New Features

Shorts have their own tab and their own player now, instead of opening as regular videos. Swipe up and down, like, read the comments, share. The next one is loaded before you get to it, so it starts on video and not on a still frame. Tap a short in subscriptions, on a channel or in search and you swipe through that list first, then the app keeps going with recommendations. Don't want it? Settings → Shorts, turn it off and the tab is gone without a restart (#34)
Pick the screen the app opens on. Settings → Appearance → Default Screen
Settings are grouped into sections instead of one long scroll
Four app icons — Light, Dark, Clear Light and Clear Dark — or leave it on Auto to follow the system theme (#31). Settings → Appearance
When a video ends you get replay, previous and next. Cancel the autoplay countdown and you get replay too, instead of a dead screen (#26)

Scrolling doesn't stutter after loading more videos. Every thumbnail was being decoded on all cores at once and left nothing for the interface. On an iPad mini 2 this was the worst of it
Thumbnails show up much sooner. They used to be asked for all at once, fight over the connection and then land together a few seconds later. Now they come in as you read the page
The next page doesn't wait for avatars. Channel info is fetched a few at a time instead of a hundred at once, and it's kept for a month now, not a day
Subscriptions and Library open without a spinner — they load in the background once the home feed is done
Videos resume where you actually left off. The position is saved on the device, so reopening a video you just watched no longer drops you where YouTube last knew you were
The two 10-second buttons are previous and next now
Hide Status Bar in Fullscreen moved from Appearance to Playback, where it belongs

Zoom to Fill blew the picture up way past the point where it fills the screen
A video watched to the end no longer reopens at the very end
