Dirigent Demo

Dirigent is a new lightweight cluster manager catered for FaaS. This document shows how you can set up a small Dirigent cluster on Cloudlab and run a demo.

Cluster topology

To run the basic experiment you need an 8-node xl170 Cloudlab cluster. These nodes will be used for the following purposes.

  • 1 node for the load generator
  • 1 node for the control plane
  • 1 node for the data plane
  • 5 worker nodes

Deployment

To deploy Dirigent on your cluster, execute the following steps.

  • Clone Dirigent locally by running git clone https://github.com/eth-easl/dirigent/.
  • Execute the setup script locally ./scripts/remote_install.sh $NODE_LIST.
  • Execute the cluster (re)start script locally ./scripts/remote_start_cluster.sh $NODE_LIST.

Variable $NODE_LIST should contain the SSH addresses of all nodes in the following format user@node0.cloudlab.us user@node1.cloudlab.us user@node2.cloudlab.us.

Running an experiment

  • SSH into the node with the load generator - always node0 when running the scripts above.
  • Choose the load generator configuration file from ~/invitro/cmd on node0.
  • Run the load generator by executing go run cmd/loader.go --config cmd/config_dirigent_rps.json.
