Robustness fixes

  • Deeply nested Markdown no longer exhausts memory. Every preview line repeats the bars and markers of its quotes and lists; a small file with thousands of nested > produced hundreds of megabytes of text. Prefixes are now drawn only up to half the window width; deeper levels are shown without them.
  • Long lines render in linear time. A 2 MB line (for example minified JSON in a code block, or a long word without spaces) took several seconds; it now takes milliseconds.
  • Files over 64 MB are refused with the "cannot read" message instead of risking an out-of-memory failure.
  • The temporary file path no longer depends on an uninitialised buffer when Windows cannot report the temp folder.

The preview of ordinary documents is unchanged.

Install

Copy the MarkFar folder into %APPDATA%\Far Manager\Profile\Plugins with Far closed and start Far. See INSTALL.txt for details.

Provided as is, without warranty, under the 0BSD license.

Nested code in Markdown examples

A markdown code block that shows Markdown source with fenced code inside (for example a ```python block within markdown ````) now colours the inner code by its language, through Colorer, instead of one colour for the whole block. Languages and aliases are the same as for ordinary code blocks.

The new scheme is read by Colorer when Far starts: restart Far after updating.

Install without manual steps

Copy the MarkFar folder into %APPDATA%\Far Manager\Profile\Plugins with Far closed and start Far. That is all:

  • F3 on a .md / .markdown file in a file panel opens the preview. MarkFar adds an in-memory macro at start; nothing is written to your profile. Alt+F3 still opens Far's viewer.
  • Code blocks are coloured by Colorer. MarkFar registers its markfar.hrc: if Colorer's "Custom schemas folder (hrc)" is empty, it points it at the plugin's hrc folder; if it already names another folder, it copies markfar.hrc there.

Both are settings (F9 → Options → Plugins configuration → MarkFar), on by default; switching one off undoes it.

Upgrading from 0.1.x: delete the *.md file association and the Colorer path you added by hand, or leave them — they do no harm.

Provided as is, without warranty, under the 0BSD license.

@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Oct 14:10

Installation notes updated; no changes to the plugin itself.

  • The plugin folder can go either into %APPDATA%\Far Manager\Profile\Plugins or into the Plugins folder of the Far installation (for example C:\APP\Far3\Plugins).
  • The first start after installation takes a few seconds longer: Colorer reloads its schemes once ("Reloading schema library...").

Both are also in INSTALL.txt inside the zip (English, Russian, Lithuanian).

MarkFar 0.1.2

@github-actions github-actions released this 07 Oct 12:18

First public release of MarkFar, a Markdown preview plugin for Far Manager 3 (x64).

Features

  • Rendered Markdown in a Far editor window: headings, bold, italic, strike-out, lists and task lists, quotes, admonitions (> [!NOTE]), tables, links with their URLs, images as alt text and path, footnotes, [[wiki-links]], ==highlight==, YAML front matter.
  • Word wrap to the window width with hanging indents; wrapped code lines are marked with »; table cells wrap inside their columns. F2 toggles wrap; resizing the window re-renders.
  • Code blocks coloured by Colorer in its languages (C#, SQL, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, JSON, XML/HTML, YAML, PowerShell, shell, C/C++, Java, CSS, batch, diff, Go, Markdown).
  • F6 switches between the preview and the file in Far's editor; the preview shows unsaved changes, and saving or closing the source updates it.
  • Ctrl+Down / Ctrl+Up jump between headings.
  • Settings: default word wrap, link URLs, F6 in Markdown editors.
  • Help and interface in English, Russian and Lithuanian.
  • One DLL, no runtime dependencies besides Windows.

Install

Unpack the zip into %APPDATA%\Far Manager\Profile\Plugins with Far closed, then start Far. Optional steps for code colouring and F3 on .md files are in the README.

Provided as is, without warranty, under the 0BSD license.
