Solstice 0.4.0 adds editable, non-destructive filter stacks and reusable templates to the Reference Images Tool.

What's changed since 0.3.0

  • Reference image filters (#22): combine multiple native effects while preserving the original pixels and image placement. Edit parameters, reorder, disable or remove effects, preview the combined result and undo stack changes. Settings travel with .kra and .krf files.
  • Reusable templates (#23): save effect order, parameters and enabled states under a name. Reuse the stack on another reference image or in another document. Templates persist in the active Solstice profile; applied images keep independent copies.
  • Illustrated guidance: Reference Tool overview and detailed filter guide.

Reference filters support one selected image and native mask-compatible filters. G'MIC is not part of this feature. Processing uses the reference image's 8-bit sRGB representation and clips effects to the original bounds. Existing Saturation and Opacity controls remain separate. External filter resources are not bundled with templates.

Download

Windows x64: download Solstice-0.4.0-windows-x64-88386550c1dd.zip, extract it and start Solstice.exe. No installer is needed.

  • This is an unsigned package. Settings and resources remain in %APPDATA%\Solstice, separate from Krita.
  • The -dbg.zip contains debug symbols for crash reports; it is not the application download.
  • SHA256SUMS.txt contains checksums for both ZIP files.
  • Explorer .kra/.krz thumbnails can be registered with shellex\register-thumbnails.cmd (guide).

Scope and supported environment

  • 0.4.0 is a regular release. Feature-specific limits remain as documented in the user guides.
  • Tested locally on Windows 11, 64-bit; the downloadable package is built on GitHub's Windows runner.
  • The Vulkan engine remains experimental, targets NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs and is tested on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell. Other GPUs are untested; see the GPU Engine guide.
  • Linux and macOS are not validated. Android is not supported.
  • The Simplified Chinese interface uses an AI-translated catalog; terminology and layout may still need refinement.

Please report problems in Solstice Issues. Solstice is independent of the Krita project and KDE. See the website and user guides.

Build and verification

  • Commit: 88386550c1dd51975ee47ea33be9beb254b9e7ad, following merges of #22, #23 and version preparation #24.

  • Build: GitHub Actions run 38998728479.

  • Dependency versions and sources: windows-dependencies.lock.json; build details: BUILD-INFO.txt.

  • The feature's local regression suite passed for effect ordering, original-image preservation, XML/legacy/clone isolation, asynchronous invalidation/destruction and template reload, reuse, overwrite, deletion and invalid-file handling. The user accepted the demonstrated filter/template workflow. These are existing feature-test results, not new tests of the release package.

  • Cloud CI uses BUILD_TESTING=OFF: it verifies compilation and packaging, not interactive painting or GPU runtime behavior.

  • Windows compilation, installation and packaging passed, including the GPU engine, Python plugins and bundled CPU G'MIC runtime.

  • Application ZIP SHA-256: fd755db574c4a98aa6fc0b9e6c82273d256cd467e1371e9d8044399984921cfc.

  • Both ZIPs passed SHA-256 and full CRC checks (5,313 application entries and 220 debug entries). Required runtimes, QML, translations and shell integration files were present. The dependency lock matches the built revision after Windows line-ending normalization.

  • The packaged executable reports 0.4.0 and the release commit in Windows version metadata; an isolated-profile version invocation exited successfully.
