DesktopTools 1.2.7
DesktopTools 1.2.7
This update adds step-by-step screenshot guides, recording markers and local screenshot privacy review, and improves the recorder, notes, video editor, and app appearance.
-
Build a numbered guide from recent captures or a screenshot folder. Open one image in the annotation editor before adding it, or edit an existing step; crop, draw, add text, and cover private details without changing the source. The picker has a resizable two-column layout; drag steps to reorder them, choose one to six steps per row, and export a high-resolution PNG with a light, dark, or custom background.
-
Notes open as ordinary windows by default. An Always on top option in Notes settings controls both the notes library and floating notes. Note-to-window attachment is no longer available; existing notes remain saved.
-
Add markers during a recording, then find them on the video editor timeline. Hover a marker to see its number and time, or select it to seek there.
-
The video editor has a resizable settings pane, audio volume and export quality controls, preview playback speed, and full-resolution PNG frame export. Playback speed affects the preview only.
-
The larger recorder setup gives the source and audio controls more room. Hardware encoding uses the timestamps of arriving frames instead of padding high-FPS output with repeated frames. The requested FPS remains a target, limited by display refresh, capture throughput, and encoder performance.
-
The dark app surface defaults to
#060606. Feature windows follow the selected default or custom app background. Opening the video editor no longer crashes while arranging its header. -
Text tools offer 20 offline translation languages. English–Russian remains bundled; download other checksum-verified packs once, then translate without a connection. Compatible Windows languages appear first. Pairs without a direct model translate through English. OCR reads installed Windows recognizers, matches regional language tags, and can refresh after language-pack changes.
-
Auto Redact Screenshot suggests areas containing possible email addresses, phone numbers, IP addresses, local paths, keys/tokens and context-labelled identifiers using local Windows OCR. Use Check screenshot in the screenshot editor, image tools or guide editor, then Hide all found in one undoable action or select individual numbered areas. Keep areas visible or draw and resize covers manually. The compact panel uses DesktopTools controls and keeps results visible in short windows. Solid covers are the default; blur and pixelation provide weaker hiding. Undo and Original/Edited comparison preserve the source image.
-
Sensitive-data OCR enlarges bounded tiles to read small text without changing source coordinates. When a non-English recognizer is selected, installed English OCR also checks email addresses and machine data; intersecting results are merged. This improves lists where OCR previously dropped domain punctuation in small addresses. Recognizer accuracy still varies with image quality.
-
Privacy review handles slashed-zero OCR substitutions in IP addresses and keys, and recognizes Russian API-ключ: labels and labelled passwords. The manual-cover, detection-options and drawing-options buttons have clearer theme-aware outlines.
-
Screenshot privacy review now keeps complete split logins, phone numbers, paths and labelled identifiers inside their suggested covers. An additional reading improves tiny text, and installed English/app-language OCR checks mixed labels. The generated 25-value sample covers emails, phones, IPv4/IPv6, paths, keys/tokens, passwords, logins, account IDs and serials at both tested font sizes.
-
Enable Check screenshots before copying or saving in Capture settings to review new screenshots before output. This is off by default. Pending captures do not enter the clipboard or capture history; closing the review cancels output. Unresolved suggestions, failed scans and subsequent edits require review, another scan or an explicit skip. Only a successful Copy or Save publishes the reviewed image. OCR and pattern matching may miss sensitive data, so inspect the result before sharing. No screenshot or recognized text is uploaded or stored as an OCR transcript.
-
Privacy review now recognizes two-column tables without colons, including User ID, Пароль and numbered nickname labels. Aligned neighbouring rows link labels to their values even when Windows OCR separates the columns or value fragments into different lines. Suggested covers include the full value; unrelated distant columns and ordinary password advice remain excluded in the tested cases.
-
Lists of standalone nickname-like identifiers are also suggested without labels, including mixed-case numeric names and underscore handles. Adjacent and overlapping OCR fragments retain complete bounds across different font sizes. Two aligned rows corroborate a list; recognized labels and a separate table-label column are excluded. Small monospace telephone readings also handle a measured
e-for-zero substitution, while date validation remains active. -
Screenshot privacy review now suggests complex password-like values inside prose and lists, rather than requiring a
Password:field. Nearby password wording and a strong next-row continuation can recover a wrapped value as separate covers. IPv4 matching accepts sentence-ending punctuation and measured OCR digit substitutions; prefixed keys tolerate a measured5kreading ofsk. Detached password punctuation retains the surrounding value bounds. Ordinary URLs and password-policy advice are excluded by regression tests, although suggestions remain approximate. -
For very small text, privacy OCR also checks narrow rows at three-times size, with a bounded tile/word budget and cancellation. This recovers words discarded by Windows OCR on a mixed-size page. It does not recover every damaged glyph: unreadable octets are not silently accepted as IP addresses. Review the highlighted regions and add manual covers for missed data.
-
Privacy review now recovers prefixed keys wrapped across rows and checks small inline gaps where Windows OCR omitted a value. Covers stay on the relevant rows, and a telephone beside an IP remains detectable. The latest mixed-font prose sample covers all 22 values across 25 physical pieces under English and Russian OCR; the observed ordinary-word false positives are excluded. Very small or damaged text can still require manual covers.
-
Full-monitor privacy checks now skip empty horizontal margins during small-text recovery instead of exhausting the supplemental OCR budget. Trailing words missed by the first reading remain eligible for recovery. Wrapped keys/passwords use local row geometry, and dotted password-like values are recognized. OCR remains approximate; review the suggested covers.
-
The screenshot editor initially opens centered at 75% of the monitor's working-area width and height. You can resize it normally; the screenshot resolution stays unchanged.
-
Full-screen privacy review now follows wrapped keys within their text column even when browser navigation appears between the rows. It also keeps a wrapped password's numeric tail inside a separate suggested cover. Cross-line recovery excludes ordinary URL fragments and limits nearby-row search work.
Desktop Automation preview
-
Build workflows with a searchable action library, recording, templates, undo and separate run settings. Choose windows and shortcuts directly; move or duplicate complete loops and conditional branches. Test individual actions and import/export local JSON workflows.
-
Run manually, by shortcut, at intervals, when a window appears, daily at a local time, or when DesktopTools starts. Automatic triggers require enabling and saving, and run while DesktopTools is open. Imports are disarmed.
-
New actions wait for a window or pixel color, set/paste clipboard text, and minimize, maximize or restore windows. Set the delay between actions; stop with Esc. After opening an app, add Focus window before typing or clicking.
-
Existing automation files upgrade to schema 2 without losing workflows; earlier preview binaries cannot edit the newer schema. Scrolling Screenshot is not included.
-
Action rows expose move, copy and delete icons; settings open in a separate dialog with Cancel/Save and visible validation. Searchable icon action cards, colored message banners and a content-sized run/recording HUD follow the app theme.
-
Default and custom app backgrounds retain their original colors and solid tool surfaces. Utility windows fill the client area without gray footer gaps; localized HUD controls are no longer clipped.
-
Search and daily-time fields align placeholder text with the editable text. Action selection, row moves, dialogs and messages animate with the app animation preference. Closing an edited workflow now uses a localized DesktopTools Save / Don't save / Cancel prompt; failed saves keep the draft open with an inline error.
-
Interface refresh: clearer switches, labelled buttons, grouped recorder settings, value labels on editor sliders and animated tiles that follow the reduced-motion setting.
-
Floating notes show their own editable title in the header and give the rest of the window to the text. The "Saved on this device" line and the character count are gone; a message appears only if saving fails. Context menus and drop-downs no longer clip an edge or use a different font.
-
Pinned screenshots can be locked (right-click or Ctrl+L) so mouse clicks pass through them. A notice explains how to undo it, and the tray menu, the notice and the Capture tools page offer Unlock and Close.

