Magnetic v0.1.0
Magnetic v0.1.0 — first release of a Final Cut Pro-style non-linear video editor for Windows, built with Electron, React, and TypeScript.
Highlights
- Magnetic timeline — spine + connected clips, lanes, gap clips, snapping; clips never overlap, edits ripple; full undo/redo via a pure TypeScript kernel with inverse ops
- Edit grammar — append
E/ insertW/ connectQ/ overwriteD, ripple delete, lift; select/blade/trim tools (ripple, roll, slip); magnetic drag-rearrange - Playback — WebCodecs decode into a WebGL2 compositor with per-clip transforms, color board (exposure/contrast/saturation/temperature), transitions (dissolve, wipes, fade-to-black), titles; AudioContext-clocked A/V sync (measured drift <= 4 ms)
- Edit-by-transcript — fully local whisper.cpp transcription; click a word to seek, select text and delete to cut video, one-click filler-word removal, transcript search
- Export — WYSIWYG H.264/AAC MP4 via bundled ffmpeg (exported pixels match the live compositor within 1/255 mean diff), with progress and cancel
- Missing-media relink, keyboard-shortcut overlay (
Shift+?), filmstrip browser with hover-skim and background thumbnail/waveform jobs
Install
Download magnetic-0.1.0-setup.exe below and run it (Windows 10/11 x64). The installer bundles ffmpeg, ffprobe, whisper.cpp, and the base.en model (~250 MB of binaries) - no first-run downloads.
Quality bar (all verified in CI-style E2E)
- 164 unit tests + 14 Playwright Electron E2E tests green in one run, including a 5-minute playback soak (RSS growth x0.82) and a packaged-app boot test
- Startup-to-interactive 644 ms; 500-clip timeline at 0.7 ms median frame draw
- Whisper transcript accuracy 100% on the reference fixture; transcript cuts land within 0.00 frames
Known limitations
Multicam, keyframe animation, scopes, compound clips, ProRes/HEVC encode, and collaboration are out of scope for this release; J reverse playback is viewer-only; 4K plays at degraded fidelity. See the README for the full list.
