Ship of Harkinian 9.2.3 for Wii U — r2

Choose a tag to compare

@utsnik utsnik released this 04 Oct 19:50

The second release of Ship of Harkinian 9.2.3 for the Wii U: an easier install, a one-click texture-pack helper, and fixes for console freezes.

No game data is included. You make your own oot.o2r once on a PC, using desktop SoH 9.2.3 and your own legally dumped ROM.

Install

  1. Make oot.o2r with desktop SoH 9.2.3 (Windows, Linux or macOS).
  2. Extract soh-wiiu-9.2.3-r2.zip to the root of your SD card. It already contains the right folders (wiiu/apps/soh.wuhb and wiiu/apps/soh923/).
  3. Copy your oot.o2r into sd:/wiiu/apps/soh923/.
  4. Start Ship of Harkinian from the Wii U Menu.

Updating from r1: extract the zip over your card. Your saves, settings and texture packs in soh923/ are kept. On its first start r2 switches your Djipi / Art Plus packs to the tested selection once (r1 had turned every pack on); turn any optional pack back on in the mod menu if you want it.

New: SoH Wii U Pack Helper (Windows)

SoH-WiiU-Pack-Helper.exe converts the texture packs you downloaded so they run well on the Wii U, and puts them on your SD card for you:

  1. Download the packs from their author's page, for example Djipi's 3DS Experience + Skilar's Art Plus Link (the helper links to it too).
  2. Put the SD card in your PC, start the Pack Helper and click Choose your SD card... (USB Partition users: pick the FAT32 part of the USB drive, and click Cancel if Windows offers to format a drive).
  3. Pick the downloaded pack zips and press Start. It takes about 5 to 15 minutes.

In testing on a Wii U, converted packs cut GPU time per frame from 21.8 to 8.4 ms and the pause when entering a new area from up to 5.5 s to under 1.5 s (none at all on later visits). Your other packs stay where they are: only older versions of the packs you convert are moved to a mods-backup folder, and nothing is deleted. Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Linux and macOS: run python3 -m packhelper from soh/wiiu/ in the source. Packs copied into mods/ by hand still work, just slower.

No texture pack is included or redistributed: the helper converts your own download on your own PC.

Changes since r1

  • Easier install: the zip mirrors the SD card.
  • Texture packs start with a tested selection: new Djipi 3DS Experience / Art Plus Link packs start in the play-tested set and order (optional extras, Djipi's own Link textures under Art Plus, and the heavy Hyrule Field 3DS terrain start off; one click in the mod menu turns them on).
  • Fixed: starting without oot.o2r froze the console. It now shows a message saying what is missing and where it goes.
  • Fixed: updating from r1 turned on every texture pack (Djipi's own Link textures under Art Plus gave Link an odd face, and the heavy Hyrule Field terrain made Hyrule lag). r2 applies the tested selection once on its first start.
  • Fixed: opening the Save Editor froze the console. Menus can no longer freeze the console over a missing icon.
  • The skybox repair script also reads Djipi's current .otr download.

Known limits

  • If you start SoH without oot.o2r, the message tells you to hold the POWER button to turn off the Wii U (HOME is switched off on that screen, because returning to the Menu from it froze the console). Do that, copy oot.o2r, and start again. A clean return to the Wii U Menu from that message is planned for the next release.
  • Busy scenes can dip below 30 fps; set 20 fps in the menu if that bothers you.
  • Distant textures can shimmer (no mipmapping yet).
  • Some torch and lamp glows in Hyrule Field show through the hills as small yellow dots.
  • Master Quest and ROM versions other than NTSC-U 1.2 have not been tested on a Wii U yet.

Credits

  • HarbourMasters and every Ship of Harkinian contributor. This is their game engine; the port only adds the Wii U layer. If you enjoy it, support them.
  • Kenix3 and the libultraship contributors, plus the Fast3D authors.
  • GaryOderNichts, whose original Wii U port of SoH (the GX2 renderer and shader generator) this release builds on.
  • Djipi for the 3DS Experience texture pack, and Skilar for Art Plus Link.
  • devkitPro / wut and the Aroma team.

Ship of Harkinian 9.2.3 for Wii U — first release

Choose a tag to compare

@utsnik utsnik released this 03 Oct 18:21

The first release of Ship of Harkinian 9.2.3 for the Wii U: an unofficial port of the PC version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, running natively under Aroma.

No game data is included. You make your own oot.o2r once on a PC, using desktop SoH 9.2.3 and your own legally dumped ROM. The full guide is in README.md inside the zip.

Install

  1. Make oot.o2r with desktop SoH 9.2.3 (Windows, Linux or macOS).
  2. Copy the files to the SD card:
    sd:/wiiu/apps/soh.wuhb
    sd:/wiiu/apps/soh923/soh.o2r
    sd:/wiiu/apps/soh923/oot.o2r

  3. Start Ship of Harkinian from the Wii U Menu.

Texture packs (.o2r/.otr) go in sd:/wiiu/apps/soh923/mods/.

What works

  • The game, with SoH's in-game menu and settings. Tested on the NTSC-U 1.2 ROM.
  • TV and GamePad output.
  • Texture packs. Djipi's 3DS Experience pack has been played at full resolution.
  • Runs at 30 fps by default, with frustum culling, a faster triangle path and fewer texture-upload stalls. The original 20 fps is one setting away.
  • Every button press and release reaches the game (no missed presses or stuck spin attacks).
  • Dirt paths in Hyrule Field, Kokiri Forest and Hyrule Castle are drawn over the grass ("Fix Vanishing Paths" is on by default).
  • Faster area changes with texture packs: pack textures are kept between areas while memory allows.

Known limits

  • Busy scenes can dip below 30 fps; set 20 fps in the menu if that bothers you.
  • Entering a new area can pause briefly while it loads from the SD card, more so with big texture packs.
  • Distant textures can shimmer (no mipmapping yet).
  • Some torch and lamp glows in Hyrule Field show through the hills as small yellow dots.
  • Master Quest and ROM versions other than NTSC-U 1.2 have not been tested on a Wii U yet.

  • Djipi for the 3DS Experience texture pack, which most of the Wii U testing was done with. Download it from Djipi's page.
  • devkitPro / wut and the Aroma team.
