Peg 0.6.1
Six changes since 0.6.0, all about editing what is already on screen.
Captions
- Line breaks work. A caption was a one-line field drawn into a one-line box, so a second line pushed the first out of sight. It is a growing text view now, and both the renderer and the grab area measure the text. ⏎ finishes the snip; ⇧⏎ or ⌥⏎ starts a new line.
- Double-click reopens a caption for editing, and the mark is hidden while its editor is open — before, the two copies stacked into a doubled, bolder ghost.
- Changing the size no longer blurs it. The new font is applied to the whole text instead of only to the control, and the editor stays on whole points so glyphs do not land between pixels.
Sizing
The size controls follow the selected mark, not whatever was drawn last: a mark selects itself by being drawn or clicked, the wheel and [/] and − 粗细 N + act on it, and with nothing selected they set the value for the next mark. A caption being typed counts as selected and grows as you scroll.
Colour
A swatch in the bar opens a palette (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white, black). c copies the colour under the pointer as #RRGGBB, ⇧c as rgb(r, g, b).
The frame
An existing frame is no longer lost to a stray press: drag inside it to move it, drag a corner to resize, and a plain click does nothing. Dragging outside still starts a new one.
Replay
Every finished snip keeps its frozen frame (JPEG, quality 0.9) plus its selection and marks. Inside a snip, , walks back and . walks forward — the frame, the selection and the annotations come back ready to edit. 10 / 30 / 50 kept, default 30, oldest dropped first.
Both keys are rebindable in settings; they are never registered as global hot keys.

Peg 0.6.0
Fourteen fixes and features since 0.5.0 — mostly the things the first release made obvious.
The clothesline
- Reaching it with the pointer — the line only drops when the pointer is at the very top of the display now. With the menu bar set to hide itself, the old trigger covered a band macOS does not draw, so the line fell while the pointer was on its way to click something else.
- Hover previews — a drag no longer kills the preview for that sheet, and moving along the line no longer loses every preview after the first. The black card behind the picture is gone; a shadow lifts it instead, so a screenshot's rounded corners stay transparent.
- Speed — a 5K preview took ~190 ms to decode on the main thread, on every hover. Decoding moved off the main thread and results are cached.
- Hints — the type sits on a dark pill so it survives a busy background, and it quotes whatever the shortcuts are actually bound to instead of
⌃⌥Xforever. - New sheets — a capture is now seen hanging itself on the rope: the line comes down first, then the sheet drops and swings.
Annotating
- Hovering a tool names it and its digit (
马赛克 7); the bar is centred on the selection instead of pinned to its left edge. - Mark size is adjustable — wheel,
[], or− 粗细 4 +in the bar, switching to字号for text. The mark you just drew follows the change, so the number and the picture agree; before, you had to draw something to find out and then live with it. - Captions can be picked up and dragged, ⏎ inside one finishes the snip, and a click with a tool active no longer discards the selection.
- A plain click anywhere no longer collapses the frame — only a drag starts a new one.
Capturing
- Displays are captured in parallel, and the settle before freezing is skipped when the line is not up.
⌃⌥L— long capture has its own shortcut instead of hiding behindLinside a snip.⇧with a snip keeps Peg's own windows in the frame, for photographing Peg.
Recording
The GIF frame is a rounded outline with a soft halo and a marching hairline, instead of a hard 3 pt red box.
Updating
检查更新… in the menu compares the installed version with the latest release and installs it in place. This is the only network traffic Peg makes, and only when asked.
Peg 0.5.0
Menu-bar screenshot tool for macOS. Free, MIT, no account, no telemetry.
What's in this release
- Snip —
⌃⌥Xframes a region or a window and saves it on mouse-up;⌃⌥Aopens the tool bar instead - Inline annotation — rectangle, ellipse, arrow, pen, marker, text, mosaic, blur, drawn straight on the frozen screen
- Scroll capture — manual scrolling, stitched by row fingerprints, works upwards too
- GIF recording —
⌃⌥G, up to ~17 s at 12 fps, with a red frame showing the recording area - Clothesline — recent shots hang under the menu bar with timestamps; hover to preview, click to copy, drag anywhere,
⌥-drag to pin where you drop - Pins — any shot floats above other windows, zoomable with the scroll wheel; copied text pins as a dark code card
- Clipboard walk —
⌃⌥Vstarts from the newest copy and walks back through recent copies and older shots on disk - History, settings, custom shortcuts —
⌃⌥H,⌃,, and every shortcut is rebindable in settings
Installing
-
Unzip
-
Double-click
install.command— it moves Peg into /Applications, clears the quarantine flag and opens itmacOS blocks apps that are not notarised and calls them "damaged"; the file is fine, Gatekeeper just refuses to run it. If you would rather do it by hand:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Peg.app
-
First snip asks for Screen Recording; grant it, then quit and reopen Peg
Requires macOS 14 or newer, Apple silicon. Not notarised: there is no paid Apple Developer account behind this, so the step above is unavoidable.