DesktopTools 1.2.6
DesktopTools 1.2.6
This release improves region capture and screen recording, adds notes that can follow another application's window, and makes editing and setup easier to use.
- Smart Region Capture suggests an area under the pointer. Click the highlight to capture it, or drag to select any custom area. A fresh frozen screen suggests windows from its saved geometry; live selection can also suggest accessible panels, images, and video areas. An older frozen drawing frame keeps manual selection. The feature can be turned off in Region capture settings; selection stays local and offline.
- Floating notes can attach to an open window, follow its movement, hide while it is minimized, and reappear when it returns. Attachments are saved with notes and can be removed from the notes list.
- The screen recorder shows microphone and system-audio activity, offers a five-second test clip, checks destination free space, and reports the frame rate stored in a completed MP4. Device activity and file metadata do not guarantee audible audio or distinct captured frames; play the test clip to verify.
- Screenshot and image tools clearly switch between the original and edited copy. The video editor can return to its latest rendered preview after showing the original. Crop instructions are clearer across editors.
- Recorder audio meters now use the app's rounded, accent-colored track. The recorder HUD falls back to the primary display if Windows does not report a cursor position.
- The recorder setup window no longer stays above other apps, and its bottom Start/Pause/Stop panel remains one row high; the five-second test action is beside the audio settings.
- A News page shows repository announcements with an unread indicator and optional notifications. A security notice can highlight a verified stable update without installing or restarting automatically; the existing confirmation remains required.
- Pin window now changes only windows DesktopTools pinned itself. Already-on-top windows retain their own state, and a queued shortcut message from an older binding cannot trigger Pin window after shortcut settings change.
- Image tools and the video editor open maximized for a larger workspace. Both have maximize/restore controls, and standard resizable tool windows can be minimized.
- Setup has a clearer task summary, places Advanced options in the left rail when extra choices are available, and supports resizing from its lower-right corner. Install, update, repair, uninstall, and data-preservation choices remain available.
- The News page places refresh in its header and aligns announcement details with the cards, leaving more room for the announcements themselves.

