Warning

Very long image-heavy conversations remain a known limitation. An earlier test produced incomplete output while reporting success, and later testing exhausted memory. That case has not been revalidated. A successful long text-chat export does not establish that image-heavy case is fixed. Check important saved conversations against the source. Automatic numbered parts and ZIP export with original images are wishlist items, not features of this release.

What changed

HTML/PDF exports can now include loaded images, generated-image replies, static SVG diagrams and readable canvas snapshots. Image-only replies keep their own message identity and position. Generated-image galleries use normal document flow so large pictures do not cover the following message.

Modern ChatGPT code blocks retain their loaded lines, indentation, blank lines, language label and supported syntax colors. Compact printing allows long code blocks to continue across pages. Unloaded editor gaps are marked rather than reconstructed.

The collector accepts additional existing ChatGPT message identifiers, preserves ordering across virtualized windows and no longer stops at fixed 300-batch/1200-step ceilings. Ambiguous identities and stalled collection still stop with an error.

Content images are awaited before their window is captured. Decorative icons and activity media omitted from the output are excluded consistently from waiting, capture and resource accounting. In particular, a blocked Google faviconV2 icon in a citation no longer prevents a text conversation from exporting. The runtime tested as 0.5.5 test 8 successfully exported the user's very long text conversation; the user confirmed the result on October 24, 2026.

Memory handling and remaining limitations

Large or image-heavy conversations are not yet reliably validated. An earlier image-heavy export saved only part of a chat while reporting success, and later testing produced an out-of-memory failure. The same heavy chat has not been revalidated with this release. Verify the beginning, middle and end of important saved conversations, and do not rely on this release as the sole archive of a large image-rich chat.

The extension now limits collected media and serialized data, prepares at most two source-image decodes at once, avoids unused HTML/Markdown copies, releases export caches and scratch canvases, and offers Stop during collection. Exceeding a resource limit aborts the export explicitly; it does not intentionally save a truncated file. These safeguards are not a guarantee about total browser memory, and no measured peak-RAM reduction is claimed.

Images retain the resolution already loaded by the page, not necessarily the full-resolution original. Unreadable HTTP(S) images may remain labelled external references; unavailable blob content and unsupported diagram elements receive notices. Failed or timed-out content-image loading stops collection. Interactive applications, inaccessible frames and visual content outside recognized messages remain unsupported or incomplete.

Automatic splitting into numbered parts is not included in 0.5.5. It remains future work, together with further validation of very large image-heavy conversations. A prepared PDF tab can be printed normally, but reloading it requires a new export.

Validation and privacy

The release keeps the tested runtime from test 8; only the popup's test label is removed. Automated coverage includes long virtualized collection, media, formatting, resource limits, cancellation, diagnostics, timestamps and existing UI behavior. Local Firefox checks preserve a raster, SVG and canvas in both HTML and PDF while a favicon request is blocked; the PDF was rendered and visually inspected. See validation details.

The successful long-text user test is distinct from the unresolved image-heavy case. The original third-party reports did not include their DOM or version, so their exact interface variants are not all verified.

No permissions were added. Processing remains local; there is no telemetry, remote code or conversation upload. Firefox may load the conversation page's existing lazy image URLs. Exported external image references may request their original host when opened. On failure, optional diagnostic details contain structural flags and dimensions, with no conversation text, URLs, IDs, cookies or pixels.

Wishlist — not included in 0.5.5

  • A ZIP export with the conversation and separate original image files, where the service exposes authorized access to the originals. A saved preview must never be labelled as an original.
  • Automatic numbered parts for large exports, preserving message order and image associations with an index and explicit completeness checks.
  • Further investigation of incomplete image-heavy collection and peak memory use.

See the wishlist. These items have no promised delivery date.

Installation and release files

Download Dialogue-Export-v0.5.5-signed.xpi, the Mozilla-returned package for permanent installation in Firefox 142 or later. Open about:addons, choose the gear menu, select Install Add-on From File, and choose the XPI. Reload ChatGPT/Gemini after updating.

The signed XPI was compared with the exact AMO submission: all 23 runtime files are present, only manifest formatting differs, parsed manifest settings are identical, and the only added files are signature metadata under META-INF/.

  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.5.zip — runtime files for temporary installation: extract, open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, choose Load Temporary Add-on, then select manifest.json.
  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.5-source.zip — complete development sources, tests and documentation; not an installation package.
  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.5-release-kit.zip — the signed XPI, runtime/source ZIPs, release notes, wishlist and component checksums together.
  • SHA256SUMS.txt — SHA-256 checksums for the attached packages and documents. The kit contains its own component checksums.

The release kit is a distribution bundle for the extension; it is unrelated to the proposed conversation ZIP export above.

Dialogue Export v0.5.4 — compact PDF and ChatGPT activity sections

@vaulthunt3r vaulthunt3r released this 11 Oct 18:53

Compact PDF pagination (#5)

Enable Export options → Compact PDF pagination to let messages flow across printed pages. This removes message boxes in print while retaining author labels and spacing. It works for PDF exports and printing exported HTML; on-screen HTML is unchanged. The option defaults off and is remembered.

