Shantae Recomp v0.1.18
Two refinements: the whip works while crawling through tight corridors, and the bottom UI makes room for itself instead of hiding or pushing away the world.
Fixed
- Whipping while crawling under a low ceiling. In a corridor too low to stand in (the first labyrinth has many), B while crawling did nothing; only a whip from a crouch held still came out. The original's crawl skips its B test there entirely (06:64CF), while its crouch keeps it. With Smoother movement on, B now whips the moment you press it while crawling there, as everywhere else. With Slide you keep moving a pixel a frame and carry on into the crawl; with Cancel, B and a direction crawl on; B with no direction whips on the spot.
Changed
- Bottom UI → World replaces Dialogue box: Raises the world. Raising the world kept the floor in view but pushed the sky and ceilings off the top, and the status bar itself still hid the room's last rows (the ground under the grass at the opening's bridge, for one). With Fits above it (the default) the whole room stays above the bottom UI at whatever size you picked, from the sky down to the ground the original's status bar hides:
- Rooms the view zooms to fit their full height above the status bar. Rows under the bar that hold nothing of the room (a picture that ends above it, or rows of a single color, like the black under Risky's hold) stay hidden.
- While a dialogue box is up, the world zooms out just enough to keep everything it showed above the box, easing like the room zoom, and back in when it closes. The black margin around the picture is used first, so with Pixel Perfect and the default 256×240 view the scale usually doesn't change at all; Pixel Perfect only steps to a smaller whole scale when the box would cover more than a tile of the world.
- In large areas shown at the view's own scale, a status bar larger than 1x gets its room too.
- Under it, as original lays the bottom UI over the world, as the original does. If you had set the old option to Covers the floor, that carries over.
The defaults are otherwise unchanged: the expanded view is off until you turn it on, and 256×240 when you do. Settings and save states from earlier versions load as they are.
Checked on Windows:
- In the user's state1 (the mayor's "Stay put!", 1920×1080 view, Fill, bottom UI 2x) the box now zooms the town out so the whole tower and sky stay in view, where the old raise cut 35 rows off the top. At the opening's bridge (debug grid I0) the purple ground under the grass is above the status bar.
- A new check,
tools/check_ui_fit.py, loads every scene of WayForward's debug grid in a hidden window, as players see it, with three setups: 1920×1080 Aspect Fit at 2x, 256×240 Pixel Perfect at 1x, and 426×240 Aspect Fit on Auto. In play and with a dialogue box up, the floor is above the bottom UI and the rows play showed stay above the box (within a tile with Pixel Perfect). - In the user's state2, and in a new labyrinth corridor state made from a cold boot, B while crawling whips at once in every whip mode. The moveset check covers the press with and without a direction, and with and without Reduce input lag.
- The moveset, forms, dance, text, towns and view checks pass. With the features off, the moves and forms match v0.1.17 frame for frame. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here (Windows x64 and x86) and on Linux in WSL (x86_64, also on Debian 10, and aarch64).
Not checked: playing on Linux and on real ARM hardware (they run the same code).

How to play
- Download the file for your system and extract it to a folder you can write to (not Program Files). The AppImage needs no extracting: mark it executable and run it.
- Run
shantae.exe(Windows) orshantae(Linux). - Pick your ROM in the launcher and press PLAY.
Updating from an earlier version: your settings and saves are in the old folder (beside the AppImage, for the AppImage). Put the new AppImage where the old one was, or copy them into the new folder. Your save states load as before.
On Windows, SmartScreen may say it protected your PC from an unrecognized app: click More info, then Run anyway.
⚠️ Bring your own ROM
No game data is included. You need your own Shantae (USA) Game Boy Color ROM, the No-Intro dump: SHA-256 1b92e22d5510c51bab97d23074e4aad7464d93eb15f7596ef7da0a5efa27a19d (CRC32 E994B59B). The launcher reads ROM verified for it and starts no other file. Shantae's other releases (World, Switch, Limited Run Games) are different ROMs and are not supported yet.
Controls
Keyboard: arrows or WASD to move, Z = A, X = B, Enter = Start, Backspace = Select. Hold Tab to fast-forward, hold R to rewind, F5/F8 save/load a state, P pauses and O advances a frame, Esc opens the menu. Controllers work out of the box, and everything can be rebound.
