in
SHA256SUMS.txt. - Intel hardware and older macOS versions were not separately exercised.
MenuTune remains an experimental release; the documented limitations still apply.
Changes: v0.1.2...v0.2.0
MenuTune v0.1.2
Makes the pop-out player dependable and adds a pause button for it.
- Play/pause while popped out: the strip left in the menu now has a play/pause button next to Put video back. Both respond across their whole area.
- The pop-out window shows the video again. It could stay empty after popping out a video that was playing in the menu.
- The first click in the menu counts. It could close the menu instead of pressing the button.
- Put video back stays available when the queue is emptied while the video is popped out.
- Next Track in the right-click menu is disabled when the queue is empty.
- Less redrawing while a video plays.
