Bazzite boots to black screen after switching to integrated GPU

Describe the bug

After switching graphics mode to integrated only, laptop booted into a blank boot screen (only company logo) and no commands work. No amount of waiting fixed it.

Rebooting leads to the same issue.

What did you expect to happen?

It should have booted into the OS using only the integrated GPU.

Lenovo Legion 7i 2024 with an RTX 4080 and i9 Intel CPU (with integrated Intel graphics)

I tried to switch to the integrated GPU only mode because I noticed that the dGPU was being used all the time even for non graphics intensive applications in hybrid mode. I clicked on the button to change to integrated and it told me to log out.

When trying to login, it just got stuck on black screen with a loading icon. Pressing esc gave me a terminal view with a long list of what looked to be a service trying to start and failing in a loop. I did not note down this info and have not been able to get it to appear again.

I force restarted the laptop and it got stuck with a black screen again without a loading icon this time. No buttons work in this state. I tried pressing Ctrl+alt+f2 and every other function key, but none of them did anything.

I tried using grub boot settings to add "nomodeset" before the quiet parameter of the Linux command (as suggested by other threads). This did not change anything.

I am not sure what else to try since I can't get any terminal to run commands, and I do not currently have any bootable recovery media.

I think it's likely that the intel drivers never installed correctly and there was no prompt for it so I never realised. The OS still gave me the option to switch to internal GPU only mode.

I had been able to use the intel GPU in distrobox at some point, I remember running the openGL commands to see what GPU is used and it showed intel. Unsure why this failed now.

I installed rwfus (did not install anything on it), and Nix. I did not install anything on these to my knowledge.

I installed a second set of nvidia drivers specifically for a distrobox installation (using commands only run inside the distrobox.) I'm unsure if this would have caused any issues since it isn't used in the main bazzite OS, and has so far caused no issues.

Update: after a few reboots, it fixed itself. I think the last reboot I did I tried booting with the grub entry modified to have 1 at the end of the Linux command. This did not change anything on that boot, but after reboot it suddenly works again. The graphics mode has been reset to hybrid with the prompt dGPU power: active.

This does not mean the issue is fixed. Because I still can't use integrated only mode.

Edit: it looks like triple force reboot makes it work again, but on restart it breaks and goes back to black screen.

In the Desktop UI, it says it's in hybrid mode but it's still doing the issue where it hangs on reboot. Unsure what is going wrong. I can use my laptop for now but this really needs a fix. I can now access the OS and terminal to help with debugging, but my OS is still very much broken.

Update: issue is very likely to do with supergfx.

I tried running the following command:

supergfxcli -m Integrated
supergfxcli -m Hybrid

After this, it is able to boot without issues. Switching to integrated also works with this, but it's very finicky.

Using the Supergfx UI in the taskbar WILL CAUSE THE BOOT HANG. Doing it via cli for whatever reason worked.

Maybe look at disabling the UI until it's fixed?

Update 3: I think I fixed my OS, but this is still very broken. Using SuperGFX from the UI breaks things really bad.

Here's the recovery steps in case anyone else gets the issue:

Fix:
Boot into recovery mode and run:
systemctl start supergfxd
supergfxctl -m Hybrid

It seems to be working, but need to do more testing.

In case you can't even get into recovery mode or get TTY, force reboot 3-4 times and it'll go into the OS somehow/get you access to TTY. Just run the above commands and it should work.

The true solution: don't ever use supergfx from the UI. It breaks things. The cli can handle it without issues it looks like from my testing.

The main issue that SuperGFX destroys your OS is still not fixed. This is just recovery steps.