Firefox could move a nested message box to the next page, leaving a large blank area. Allowing breaks alone did not fix the reproduced case. Removing the article box from compact print layout did: the sample decreased from 5 pages to 4 with the first answer starting on page 1. Browser margins, paper size and content still affect pagination.

Working / Thinking sections (#4)

Enable Export options → Include Working / Thinking sections in ChatGPT and expand the sections you want before exporting. Available progress text and tool summaries are included before their associated answer in TXT, Markdown, HTML, JSON and PDF. HTML uses collapsible sections; PDF receives them expanded. The option defaults off and is remembered; Gemini is unsupported.

Only content available in the page can be collected. Collapsed sections get an explicit missing-content notice. The extension does not automatically expand sections or recover vanished progress or private reasoning. If a section cannot be safely associated with one assistant message, export stops with an explanation; disable the option for an ordinary export on unsupported layouts.

Validation

62 automated tests passed. Local Edge and Firefox pagination checks passed, and the user confirmed the compact PDF fix. A real-chat HTML export confirms correct ordering and no duplication for the expanded activity section; collapsed sections contain the expected notices. Other ChatGPT layouts may differ. No additional permissions; processing remains local.

Thanks to oshonsoft for both feature requests and to the user who supplied diagnostics and tested the builds.

Installation and files

Download Dialogue-Export-v0.5.4-signed.xpi for permanent Firefox installation. Open about:addons, choose the gear menu → Install Add-on From File, and select the XPI. Reload conversation tabs after updating.

The Mozilla-returned XPI matches all 22 runtime files from the tested submission, apart from manifest formatting and added signature metadata. Also attached: runtime ZIP, development source ZIP and SHA-256 checksums. The source ZIP is for development, not installation.

Dialogue Export v0.5.3 — fix mixed ChatGPT exports

Choose a tag to compare

@vaulthunt3r vaulthunt3r released this 01 Oct 15:56

Important: check exports made with 0.5.2

Version 0.5.2 can include messages from another ChatGPT conversation even when the export title and source URL are correct. This affects the shared collector used by every format; switching formats is not a workaround.

Update to 0.5.3 and reload ChatGPT tabs. Check important previous exports before sharing them and re-export affected files. If an affected file was already shared, review and replace or remove that copy where possible. Other extension versions have not been assessed for this defect.

Why it happened

The collector searched message markers across the whole document without excluding hidden message trees or validating conversation ownership. If ChatGPT retained another chat’s markup in the page, those messages could enter the export too. Meanwhile, the title and source URL came from the current page, making the mixed file look correctly labelled.

This mechanism was reproduced in a local fixture. The exact live DOM at the time of the report was not captured. VPN/DNS involvement has not been established. The reported case involved the user’s own other conversations; there is no evidence of access to other users’ chats or network transmission by the extension.

What changed

  • Exclude hidden/inert message trees and previews outside the main conversation area, while retaining offscreen messages needed for long exports.
  • Stop if visible message ownership conflicts with the current chat URL, rather than risk retaining an unrelated question.
  • Abort if the URL changes during collection, before saving.
  • No additional permissions or external requests.

Validation

54 automated tests passed. The affected user confirmed correct conversation content and successful HTML/PDF checks. A local comparison reproduced mixing in 0.5.2 and excluded the unrelated message in 0.5.3 without network requests. Additional headless Edge checks could not be rerun due to a local launch/approval failure. Markdown formatting is unchanged.

Installation

Download Dialogue-Export-v0.5.3-signed.xpi. In Firefox open about:addons, choose the gear menu → Install Add-on From File, select the XPI, then reload ChatGPT.

The Mozilla-returned runtime matches the tested submission, with only manifest formatting differences and added signing metadata. Also attached: runtime ZIP, development source ZIP, and SHA-256 checksums. The source ZIP is not the installation package.

Dialogue Export v0.5.2

@vaulthunt3r vaulthunt3r released this 29 Sep 06:31
46a9ac8

Warning

Do not use 0.5.2 for new exports. Upgrade to 0.5.3 and reload ChatGPT.
0.5.2 can include messages from another ChatGPT conversation even with the correct title and source URL. Check important previous exports before sharing; re-export affected files and review any copies already shared.
The collector searched the entire page without excluding hidden message trees or validating chat ownership. Retained markup from another chat could therefore be included. This mechanism was reproduced locally; VPN/DNS causality has not been established. See the 0.5.3 notes for the fix and validation.

Dialogue Export v0.5.2 — support for the new ChatGPT interface

Fixes “No messages found yet” on ChatGPT's newer interface, plus the scrolling problem that could leave long conversations stuck on the initially visible messages.

  • Recognizes both user questions and ChatGPT answers in the new layout.
  • Preserves message identities and order while older messages load during scrolling.
  • Supports hidden-overflow scroll containers and negative scroll offsets.
  • Reports an error when scrolling cannot proceed and restores the original offset/styles.
  • Retains support for the older ChatGPT interface and Google Gemini.
  • Adds no permissions, telemetry, or external requests.

