[Request] Toggle on and off specific icons

I use Steam, Variety, Discord, Slack, and Insync, which all have an indicator icon and makes the top bar pretty cluttered in addition to other things I have up there. I don't need to see all those icons all the time, would it be possible to add a toggle for showing and hiding specific icons/indicators?

The reason for my +1 is that every other operating system I've tried (namely Windows and macOS) allow you to manage these icons in one way or another.

The problem is not only having an unwanted icon, is that some (Slack, for example) show a DOT to indicate unread messages. Now I know not everybody has the same issue and there are people out there with over 20k unread messages in their inboxes like one day they will read them (lol), but I cannot; it's part of a big (to me) visual distraction, so my screens are very clean, with no notification/red "dot"/sound coming unexpected because I get distracted and cannot continue until I remove the "distraction".

In Slack's case (the worst offender almost always no matter where you look at), this cannot be disabled, and to make matters worse, the "dot" doesn't even respect my notification settings. I have slack to NOT show any notification/dot/etc. (as much as the program allows), and yet this "icon" and its "dot" are always here; even for workspaces that you have muted, so if you are logged to a "lot" of Slack workspaces, chances are the icon is going to be "red" at all times.

My first instinct as a user, was to click and drag, or "alt" click, or "super" click, or something. None worked.
Telegram (another offender) does have an option to "hide try icon", but slack (and many other apps don't).

I don't believe the default Gnome session this should allow apps (and not users) control over what is shown on the screen at a given time. This can escalate to an incredible amount of "icons" showing states that you may or may not want to see at all times.

My Gnome/Gnome-Shell programming skills are near zero (as is my "C" skill as well), but I'm more than happy to help, test, and participate in this discussion for it is very important, to the point where I am considering switching away from Gnome (despite the PITA that would mean for I've been using it for almost two years and that means getting used to a "new thing") just because the icon thing is getting out of control (to me).

Gonna +1 this and give another important use case: I use fcitx5 with mozc for Japanese text input, so it would be nice to have the fcitx icon on the top bar, but tray icons for Discord and Steam are kinda pointless by me, since I already know when these are running.

there should be a drop-down list that would be enough for hidden apps, extension>settings>add apps tab would be the right solution of the problem or number of hidden items could be another solution.

These are all issues asking for either the ability to hide icons, blacklist icons, or an overflow menu, which seem to me like they are similar feature requests. Thought it'd be nice to gather them here. It would perhaps be best to mass-close these issues and direct all new similar requests to this issue.

+1 to the ability to show/hide icons, top bar become super cluttered if one uses a lot of programs that have tray icons.

Tray Icons: Reloaded can do this, but it has it's own additional problems this extension doesn't. I hate having to choose between these 2 extensions, I don't see why after 5 years there can't be a simple overflow mode.