Requires Windows 11 x64. Screen recording, offline translation and image background removal require the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 Redistributable; recording and video editing also depend on Windows Media Foundation. The installer is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may show a warning. Verify SHA256SUMS.txt against the downloaded files. Recording and remote-sharing behavior can vary by hardware and other apps; use the five-second test clip and check sharing visibility before relying on them.
DesktopTools 1.2.5
DesktopTools 1.2.5
This release makes tools easier to find and configure. Each feature now opens its own settings page, Settings search finds tools by name, category, description or shortcut, and Diagnostics shows native components, OCR languages and shortcut registration with links to relevant fixes.
- Screen recording, offline translation and image background removal explain when the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 runtime is missing. Other tools remain available.
- Home, Help, Shortcuts and Settings search now have clearer empty states, aligned text fields and accessible clear actions. Shortcut tabs and retry actions have updated icons, with smoother content transitions.
- The update notification uses a concise Update action. It still asks for confirmation before downloading and restarting, and preserves saved notes and settings.
- The installer and portable package include the latest interface and diagnostic fixes.

Requires Windows 11 x64. Screen recording, offline translation and image background removal require the Microsoft Visual C++ x64 Redistributable; recording and video editing also depend on Windows Media Foundation. The installer can direct you to Microsoft's official runtime download when needed. This release is unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may display a warning.
DesktopTools 1.2.4
DesktopTools 1.2.4
This patch fixes global shortcuts that could all stop working on a fresh installation when Windows or another application had already claimed one key combination.
- DesktopTools now activates every available shortcut independently at startup, even if one combination is unavailable.
- The Shortcuts page and first-run setup identify unavailable combinations. Close the conflicting application and select Retry shortcuts, or choose different keys.
- Added a read-only shortcut diagnostic script for checking enabled combinations after quitting DesktopTools from the tray.