Requirements
Windows 10/11 with a Direct3D 11 graphics driver, or Linux with OpenGL.
Licensed under PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0; the bundled libraries keep their own licenses (THIRD-PARTY-LICENSES.md in each download). Built on gbrecompiled, recomp-ui and librashader. Shantae Recomp v0.1.17
The expanded view's height now keeps the shape you chose, and the launcher gets a Zoom choice: the original's zoom with more of the world to either side is now one pick away.
Added
- Zoom (Mods → Expanded view, right under Aspect ratio). Original is 144 tall like the original screen: the game is as large on screen as in the original and the view only adds to the sides, dialogue and towns included (16:9 is 256×144). Default is 240 tall, showing more above and below with everything smaller. Custom is any other height. Each choice shows the size it gives. The title screen and menus always show the original picture, so the zoom shows once play starts.
Fixed
- Height changed the shape. Setting Height after an aspect ratio kept the width: 16:9 and then 144 gave 426×144, which a 16:9 screen shows no larger than the default 256×240, so gameplay still zoomed out. Height now keeps a preset's shape (16:9 at 144 is 256×144) in the launcher and in Esc → Shantae. Changing Width still makes the shape custom.
- Original height (144) did nothing in Esc → Shantae when the view was already 144 tall in a custom shape such as 426×144. It now gives a custom size your monitor's shape (256×144 on a 16:9 screen, 344×144 on a 3440×1440 one); a preset keeps its own. If your view is stuck at a size like 426×144, pick Zoom → Original in the launcher, or press this button.
The defaults are unchanged: the expanded view is off until you turn it on, and 256×240 when you do. Settings from earlier versions load as they are.
Checked on Windows, the launcher in a settings folder of its own: from 16:9 at 426×240, Zoom → Original gives 256×144 and stays 16:9; one step of Height gives 424×239 (v0.1.16 gave 426×239); a saved 426×144 shows Zoom as Custom (426 x 144), and Original turns it into 256×144. In the running game, Esc → Shantae → Original height turns 426×144 into 256×144 on a 1920×1080 screen (from the monitor's shape, not the 1704×576 window's), and Height steps keep 16:9 (257×145). The view check covers both rules for every preset and several monitor shapes, including that Original gives the same size when chosen again. Nothing else in the game changed: the startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here (Windows x64 and x86) and on Linux in WSL (x86_64, also on Debian 10, and aarch64). Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code).

Shantae Recomp v0.1.16
The expanded view's status bar, dialogue boxes and towns' name panels now have a size of their own, dialogue stays in the wide picture instead of zooming in and out, towns are shown wide, the room zoom keeps the shape you chose, and a new option lets A run dialogue to its end at once.
Added
- Instant text (a new Gameplay option on the Mods page and in Esc → Shantae, on by default). Press A while dialogue is printing and it runs to the end at once, every box of it, exactly as holding B would a letter at a time: the box shows the text's last lines, the arrow blinks, and B carries on. An A at a box that is waiting for B goes on from there the same way. B still speeds text up and turns boxes, A does nothing else in dialogue, and off plays as the original.
- Bottom UI size (Expanded view → Bottom UI). The status bar, dialogue boxes and the towns' name panels: 1x (the default) with the view's own pixels, 2x–8x larger, or Auto as large as in the original picture, whatever the view's size. Its size on screen stays the same when a room zooms in. Any size other than the picture's own is drawn as a layer of its own through the shader preset, so an LCD grid or scanlines work per UI pixel, and the world is laid out above it so the room's floor stays in view.
- Dialogue in the wide picture. A dialogue box used to switch the screen to the original 160×144 picture, zooming in every time someone spoke and back out after. It now sits at the bottom of the wide picture like the status bar, at the bottom UI's size.
- Dialogue box: Raises the world (Expanded view → Bottom UI, the default). Standing at the bottom of a large area, a dialogue box (and its black, which runs across the whole view) covered the floor and Shantae; the world now eases up until the floor clears the box and back down when it closes. Covers the floor leaves it as the original.
- Towns are shown wide. They kept the original 160×144 picture; now the street wraps around like the town's camera, the townsfolk walk in from either side, and the name panel is at the bottom with the street right on it, as in the original. With the room zoom on, the town fills the screen above its panel (6.7× with the bottom UI on Auto, 8.6× at 2x, on a 1080p screen). Towns keep the original object activation and table, so every door, label and entrance is where the original has it.