Thanks to hexgf for the detailed reports, quick replies, and testing. They confirmed successful export of a 301-message chat; a quick review found it intact from beginning to end, though every message was not individually checked.

Validation also includes 50 passing automated tests and three headless Edge scrolling scenarios using local fixtures.

Installation

Download Dialogue-Export-v0.5.2-signed.xpi, signed by Mozilla for permanent installation in Firefox 142 or newer. Open about:addons, click the gear menu, choose Install Add-on From File, and select the XPI. Reload ChatGPT after updating.

For temporary installation, extract Dialogue-Export-v0.5.2.zip, open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, choose Load Temporary Add-on, and select manifest.json.

Dialogue-Export-v0.5.2-source.zip contains the full development sources and tests. SHA256SUMS.txt contains checksums for all three attached packages.

Optional timestamps can still be missing where the interface does not expose unambiguous metadata. Complex interactive content may not export exactly; verify the first and last messages in important conversations.

@vaulthunt3r vaulthunt3r released this 10 Sep 15:08

Dialogue Export v0.5.1 — message timestamps

You can now keep the original date and time of ChatGPT messages in your saved conversations. Thanks to the first community feature request in issue #1.

How to use it

  1. Open a ChatGPT conversation.
  2. Open Dialogue Export and expand Export options.
  3. Enable Include message timestamps, then export as usual.

The setting is off by default. Your choice is remembered.

TXT, Markdown, HTML, and PDF show dates in your local time zone. JSON stores UTC ISO dates for use in other tools. If ChatGPT does not provide a time, the message is still saved and the export explains how many dates were available. It never substitutes the date of export for the original message time.

This setting is currently available for ChatGPT only. Gemini exports continue to work as before. The conversation loading and scrolling algorithms are unchanged, and no new permissions or external requests were added.

Installation

  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.1-signed.xpi — Mozilla-signed package for permanent installation in Firefox 142 or later. Open about:addons, click the gear menu, choose Install Add-on From File, and select the XPI.
  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.1.zip — temporary installation. Extract the ZIP, open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, choose Load Temporary Add-on, and select manifest.json.
  • Source code — the repository snapshot for this release.

If you are upgrading from v0.2.0, this release also includes the earlier long-conversation loading fixes, Gemini support, and the redesigned v0.5.0 interface. Check the first and last messages when re-exporting important older conversations.

Dialogue Export v0.5.0

Choose a tag to compare

@vaulthunt3r vaulthunt3r released this 10 Sep 15:07

Dialogue Export v0.5.0

A clearer interface for saving ChatGPT and Google Gemini conversations in Firefox.

What changed

  • Pick TXT, Markdown, HTML, JSON, or PDF, then press one clearly labelled Export button.
  • Your last format and export options are remembered.
  • Preview the filename and optionally add today's date.
  • Selection controls appear in Selected mode, with a live count, Clear, and Escape to finish choosing.
  • Reopen the popup to see the current stage, elapsed time, and collected-message count.
  • Retry a failed connection from the popup without closing and reopening it.
  • Improved light/dark themes, keyboard navigation, and suggested PDF filenames.

The loading and scrolling routines are the same as v0.4.2. Processing stays local, with no analytics or telemetry.

Upgrading from v0.2.0? That version could export only the loaded portion of a long ChatGPT conversation. The loading fix introduced in v0.4.2 is included here. Re-export important old conversations and check their first and last messages.

Which file should I download?

  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.0-signed.xpi — recommended. Signed by Mozilla for permanent installation in Firefox 142 or later. Open about:addons, select the gear menu, choose Install Add-on From File, and select the XPI.
  • Dialogue-Export-v0.5.0.zip — temporary installation and local testing. Extract it, open about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox, choose Load Temporary Add-on, and select manifest.json.
  • Source code — the repository snapshot for this release, including documentation and development tests.

For PDF, the extension prepares a print page. Choose Save as PDF, then select Firefox's PDF destination.

Dialogue Export v0.4.2

Choose a tag to compare

@vaulthunt3r vaulthunt3r released this 29 Aug 18:28
8e3676e

Important update

Dialogue Export v0.4.2 fixes incomplete exports of long ChatGPT conversations.

The previous public version could save only the part of a long conversation that was currently loaded on the page. The download still completed normally, so missing messages were not always obvious.

Version 0.4.2 now loads earlier conversation sections and collects the conversation from beginning to end before creating the file.

Users of v0.2.0 should update before exporting long conversations.

What's new

  • Added support for ordinary Google Gemini conversations.
  • Added All messages and Selected export modes.
  • Added message selection directly on the conversation page.
  • Export continues after the extension popup is closed.
  • Added progress on the page and Firefox toolbar icon.
  • Added automatic light and dark themes.
  • Added working link preservation in TXT and Markdown.
  • Removed redundant Gemini interface labels from exported conversations.
  • Cleaned ChatGPT and Google Gemini suffixes from filenames.
  • Improved PDF export and background downloads.

Supported formats

  • TXT
  • Markdown
  • HTML
  • JSON
  • PDF