DesktopTools 1.2.3
DesktopTools 1.2.3
This patch fixes background updates that could fail with “installation files are still in use” after DesktopTools had exited.
- Setup now leaves the old installation folder before waiting for DesktopTools to exit, so setup itself does not keep that folder locked during replacement.
- The installer retains its bounded retry for other short-lived file locks and leaves the previous installation in place if a separate process keeps files locked.
- GitHub Actions dependencies were refreshed after review.

DesktopTools 1.2.2
DesktopTools 1.2.2
This patch smooths update notifications and fixes installer language switching.
- Notifications animate when they appear and resize smoothly when their message or actions change. Update progress uses the DesktopTools accent color and rounded corners.
- The installer and uninstaller can switch languages while open without restarting or losing the selected uninstall data option. The language chooser has clearer spacing and offline flag icons.
- An older installer now offers Install older version under Advanced options, with an explicit warning. Notes and settings are retained, although settings from a newer app may not work in the older version.
- Update rollback retries brief file locks while restoring the previous installation. Persistent locks still produce an error rather than replacing files unsafely.

DesktopTools 1.2.1
DesktopTools 1.2.1
This patch improves background update reliability when Windows briefly holds an installation file open after DesktopTools exits.
- Setup retries the application-folder swap for a short, bounded period when Windows reports a sharing or access lock. If the lock persists, the update leaves the previous installation in place and reports a clearer error.
- The installer and portable build otherwise contain the 1.2.0 recorder, image-editor, and tray improvements.

DesktopTools 1.2.0
DesktopTools 1.2.0
This release makes the recorder and tray controls easier to use and removes an unnecessary image-editor setup choice.
- The recorder now has a clearer source preview with display, window, and region cues. Recording quality, target FPS, and hardware acceleration sit together, with the timer and controls in a compact panel below them.
- The image editor opens its guide directly. Its annotation toolbar uses a consistent position instead of asking new users to choose between A and B.
- Right-clicking the tray icon opens a DesktopTools-styled menu with shortcuts to the main window, recorder, pinned screenshot, and quick actions.
- The installer language picker has a clearer layout.

DesktopTools 1.1.1
DesktopTools 1.1.1
This patch fixes update retries and makes update notifications easier to use.
- A retry no longer replaces an installer file that Windows still has open. Each verified setup download gets its own staging location.
- Clicking an update notification now shows the restart and unsaved-work confirmation inside that notification. Confirming starts the download and setup handoff without opening a separate app dialog.
- Portable copies wait until DesktopTools has closed before opening setup.
- Notifications remain visible while the pointer is over their window, including when WPF does not report mouse-over for a non-activating notification.
- Failed scheduled update checks stay silent and preserve the previous status. Manual checks still report errors.

DesktopTools 1.1.0
DesktopTools 1.1.0
This update makes DesktopTools easier to use in your Windows language and clarifies recording and update controls. Existing notes, settings and recordings are preserved during an update.
What's new
- On a fresh install, setup and the app start in the supported language closest to your Windows display language. Setup includes a language picker; changing the app language later restarts it to apply the selection throughout the interface.
- Setup, first-run screens and additional interface messages have expanded translations for German, Spanish, French and Russian.
- The recorder places its source and preview controls together and keeps start, pause, stop, timer and status in a dedicated control area.
- The Updates page shows installed and available versions more clearly. Automatic checks can now run every 15 or 30 minutes, or every 2 or 3 hours, alongside the existing intervals.
- Installer text, recording dependency guidance and other controls have clearer spacing and focus behavior.

DesktopTools-1.1.0-win-x64-setup.exe— recommended per-user installer.DesktopTools-1.1.0-win-x64-portable.zip— self-contained portable build.
Windows 11 x64 is required. Screen recording also requires Microsoft Visual C++ x64 Redistributable and Windows Media Foundation; setup offers the official Microsoft download page if the Visual C++ runtime is missing. The binaries are unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may prompt. Compare your download with SHA256SUMS.txt on this release.
Capture exclusion depends on the receiving application's capture method. Mixed-DPI hardware, long recordings and real-device audio synchronization still need broader testing; see compatibility notes.
