Ventic 0.5.0

Cast a film to another screen. Ventic on one device can hand what you are watching to Ventic on another one on the same Wi-Fi — the film streams from the machine that already has it, so nothing is downloaded twice, and there is no account, no server and no relay in between. The receiving screen shows a four-digit code, and that is the whole setup.

Live TV. Paste an M3U playlist under Settings → Sources and its channels get their own page, with search and categories. Any IPTV subscription's link works, so does a public channel index, and so does an Xtream get.php address. The app still ships with no channels and suggests none.

Also new

  • Play a file you already own. Pick it from disk on any title and it plays like anything else — progress, history, favourites and the watchlist all work. No folder to configure and nothing scanning your drive.
  • Preferred quality under Settings → Sources. A preference, not a filter: ask for 4K and a title without one still plays the best 1080p. A copy far lighter than the rest of its own tier, or with too thin a swarm to keep up, is ranked as the tier below — that is the 1080p that is 1080p by label alone. Direct links from debrid sources get the same treatment, and still start instantly with nothing written to disk.
  • Volume levelling and dialogue boost in Settings → Audio, on desktop and Android alike, with a per-film override in the player's Audio panel for the one film in twenty whose dialogue is inaudible.
  • Cast and crew pages — open an actor or director and see everything else they were in.
  • Skip this version on the update prompt, and an update panel that says what it can and cannot do on this install.

Fixes

  • The screen no longer blanks or the machine suspends mid-film on Linux and macOS. Pausing lets it sleep again, as it should.
  • Video plays again in a Wayland session — mpv is asked for X11 output, the only one that can be embedded in our window.
  • Browse filters no longer stretch halfway across a wide window.
  • Tooltips on the sidebar, and every string in all 72 languages is translated.
