Legacy direct-HTTP avatar existence check removed per owner directive
(no backward compat in alpha): serializers branch, conf/MODULE docs,
capabilities summary, and the legacy-mode tests. Valid values are now
'comm' (default) | 'off'. Breaking -> minor bump per house semver.