- Original height (144) in Esc → Shantae sets the view to the original's height for the current shape: the original's zoom with more of the world to either side (16:9 is then 256×144).
Fixed
- Whole room zoomed all the way in in any area larger than the view, to the original's scale. It now leaves such an area at the view's own scale and only zooms where a side of the room fits.
- The room zoom took the monitor's shape. A small room in an NES 16:15 view (or any shape other than the screen's) was zoomed to fill the monitor; it now fills the view's own shape, between bars.
- The room zoom could cut off the floor. Rooms are now fitted to the space above the bottom UI at its size, with the room's own rows under the status bar beneath it.
All of the view's changes come with the expanded view (off by default); the original view is unchanged. Instant text works in either.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds): Shantae's remark as she lands in debug scene 3C, a text of many boxes that takes 284 frames with B held, is at its end one frame after A, from the middle of its first box and from its first wait for B, with the box and the text exactly as holding B leaves them and Shantae where she stood, and the frames after B match too; with the option off, A does nothing to it. From the save at the mayor's "Stay put!" (1920×1080 view, bottom UI at 2x) the world rises above the dialogue box on the first pass; it rose only after a rewind in the first build of these changes. All five towns, walked and run around and through every door, play frame for frame the same as the original, with the original picture matching inside the wide one; each one's street rests on its panel at 2x, Auto and with Pixel Perfect. An NES view fills its 16:15 frame with a small arena (5.27×) and stays as it is in a large area; Whole room leaves a large area at the view's scale; the bottom UI at 2x of a 1920×1080 view stays 2 screen pixels a pixel in a corridor zoomed to 7×. With everything set to the original, Shantae's moves, all five forms and the dance play frame for frame the same as v0.1.15 (324, 1,844 and 298 frames), the spawner budgets pass, and the startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL (x86_64, also on Debian 10, and aarch64). Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code).

Shantae Recomp v0.1.15
Every transformation now moves as freely as Shantae: the elephant charges whenever you press B and moves right after a stomp, the spider runs and climbs webs on your terms, and climbing is faster for everyone.
Added
- Charges you can steer. The elephant's charge (B) and the tinkerbat's (Down and B) used to run until they stopped on their own. Now pressing B again charges again at full speed, A jumps out of it, and a charge goes the way the D-pad is held, so B with the other direction reverses a charge mid-run (and from standing or walking it no longer charges the way she happened to face). The tinkerbat can also charge with Down and B while walking, running or landing, so she breaks what she is pushing into, such as the orange pillar on the beach.
- The elephant's turn, landing and stomp take your buttons. Turning around, she ignored B for the turn's short animation; now B charges and A jumps the way she is turning. B also charges from her landing. The stomp (landing with Down held) used to hold her for 40 frames; now she can walk, turn, charge or jump from the very next frame after it hits, and the full stomp animation still plays if you press nothing.
- The spider runs. Holding B she walks at two pixels a frame, with her legs moving twice as fast (in the air too, with Air speed), and with Whip on the move she keeps moving while she shoots instead of stopping for each shot.
- Webs on your terms (spider and tinkerbat). A jump in front of a climbable web used to stick her to it at once. Now it is a normal jump; press A in the air, from inside the web or from a jump that started outside it, to take hold. On the web, A jumps off it, and A again takes hold.
- Faster climbing with B. The monkey and the tinkerbat climb walls, and the spider and the tinkerbat climb webs, at twice the speed while B is held, with the climbing animation to match.
- The monkey's air claw keeps the jump's speed: run speed with B held, walk speed without (it used to keep whatever speed she had when it was pressed).
Fixed
- The tinkerbat now fits wherever the monkey fits. Since v0.1.12 she shrank to the monkey's height only near certain gaps, which missed the 16-pixel pipe maze above the beach; she now always has the monkey's size for walls and floors, so she climbs into those pipes and up their shafts, as well as the ice tower's hidden passage.
- The spider's web shot vanished mid-air in the expanded view. It only lives half a second, about as far as the original screen reaches ahead of her. With the expanded view on it now flies until it leaves the picture (in the original view nothing changes).
