v1.000.070 + firmware 7.40/7.61 fix ("can't protect")
Update (2026-10-09): the real cause of the 7.40 "can't protect" crash is ShadowMountPlus pausing kstuff about 15 s after launch, not the firmware. kstuff is what makes
mprotect(PROT_EXEC)work on 7.x. Fix: addkstuff_no_pause=PPSA99008to/data/shadowmount/config.ini(it reloads by itself); with that, the official releases work on 7.40 too. Details: blackbearreloaded#37 and blackbearreloaded#43.
ProsperoEden v1.000.070 built with a fix for PS5 firmware 7.40 and 7.61 (likely all 7.xx).
Verified on 7.40 only. Reports so far: 7.61 (one user, 2026-10-07) - games run ("flawlessly", in their words) once a keys/firmware mismatch on their side was sorted out. Two of the 7.x line confirmed; others still welcome. The permission rule behind the bug is probably the same across the 7.x line, but that is an expectation, not a test result. If you try it on 7.01, 7.20, 7.61 or another 7.x firmware, a note of what happened would firm this up.
If your console shows this in /data/prosperoeden/logs/stderr.log a few seconds after every game starts:
[ProsperoEden] GPU worker: can't protect
[ProsperoEden] session failed: Rendering failed: can't protect. Try another graphics backend in Settings, then reopen the game.
or, on OpenGL, the same line followed by a Switch error 2010-0212 in the Eden log, this build is for you. Switching renderers, firmware dumps, keys, game versions or updates does not help; jailbreaking the app with etaHEN makes it worse (the CPU JIT's alias then fails with EACCES).
Cause: firmware 7.40 refuses mprotect(PROT_EXEC) for an app that is not jailbroken, and the GPU macro JIT needed exactly that. This build runs those macros through the interpreter instead. Measured on a retail PS5 on 7.40: a large open-world game holds its native 30 fps cap at 1x with default settings. Full report: README-FW740.md inside the zip, and upstream pull request blackbearreloaded#28.
Install: unzip, copy the PPSA99008 folder to /data/homebrew/PPSA99008 (replace the stock one; close ProsperoEden first). Keys, firmware, games and settings in /data/prosperoeden are untouched. Do NOT add PPSA99008 to etaHEN's app-jailbreak list; the app is meant to run un-jailbroken, as released.
Source: branch fw740-macro-jit-alias of this fork (builds on a GitHub-hosted ubuntu-24.04 runner; see .github/workflows/build-fw740.yml). Two changes against v1.000.070: headless/macro_recovery.cmake (interpreter-only macro engine) and tools/link-headless-native.sh (--no-dynamic-linker for lld 18).
Search terms: ProsperoEden 7.40, can't protect, Rendering failed: can't protect, 2010-0212, PS5 Switch emulator firmware 7.40, EDEN_JIT_ALIAS errno=13.
Troubleshooting: "Firmware NCA validation failed (code 21)" on the setup screen is not this bug. Code 21 is Eden's ErrorMissingKeyAreaKey: your prod.keys was dumped from an older Switch firmware than the firmware NCAs you copied in. Re-dump the keys on a Switch running that firmware or newer, or use an older firmware dump.