All of these except the last come under Smoother movement → Transformations (on by default); with it set to Original the forms play exactly like the original. The shot change comes with the expanded view.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds) from saves made with the game's debug mode (the desert pit, the ice tower ledge, the beach and a web in the forest), each beside the original moves: a second B during a charge charges again at full speed and A jumps out of it; B with Left held charges left from standing and from a charge going right, for the elephant and the tinkerbat; the tinkerbat walking into the pillar breaks it with two Down and B charges and walks on once it has crumbled; B and A during the elephant's turn charge and jump the way she turns, B on her landing's first, 11th and 26th frames charges, and on the frame after a stomp's hit Right walks, B charges and A jumps, while Down alone plays its 40 frames; a jump in front of a web stays a jump, A in the air takes hold, A on the web jumps off and A again takes hold, for the spider and the tinkerbat, with and without Reduce input lag; climbing walls (monkey, tinkerbat) and webs (spider, tinkerbat) with B is two pixels a frame; the spider walks two pixels a frame with B and keeps moving through a shot whose web still flies; the monkey's air claw goes at run speed with B and walk speed without; the tinkerbat climbs into the pipe maze and up its shaft, and still reaches the ice tower's hidden passage; the spider's shot flies to the room's edge in a 426×240 view and lives its usual 29 frames in the original view. In each case the original moves drop the presses, hold her, stick to the web or climb past the gap; v0.1.14 still had them for everything here except the tinkerbat's size, where its shrinking missed the pipe maze. The earlier tests for the monkey, the harpy, the tinkerbat, Shantae and the dance pass, and with everything set to the original, all five forms (1,844 frames through attacks, charges, turns, stomps, shots, climbs and webs), Shantae and the dance play frame for frame the same as v0.1.14. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL. Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code).

Shantae Recomp v0.1.14
Select now starts a dance the moment Shantae lands, the same way her hair whip does since v0.1.13.
Fixed
- No dance right after landing. After a jump straight up, pressing Select as she landed did nothing for 25 frames (almost half a second), for the same reason the whip didn't before v0.1.13: her landing listens for A, a direction or Down, but not Select. Now Select starts the dance from the frame she lands, exactly as from standing, so the steps can follow right away. Pressed on the same frame as A or B, it gives way to them as it does when standing: A jumps, B whips. Neither the dance nor the whip starts while the game is holding her controls (in a conversation or a scene), as when standing.
This comes under Smoother movement; with it off the game plays exactly like the original.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds) from the desert save made with the game's debug mode: Select pressed on the landing frame or any of the 24 after it starts the dance, frame for frame the same as from standing, with and without Reduce input lag, and Down then Right from there turns her into the monkey, where v0.1.13 dropped every one of those presses; this new test fails on v0.1.13. B on those frames still whips as in v0.1.13. With everything set to the original, Shantae, the monkey, the harpy, the tinkerbat and the dance play frame for frame the same as v0.1.13, and the earlier tests pass as before. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL. Not changed: a B or Select pressed on the very frame she lands while holding a direction is still lost, as in the original (she goes straight into her walk or run). Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code).

Shantae Recomp v0.1.13
Shantae's hair whip comes out the moment she lands, and the blink after an animal transformation now starts when the silhouette ends.
Fixed
- No whip right after landing. After a jump straight up, pressing B as she landed did nothing for 25 frames (almost half a second): her landing listens for A, a direction or Down, but not B, and a press on the landing frame itself was overwritten by the landing. Now B whips from the frame she lands, the same whip as from standing, with its hit on the same frame. With Whip on the move set to Cancel, B with a direction runs, as it does when standing.
- The blink after transforming started too early. It began the moment the new form appeared, so most of it went by during the black-and-white silhouette, where she is already safe, and it was nearly over when the colors came back. Now she stays safe through the silhouette as before, and the two-second blink starts on the frame the silhouette ends, the same way turning back into Shantae blinks from the moment she can move. Healing and warps are unchanged.
The first comes under Smoother movement, the second under Easier dancing → After transforming; with them off the game plays exactly like the original.
The test saves are now made from scratch with the game's own debug mode (the title-screen code and Start Debug Game, which has every dance learned), in the same desert pit and on the same ice tower ledge as before, so every transformation could be checked. On Windows (x64 and x86 builds): B pressed on the landing frame or any of the 24 after it now whips, hitting 12 frames later as from standing, where v0.1.12 dropped every one of those presses. Every transformation (monkey, elephant, harpy, spider and tinkerbat) is safe without a break from the dance through the silhouette, then blinks for two seconds starting on the frame its colors return, where v0.1.12 blinked from the start of the silhouette; healing still doesn't blink. A slider that reaches the new monkey can't hurt her until the blink ends, and turning back from every form (played on x64) still blinks from the moment she can move. Both new tests fail on v0.1.12. With everything set to the original, Shantae, the monkey, the harpy, the tinkerbat and the dance play frame for frame the same as v0.1.12, and the earlier tests pass as before. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL. Not changed: a B pressed on the very frame she lands while holding a direction is still lost, as in the original (she goes straight into her walk or run, which takes B from the next frame). Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code).

Shantae Recomp v0.1.12
The monkey's claw and the tinkerbat's sword slide whenever you press B, the harpy keeps flapping through her talon attack, and turning back into Shantae gives the same safe blink as transforming.
Fixed
- The monkey and the tinkerbat couldn't slide from a walk. Pressing B while walking made them run instead of attacking, so the claw or sword slide only came out from standing still, after a landing, or by luck with rapid presses. Holding B now runs as before, and each new press of B attacks while they keep moving, at running speed with B held and walking speed with a quick tap, standing or walking, just like Shantae's whip. The cause: their walk checks for running before it checks for an attack, and v0.1.11 counted a fresh press of B as running straight away.
- The harpy lost every A press during her talon attack. While flying, pressing A during a talon did nothing, so she sank until it ended. Now each A press flaps as usual, with the flap's sound, while the talon plays out with its full animation and hit. From her run on the ground, A during a talon lifts her off the same way.
- No safe moment after turning back into Shantae. After pressing Select to change back, she could be hurt the moment she could move again, while turning into an animal gives a two-second blink. Now she blinks and can't be hurt for two seconds from the moment she can move after turning back, too. The game already kept her safe while she changes back; the blink takes over from there.
The first two come under Smoother movement → Transformations, the third under Easier dancing → After transforming; with them off the game plays exactly like the original.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds) from the same desert save and ice tower ledge as v0.1.11. Pressing B while the monkey or tinkerbat walks now swings the claw or sword while they keep going, at running speed with B held and walking speed with a tap, where v0.1.11 just ran. The harpy, pressing A during a talon while flying, rises through it with a flap sound for each press and the talon still lands its hit, where v0.1.11 dropped the presses and she sank. A slider that reaches Shantae while she turns back from the monkey can't hurt her for two seconds after she can move, and she blinks, where v0.1.11 let it hit her straight away. Each of these new tests fails on v0.1.11. With everything set to the original, the monkey, the harpy, the tinkerbat, the dance and Shantae herself play frame for frame the same as v0.1.11, and the earlier tests pass as before. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL. Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code), turning back from the other forms (every form uses the same turn-back sequence as the monkey, but only the monkey was played), and the harpy's flapping talon against an enemy in the air.

Shantae Recomp v0.1.11
Dancing works like entering a code, every transformation gets a moment of safety, and the monkey, tinkerbat and harpy move as smoothly as Shantae.
New
- Easier dancing. After Select, every button press is a dance step straight away, so you can enter a dance as fast as you like (handy for warps). A wrong button is simply skipped and the next right one carries on, and Down starts over, since every dance begins with it. Each press still plays its own dance move. The original wants one step every eight beats, in rhythm, and a missed or doubled beat breaks the dance. Options on the Mods page and in Esc → Shantae: Dance steps (Quick or the original rhythm) and After transforming.
- A safe moment after transforming. When she turns into an animal she blinks and can't be hurt for two seconds from the moment she appears, just like after taking a hit. In the original she was only safe until the new form's entrance ended, with nothing to show it, so an enemy nearby could hit her straight away.
- The transformations move like Shantae (Smoother movement → Transformations):
- The monkey's claw and the tinkerbat's sword no longer stop them mid-run (16 and 13 frames standing still). They follow Whip on the move: attack while you keep moving, or with Cancel just run.
- Holding B runs at once, and their jumps follow Air speed: hold B for running speed in the air, even when jumping from a standstill.
- The harpy keeps her speed when her talon attack ends, instead of starting her run again from nothing.
- The tinkerbat squeezes through gaps the monkey fits through. She was 6 pixels too tall for them, such as the hidden passage to a warp squid in the ice tower.
All of it is on by default and each part can be turned off; off plays exactly like the original. The elephant and spider are unchanged. Settings, saves and save states from earlier versions carry over as usual.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds) with two new tests, from a save in the desert and one on the ice tower ledge. Every dance in the game's own list (the five transformations, healing and the five warps) starts on its last step. Skipped buttons, Down starting over and two buttons pressed together all work, and each button plays its own dance move. A slider that runs into the new monkey hits her 6 frames after the original's protection ends, and doesn't hurt her with the blink. The monkey and tinkerbat attack, run and jump at full speed with B, the harpy keeps her speed through her talons, and the tinkerbat gets into the hidden passage and through to the warp squid's alcove. With everything set to the original, the dance, the monkey, the tinkerbat and Shantae herself play frame for frame the same as v0.1.10, and Shantae's own Smoother movement test passes as before. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL. Not checked: playing on Linux and real ARM hardware (they run the same code), arriving after a warp (the warp dances start with the right destination, but the trip itself wasn't played), and other gaps the tinkerbat may now fit through besides the ice tower's.

Shantae Recomp v0.1.10
Return to Launcher and Quit in the in-game menus now leave the game the first time you confirm them.
Fixed
- Return to Launcher didn't leave the game the first time, and the game kept running behind the menu. Confirming Return to Launcher or Quit, in the Esc menu or the settings window, left the menu on screen while the game carried on behind it, faster than normal speed. Only a second confirm worked. The request to leave was going round in a loop between the menu and the game's main loop and never reached the part that ends the game, and each time round let the game run another frame. Now the first confirm leaves at once. In the Esc menu these rows still take two presses, as they say: the first asks you to press again.
- Quit opened the launcher. After a Return to Launcher that hadn't gone through, Quit closed the game and then opened the launcher anyway, because the earlier request was still waiting to be carried out. Now Quit only quits.
Settings, saves and save states from earlier versions carry over as usual.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds) with a new test that leaves the game five ways: Return to Launcher and Quit from the Esc menu, the same from the settings window, and the debug tools asking for the launcher and then quitting. Each one ends the game at the first confirm. Return to Launcher opens the launcher; Quit opens nothing, including when it comes after a request for the launcher. On v0.1.9 the same test fails all five: in five seconds the game ran about 5,000 frames behind the open menu, and Quit after Return to Launcher opened the launcher. The launcher's ROM check from v0.1.9 still passes, and so do the startup and differential checks on every build that runs here and on Linux in WSL. Not checked: leaving on Linux and on real ARM hardware (they run the same code), and the gameplay checks from earlier releases, since nothing in the game changed.

Shantae Recomp v0.1.9
The launcher should now recognize the right Shantae ROM and refuse every other. If you reported this in issue #3, please try it and say there what the launcher shows.
Fixed
- The launcher said "ROM not recognized" for the correct ROM, and PLAY started any file anyway (issue #3). The launcher was never told which ROM this build needs, so it couldn't vouch for any ROM, the right one included, and let every file through. Now it knows the ROM's fingerprint (its SHA-256). The correct Shantae (USA) dump should read ROM verified. Anything else should read ROM not recognized, with PLAY greyed out: a bad dump, another game, or another release of Shantae. A wrong ROM never actually ran before either: the game checks the file again when it starts and stops with a "Wrong ROM" message. That check stays, for when "Skip launcher on boot" is on. The issue stays open until the people who reported it confirm the fix on their own machines.
Settings, saves and save states from earlier versions carry over as usual.
Checked on Windows (x64 and x86 builds) with a new test that opens the launcher on a ROM and clicks PLAY. Shantae (USA) reads ROM verified and starts. A copy with one bit changed, a half-size copy and Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble read ROM not recognized, and PLAY does nothing. With the launcher skipped, the game starts for Shantae and stops the other three with its Wrong ROM message. On v0.1.8 the same test shows ROM not recognized for all four, and PLAY passes the wrong ones on to that message. The startup and differential checks pass on every build that runs here, and on Linux in WSL. Not checked: the launcher itself on Linux and on real ARM hardware (they run the same code), and the gameplay checks from earlier releases, since nothing in the game changed.
